I saw this on The Futon Critic's website: In a surprising move by the cable channel, FX has ordered eight additional episodes of "The Shield's" fifth season - extending its run to 21 episodes
www.thefutoncritic.com/cgi/newswire.cgi?id=7008This probably means season 5 is the last one. But 21 episodes is better than 13.

THIS RULES! Woooooooooo! Thanks brandongk1! Here's the rest of what The Futon Critic had to say about the deal..... "It's not clear if the extra installments will run seamlessly from the initial 13 or if the network will split the season into two halves like other cable shows such as "Monk" on USA, "The Sopranos" on HBO or "Battlestar Galactica" on Sci Fi.
No specific reason was given for the extension. The fifth season is currently slated to bow in January.
Fox TV Studios and Sony Pictures Television are behind "The Shield," which comes from creator/executive producer Shawn Ryan."OMG! This is scary and exciting!edit: for some reason FutonCritic.com has moved that article to this url: www.thefutoncritic.com/cgi/newswire.cgi?id=7007

Wow! That sounds REALLY cool! But also it would be another sign that season 5 might be the last season.

WOW!! A full season! I won't know what to do with myself, spoilt with all that shield! It's sad because it most likely means the last season is here But!... 21 episodes of shieldy goodness is almost as good as a 5th and 6th season ;D

yeah, that does seem to be an indication that this will it - interesting mention that the season might be broken into two segments - I could see that happening - one segment to set the stage and the second segment to finish it all off in one long blazing fireball of Shield madness - my hopes for a great season are sky high right now
thanks, Brandon

WOW, I got so used to short seasons, I forgot to hope for longer ones. I hope it has that feeling of a first and second half like season 2. The first half was all about Armadillo and was so intense, you just felt like the story could end at any moment. And it did. By the end of season 2, looking back on the Armadillo story felt like a whole different season.

I think this is excellent news. To be honest, I'm as happy with a 21 episode season 5 as I would be with a season 5 and 6.
A 21-episode season sounds pretty awesome, and its certainly enough episodes to tie up all the loose ends - I was worried that, if s5 was the last season it would resolve things in too much of a hurry.
I just hope that the writers manage to maintain the show's quality over 21 eps, and don't go all '24' on us with a whole load of weak episodes in the middle.

here's an interesting tidbit from the new TV Guide:
"It hasn't been decided if The Shield will advance to a sixth season, but the promo line can also be read as a tease referring to Forest Whitaker joining the show as an internal affairs detective who's setting his sights on Mackey"
Ryan has always said he's got this thing planned out all the way to the end so I figure this is his way of saying that it will take 21 episodes to finish the story and tie up all the loose ends and end the show on a satisfactory note (dramatically speaking - I can't see it ending in Vic's favor, to be honest)

Aren't we all jumping on the bandwagon a bit? It might be true, but I'd like to hear it from the inside. As far as a split season, I said earlier that I like the "Monk Model."
Some loose ends have already been tied up. Here are some that haven't: 1. Connie's kid; 2. Julien's wife and his b/f; Mara and Shane; 4. Vic's marriage and his kids' problems; 5. Danny's promotion; 6. Wym's/Dutch partnership; 7. Antwon; 8. Rawling; 9. Army; 10. Aceveda; 11. Aceveda's whore; 12. Dutch's issues, including possible repercussions of his feline strangulation; and of course, the IAD investigation.
There are probably a lot more (not counting "Mr. Loose End", himself: Ronnie)--anyone want to add to the list?

I thought that all US dramas had a mid season break? No only a few shows that air on cable do. The majority of dramas will usually run the whole way through. Network dramas will run a full season which is usually twenty plus episodes that start in the fall (September, October, and November) and end in the spring (May.) There's usually periods of reruns scattered throughout the season, they can last from just one week to nearly a whole month in some cases. Some shows have started to buck this trend. 24 and Alias both did this last year when they started in January and ran all the way to May for a full season without breaks. Cable dramas will usually have only 12-15 episodes (most of the time it's just 13) and can start and end during any time of the year. Even the cable shows usually run all the way through with some exceptions (like Monk, or Battlestar Galactica.)

you know, I got a dvd set of the old Have Gun Will Travel tv show - they used to do 39 episodes a season back in those days - can you even begin to imagine a 39-episode Shield season
yeah, Chem, I guess when you get down to it there are quite a few major loose ends that could use some resolution - it will interesting to see how they get 'prioritized', ha ha

ah The way the timing of stargate episodes used to run we (in the UK) would overtake while the US was still on hiatus, I just thought all shows did them. It would bug me watching half a season and then having to take a break

See what Glen has to say about this in the "Inside Info" board.

cool, if what Glen says is correct then I'm all for it - 10 and then 11 makes pretty good sense, I think - gives you a chance to stop and collect you thoughts and catch your breath before starting in again - thanks for asking GM that, Chem
I wonder if they are taking into account the sweeps weeks on the major networks and possibly major sporting events like March Madness when they finalize the schedule - I can see FX not wanting to lose viewership

There are probably a lot more (not counting "Mr. Loose End", himself: Ronnie)--anyone want to add to the list? Aceveda's entire rape-then-going-to-a-whore story may not have been completely tied up, but the whore part is. Remember, he freaked out on her and ended up having to leave and stop himself? i see that as tied up as it's going to get. Dutch seemed to have saved his partnerships w/ Wyms when he declined the temporary Captain's role at the end of S4... Vic visited Connie's kid's foster family and indicated he'd be checking up on him occasionally...what a powerful scene that was by the way, Vic's eyes as he looks at Connie's child staring blankly at the TV...but again, I think that's as wrapped up as we're going to get. Not saying I like it, but that's not really the focal point of the show; just another sin Vic may have to pay for in the end, putting Connie in harm's way to begin with after she had cleaned up. While I hate Mara, I'd like to see something happen next season w/ her and Vic, in terms of either reconciling or Shane finally breaking loose of her. Her and her mom have a lot of circumstantial dirt on the Strike Team so that would be interesting to see. Rawling's story is done as Close isn't coming back...that's wrapped up as well, as far as the show is concerned; I doubt we'll even hear the name mentioned in S5. ---- On another note, as an Italian I shunned the Sopranos for a long time but recently gave in to the guilty pleasure of watching that show. I don't know much about it and have only been keeping up with the most recent season from 2004, but it's pretty good...made me miss the Shield though; by far my favorite TV show. When do season 4 dvds come out??? I can't wait for Season 5, less than 3 months away..in fact, probably about 75 days away...good stuff.

I agree with you on some of the little loose ends for S4 -- I don't think we're going to see all of them completely tied up. The way Shane was talking while they were watching Gusano (the strike team was in the car), it seems he is done with Mara. I would like to see her have a huge fight with Shane, though. Maybe even bring her psycho mom in for the blow out!
I'm still hoping against hope that S5 is not the last; denial is a comfortable place these days.

I agree with y'all. 21 episodes probably means the end. But man what a way to go. I'll gladly pay 90 bucks for a 21 episode dvd set.
