Playhouse benefit to celebrate Woodward’s artistic leadership
Legendary singer Tony Bennett, violin virtuoso Joshua Bell, and Tony Award-winning actress Glenn Close will be among the talents celebrating Joanne Woodward’s six-season tenure as Westport Country Playhouse artistic director at a benefit in her honor on Saturday at the Playhouse.
Woodward will turn over her mantle as artistic director and become artistic director emeritus at the end of this year. Her successor is Tazewell Thompson, stage and opera director and playwright.
The evening will include a cocktail reception at 6 p.m., artist performances at 7:30 p.m., and dinner at 9 p.m. with Woodward and her husband Paul Newman.

Hosting the benefit, as well as performing, will be Glenn Close. She made her film debut in John Irving’s “The World According to Garp,” for which she received an Academy Award nomination, followed by further Oscar nominations for “The Big Chill” and “The Natural.” In 1987 she played Alex Forrest in “Fatal Attraction,” a role which garnered her a fourth Academy Award nomination, this time for best actress.
Close went on to win a Tony for her performance as Norma Desmond in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Sunset Boulevard.” On television last season she joined the cast of FX’s “The Shield,” and received an Emmy nomination.
Funds raised through the evening will benefit the Playhouse’s artistic and educational programming. Benefit tickets are $2,000, $1,000 and $500. Corporate and individual sponsorships with seating for 10 are $30,000.
The Westport Country Playhouse is a not-for-profit corporation marking its 75th anniversary year. For ticket availability, call (203) 227-5137, ext. 138.
