This is easily the most interesting portion of the interview:
UGO: Did you write in that Danny was pregnant because the actress, Catherine Dent, was pregnant?
SHAWN: Yes, Catherine was pregnant. One of the great things about our show is taking accidents, either happy or bad, and using them to our advantage. Back when we were filming season five, the Forest Whitaker season, in the third or fourth episode, Ronnie comes in because he's done some research on Kavanaugh and talks about how Kavanaugh is divorced. I realize that through all the other episodes Kavanaugh has been wearing a wedding ring. So I came to the writer's room depressed and said, "We've made this mistake, it's going to cost tens of thousands of dollars to erase them." Then I said, "Well, why would a divorced guy still be wearing a wedding ring?" From that question, we came up with the whole Kavanaugh-centric episode where we met his ex-wife who he was still in love with and she was a bit wacko. We ended up doing the whole episode around that because we made a mistake in production. I would say that Catherine's pregnancy was another example of that. It wasn't a story that we were preparing to tell but when she came in and talked about being pregnant and where that would fall in our filming schedule we decided to make a virtue of it. We had this scene where she and Vic hook up late in season four, which was very off the cuff and impromptu, so we decided to make it a story point.
AWESOME how they twisted a complete mistake into a story arc that was completely and wholly convincing.

Just goes to show how talented the writers really are.
I did catch te Kavanaugh/ring mistake. When Jack (my boyfriend) got divorced, he wore his ring after his divorce was final until he was ready to take it off.

That is just goddamned brilliant. Him deciding against sparing his ex-wife the charges and locking up Lem for listening was the very moment that made him a bad guy to me, and it sprung from a wardrobe mistake? Awesome.

Didn't you think pretty lowly of Vic when he banged Zoe from Seren---I mean Kavanaugh's wife? Still, worked out pretty good in the short run, didn't it??

We all have to except the fact that it's come to the point that nothing Vic does would ever be considered lowly by a majority of the fandom. Seriously Vic could stomp on a newborn puppy that belonged to a nun and we'd all find a way to justify it. That sex scene was pretty hot though.

Watch FIREFLY and SERENITY, too, please.

I'm partway a Vic enabler, but that was indeed low. But I do also dislike that Kavanaugh arrested a guy who saved his life earlier in the day. And just up and left his wife when she got sick. Though I didn't mention that at first (sorry).

The look that Vic gives right before he goes for the "sweet butter" says so much without any words in my opinion. It was terrible for Vic to bang Kavanaugh's disturbed ex-wife though. I'm with brandongk1, Vic could do almost anything and the majority of the fanbase will instantly forgive him. From the pilot, Vic did something unforgiveable, yet when we get to know Vic and he's humanized, all fans of TS probably side with him the majority of the time.

Shawn Ryan addresses this during the Panel Discussion on the S5 DVD. He said that he learned this from making The Shield: [paraphrased from my memory] "If you tell a story from a certain character's perspective and make him human enough, it doesn't matter what evil he does.... the audience will relate to him and cheer him on." [/paraphrasing]

A puppy that belonged to a nun? ;D A little far fetched, but it'd still disgust me as did Dutch's cat thing. I refuse to watch that scene. It was not needed and showed animal abuse. Yeah, it was a stuffed cat and SR made sure the audience knew it was a stuffed cat by how bad the stuffed cat looked when Dutch was strangling it, but still....
