From the commentary on the Season 1 DVDs, Episode 1:02 "Our Gang:"
Shawn Ryan asks Walton Goggins, “What’s your first memory of hearing about the show?”
Walton Goggins answers, “I read the script. It kinda came down the pike and I read it, and I thought ‘Man, what can I submit that would secure me a position in this incredible story?’ And I had robbed a bank once so I submitted a bank robbery tape (This illicits hearty laughter from Shawn Ryan.), no I’m just kidding.”
“I did, I read the script and the character of Shane really wasn’t developed that much in the script, but what came along with the script was the piece that you wrote between Lemonhead and I and it just floored me.”
Shaw Ryan interjects, “Just to clarify for the people listening, there were two roles, Shane and Lemonhead, who I knew would be bigger parts as the season went on, but didn’t have a lot to do in the Pilot, so I wrote a couple scenes that were just sort of imaginary scenes of what would happen in imaginary future episodes that, to me, gave a feel for who the characters were”
Walton Goggins continues by saying, “Exactly. And it was something out of a...... I mean it wasn’t a television show, it was a film, you know? For me, it was a film every week; every 7 days. And on the audition process, Debra is a friend of mine [Debra Aquila, Casting Director], and I came in and talked to her for a little bit and then came back for you guys. And it’s like that thing when you feel like this is something that you really really want and all of a sudden your level of energy just goes to something that you didn’t expect.”
“It was an amazing experience and the phone call came, and there ya go.”
