Scott Brazil, Emmy-winning director, 50
Scott Brazil, an Emmy-winning TV director and producer whose credits ranged from "Hill Street Blues" to "The Shield," died early Tuesday morning. He was 50. Brazil died at Sherman Oaks Hospital from respiratory failure stemming from complications due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Lyme disease. But the prolific and hardworking director managed as an executive producer and showrunner on FX's "Shield" even as his condition worsened with the help of a motorized cart. Brazil collected a pair of Emmys for Outstanding Drama Series in the early 1980s as part of the team of producers responsible for NBC's "Blues." He directed episodes of many primetime series including "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "JAG," "CSI: Miami" and "Nip/Tuck." (Andrew Wallenstein) FULL STORY

Wow, that's a shock. The mood around FOX, FX, The Shield ... heck, lots of places, must be very sad. I didn't even know he had those health problems.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's) is the more progressive cousin of MS; Multiple Sclerosis, which is what my mom has....
My heart goes out to the Brazil family.... I hope they are able to find comfort in knowing he's in a better place, and free from his ailments. His work on The Shield was some of his best, imho.... he will be missed.

Here's the full article..... ============================================ April 19, 2006 Scott Brazil dies; 'Shield' EP, director By Andrew Wallenstein HollywoodReporterScott Brazil, an Emmy-winning TV director and producer whose credits ranged from "Hill Street Blues" to "The Shield," died early Tuesday. He was 50. Brazil died at Sherman Oaks Hospital from respiratory failure stemming from complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Lyme disease. But even as his condition worsened, the prolific and hard-working director managed his duties with the help of a motorized wheelchair as an executive producer and showrunner on FX's "Shield." "He came into the office as late as (last) Thursday and was talking to the writers, doing casting and prepping our next episode," said Shawn Ryan, creator and executive producer of "Shield." "We knew his body was letting him down, but his mind never deteriorated." Brazil collected a pair of Emmys for outstanding drama series in the early 1980s as part of the team of producers responsible for NBC's "Blues." He directed episodes of many primetime series including "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "JAG," "CSI: Miami" and "Nip/Tuck." Brazil also had been executive producer and showrunner on all five seasons of "Shield," as well as its primary director. He helmed 11 of the 65 episodes produced of the series, including several season openers and finales. Shooting on the set of "Shield" continued on schedule Tuesday in tribute to Brazil. "Everyone, I think, felt more comfortable staying together and working rather than sitting at home trying to deal with this," said Ryan, who expects to suspend production Friday for a memorial service. Brazil also had been active on the development front recently, teaming with James DeMonaco ("The Negotiator") on a series being developed at Spike TV. Brazil was a graduate of USC, where he earned a bachelor of science degree from the Annenberg School of Journalism. He was a member of the Directors Guild of America and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Brazil is survived by his wife, Marie; daughter Lindsay; son Mark; his parents, David and Barbara Brazil; and his brother, Griff Brazil. A memorial service is set for 11 a.m. Friday at ATAS' Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre in North Hollywood.

Wasn't he the guy who was quoted recently as being tired and not feeling up to dealing with a sixth season? If so, I understand with the health issues that he was suffering from. My condolences go out to the family...

It feels as though someone just kicked me in the heart to read that. While I know I can't claim that I even came close to knowing the man personally, but in another sense, thanks to The Shield's DVD extras, I got to know his work, how he worked, how passionate he was, how brilliant he was without being demanding, and I respected the man that I saw profoundly. I think that The Shield, because of the stand-out way that it is shot and produced technically, pulls you in as much in 'how it is made' behind the scenes as it does by the fictional story, the complete finished product. I feel as much a fan of the entire crew from the writers on down as I do the actors for the first time ever when it comes to a television show, and Brazil, as a director---I was just always looking for his name, for his insights, for his mark which was everywhere. I didn't realize that he was sick at all---he seemed to have a boundless energy that was unstoppable when last we got to see him, so to read this was such a sad, unexpected shock. I can only imagine how The Shield community must be feeling, and even moreso, my heart goes out to his family. I am so sorry for the loss of the man and his very special brand of genius.

Scott Brazil, despite his illness, seems to have had the work ethic of great people who refused to allow disease to control their life. Jerry Orbach and Peter Jennings comes to mind. Although the illnesses were not of the same nature, the men were driven to do the work that they had chosen and loved right to the end. There is something admirable about the character of somebody who puts that much love into his life's work. We should be inspired by people like this, who against all odds, find the will to make a lasting impression on our lives.

Jesus, I hadn't heard anything about this. My blood just ran cold.
Godspeed, Scott. Godspeed.
damn.
I didn't know Scott was sick either until right after Season 5 ended and the only Shield stuff I could bring myself to watch was the Season 4 Documentary. There's a lot of great footage of him working with Abby Brammel and Benito Martinez. At the time, he was walking with a cane.
