Published: March 6, 2006 Entertainment RockfordRegisterStar.com Former Rockford resident producer of new TV show The unit behind CBS’ new military drama “The Unit” represents one of the more impressive gatherings in the name of television. Former Rockford resident Shawn Ryan, creator of FX’s Emmy-winning “The Shield,” is an executive producer. Filmmaker and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Mamet (“Glengarry Glen Ross”) is an executive producer and is writing or directing some of the 13 episodes. Retired Command Sgt. Maj. Eric Haney, whose “Inside Delta Force” details his years in counterterrorism and covert operations, serves as adviser to the series that his 2002 book inspired. But, Haney said, all that creative and ex-Army firepower wasn’t what drew CBS chief executive Les Moonves to the drama about Special Forces operatives at work and at home, where their families cope with a life of secrecy. “Had you come in here with only an action series, I would have passed. But when you said the wives, the sweethearts, that depth of humanity, that’s when you had me,” Haney recalled Moonves saying after a successful pitch meeting. Wags have dubbed the series “Desperate Housewives Meet G.I Joe.” The quip draws a measured response from Mamet. “Maybe. It gets pretty desperate on both sides,” he said. I am not quite sure how I feel about the concept of this series, yet. I really liked "Over There". I don't understand why FX canceled that series. It kicked f*cking ass. This sounds like kind of the same concept in a way except it focuses on a different "unit".

I thought is was a good action show, not bad for a pilot ep. I liked it, and could def tell shawn Ryan had hand in it. I will watch again next week, before I decide to watch anymore though.

Sorry, Shawn... I thought it was ordinary at best. I was sorely disappointed, to be honest...so bored I went back a book I had been reading. I hope Shawn gets back to his jewel, THE SHIELD, and makes sure we get another (aka REAL) season.

Well if the UNIT fails, we have a better chance of more shield seasons. If it takes off I feel he will end the shield.

I didn't expect the pilot to be too good with Shawn constricted to networks. There's still time for build-up. I just hope Shawn puts good focus into The Shield. The 5th season's been good so far, but the other half isn't done yet.

The Unit blows. I was really excited about this show because of Shawn Ryan but so far, I don't see how this show can possibly make it.

Agreed. The only way I see it going on is if they bring Kenny J. to the show. Aceveda's whore was good enough to bring on....as another whore.

I'm glad to read y'alls take on this show... I, too, was somewhat- disappointed- for lack of better word... Unless this is one of those *story-setting-up* episodes. It wasn't bad- just not as I was expecting.... anyways, I'll give it a few episodes to see if *sucks me in*

This week's episode was the best of the 4 so far. Shawn Ryan and Eric Haney wrote the script.
The women actually did more than mope around this week, and the Mission was a good one.

This week's was the first I have seen. I thought it was gonna be like Over There for some reason. Of course, it's totally different. I liked it, especially the part with "Mongoose" out in the wilderness. I liked the way the good guy grit his teeth and popped his shoulder back into place, then put his boot on Mongoose's throat after shooting him--that was great. I guess he set up Mongoose earlier by faking it when Mongoose tried to pop his shoulder--smart. I also got a kick out the exchange between the black guy and the reporter. She asks him for confirmation of his source so he writes a phone no. on a card and says "here, call this number and ask for the President." She calls it and gets the White House switchboard. That was cool. Assinvader's ho is still a ho--only she's married now and bangin the brass on the side.
