I still half to go with season 2. The money train in my opinion is still the best story line there has been thus far, And Dominos Falling is still the best episode to date. The money train story line has been the best, but I think the Armadillo story line was one of the most intense and nailbitting stories they've done. I can just rember when season 2 first aired and I was at the edge of my seat the entire time untill Armadillo was killed.
I also actually liked the Co-Pilot episode, it was a nice break in between the Armadillo story and the money train. Breakpoint is also one of my favortie episodes when they are trying to catch the gang leader.
All in all Season 2 was just the shit, I guess we'll see in January if season 6 will be better or season 2 will be the best of all time.
EDIT EDIT EDIT- After some careful thinking I need to revise my rankings. Season 3 and Season 5 are being switched. Dont get me wrong S5 was good, but 3 was better now that I think about it. I think Dutch and Claudettes case were better in season 3(The cuddler) The Clevon case from S5 wasnt as good. I just all around liked S3 episodes better. Slipknot, Riceburners were two great episodes,as well as the whole Armenian story.Hell S3 had 15 episodes how can you not like that. S5 had Trophy, Mice and Lem, And Postpardom, but other than that the rest were average. I think the real problem with S4 and S5 was that the three big guest starts just overshadowed the rest of the cast. Forest and Anthony exspecially. 1-S2 2-S1 3-S3 4-S5 5-S4

This would have been my favorite season IF Lem hadn't been murdered. He was so tortured all season and killing him was just too cruel. I will go back to the beginning on this one....when Vic was hard core bad and we laughed a lot.
BTW, I have a poster that has Terry standing with Vic, Lem and Shane. Gees, Chiklis sure looks different! Younger, tougher. The years have been hard on him!

The day before the finale of S5, I began watching my DVDs again, starting with Season 1. I am almost done with S3, maybe wrap it up tonight, so with much Shield on the brain, here is what I go I with; Season 1, this set the tone and introduced us to a cop show, and a cop like no other. S1 made NYPD Blue look like Barney Miller. Season 2, Armidillo and the money train. Co-pilot, taking us back to where it all began. The action and the pace of this season was as close to S1 as you could get, no sophmore slump. Mackey made Sipowicz look more like Wojohowicz. (sp) Season 3, with the Money train and Margos, it picked up where two left off, three extra episodes did not hurt either. Benito Martinez should have been nominated for an emmy for Acevada, his role was top notch. The ST being in dissaray at the end left us hanging all summer. Season 5, this one had all the makings of an experienced show, great writing, good action and extreme intensity with Whittaker as Lt. Kavanaugh. He should get an emmy nod for his role. What else about S5 that makes it better than S4; with Lem's demise, no season has left us hanging at the end as much as this one. Cancel Thief, bring on Rescue Me and get The Shield back sooner! Season 4, way different than all other Shield seasons. Glenn Close as the new captain never really panned out for me, she had her moments, the Strike Team was apart, did not enjoy that, but Antwon Mitchell kept things interesting. We also all learned once and for all that Shane is helpless without Vic. I think this season ranks lower than the others not because of Close, but they were overwriting the storylines, pressing it perhaps. Great rebound with S5 though. Guess you can say i am hooked!

I went with S2, then 1,3,5,4
One was a close 2nd, but Armadillo and the money train were the best. One of the few seasons that the ST worked with the least amount of interference from Assinvader or IAD. Just good ole ass kickin, the team stuck together, remember when lem and shane got the banger to kill armadillo in the cage. Awesome!
I was watching some old reruns, Vic looks really young in pilot, and the ST was full of laughter and didn't seem to have a care in the world. I liked Lem rocking out before raiding 2 times house. Great memory!

Can't choose. Season 2 has always been my favorite but I'm growing more of an appreciation for Season 3. It's such a well-realized parable of how money ruins people. Those last two episodes of S3 were brilliant.

I agree.
If I ever watch S3 DVDs, I'm likely to be picking a scene from one or both of those two eps.
In the poll, I picked Season 2. It had a good central villain with Armadillo for 8/13 eps, and some great moments like the ST looking over the money train haul.
In reality though, I'm still undecided. The DVDs brought me greater appreciation of seasons 3 and 4, but 1, 2, and 5 (part 1) are still the only competitors for this title.

S2 - Agree with a lot of the previous posters - Armadillo/Money Train are hard to top; plus the Tio/Claudetter investigation created some good skirmishes
I'll mix it up and pick S-3 for second place - the overall tension/competition of the eps culminating with Marcos' killing and the ST split
S1 - third by a nose (or the extra eps - haha)
S5 and then S4 round out my rankings.

Mine was Season 3 - then 2, 5, 1 and 4
Season 3's continuation of the money train story was super intense - throughout the entire season. Season 2's Armadillo arcs were good too and Season 5 has one of the best and dramatic finales and moments.
1 and 4 were good too, it's just that the other seasons were damn good and intense.
