I was driving home early today and by pure luck caught an interview with Shawn Ryan on NPR on my van's radio! It was Terry Gross' segment called "Fresh Air" in which she interviews people from the arts. Did anyone else hear this? It was current, taped to air today and just ended about 20 min. ago.
A definite highlight was Ryan's response to Terry's Q about whether the last 10 eps will be the end of the show. He said he didn't know. It depended on whether they think they can keep the quality at a high enough level. Of specific interest was his comment that sometime while they write the 2nd 10 eps of S05, he will decide whether to end it or not. And that he definitely can't see the show going for more than one season (i.e., after the 2nd 10 eps of "S05"). He was also asked how Vic was ultimately gonna go out. Ryan said he has some notions, but they were just that ... notions, at this point.
Other interesting parts were how Ryan found it fascinating that the fans are "Vic's enablers" -- that they find a way to justify (or rationalize?) rooting for Vic no matter what he does.
He also talked about his wife Cathy's pregnancy, the story arc about Vic's autistic kids, etc.
I don't know what the NPR affiliate does where you live, but here they replay segments like Fresh Air at night. I will definitely try to catch the re-airing of this interview and see if I can tape it.

Interesting how we as fans are cast in a light as Vic's enablers. But, it is true. Let's face it. We do rationalize and minimalize a lot of the wrong things that Vic does so that we can continue to root him and The Strike Team on every week. I find myself right there in the mix. I wear the "He Puts the Vic in Victim" shirt with pride. Yeah...I am a damn rabid fan. What can I say, a Vic enabler, I am.

I would be willing to bet most of the members of this board are enablers. My question is are we enablers or just evil people with no conscience ourselves, so we can root for vic.
I constantly find myself rooting for the bad guys in movies. I hate it when the "good" guy always wins. I think that is why I like the shield so much.

I'm pretty sure the "Vic Enabler Syndrome" (VES) is an exploitation of the fact that good and evil change with perception. Vic has killed a cop, helped in the drug trade, planted evidence, used law-bender tactics with suspects, and covered up two murders. This is just the stuff we've seen. What we've also seen, however, is the reason Vic does all of this stuff: cleaning up the streets while protecting family and friends. Evil is just causing pain. Even if Vic causes a little pain here and there, the people he puts away are much worse (with the exception of Terry). That's also why we can see Kavanaugh as a villain, or something close. He's made so many bitch moves as of late, and that's all we see of him.

Here is the link to NPR if anyone wants to listen to the interview: www.npr.org/templates/rundowns/rundown.php?prgId=13&prgDate=14-Mar-06This first half is mainly David Mamet talking about The Unit. It is pretty interesting, too. Then it turns to Shawn Ryan and TS. OK, I'm listening to the interview as I type this. The part dealing with TS is actually most of the interview, not just the 2nd half. Really interesting stuff, including excerpts of interrogation scenes from Pilot and Kav's interrogation of Corinne. It's really cool that NPR makes this and their other past shows available.
