============================= From sonypictures.com: Jay Karnes plays the master detective ‘Holland ‘Dutch’ Wagenbach,’ partner of Detective Claudette Wyms. This season, Dutch is caught between his own ambitions and his loyalty to Claudette, whose apparent self-destructive behavior is holding Dutch back. Karnes, a native of Omaha, Nebraska, attended Kansas University at Lawrence where he majored in Theatre and Political Science. After college, Karnes began a career in the regional theatre, which included work at Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, Missouri Repertory Theatre, South Coast Repertory, California Shakespeare Festival and Oregon Shakespeare Festival, among others. Producer Joe Stern (“Law & Order,” “Judging Amy”) saw Karnes play ‘Mercutio’ in the Shakespeare/Los Angeles production of “Romeo and Juliet” and asked him to join the new The Matrix Theatre Company. In their inaugural production “The Tavern,” Karnes met his wife, actress Julia Campbell. After settling in Los Angeles, Karnes began working steadily in film and television. His film work includes “The Joyriders” and “The Next Best Thing.” He has guest starred on numerous television shows including “Ally McBeal,” “Judging Amy,” “Nash Bridges,” “Chicago Hope,” “The Pretender,” “Star Trek Voyager” and “Frasier.” Karnes has continued his work with The Matrix Theatre Company in productions of “The Seagull” and “Dangerous Corner,” as well as starring as ‘Stanley Webber’ in the company’s production of Harold Pinter’s enigmatic “The Birthday Party.” Click here for the link.============================= Here is a picture from a performance of "The Birthday Party:" Lawrence Pressman, Morlan Higgins & Jay Karnes Photographer - Michael Lamont ============================= Jay played ASA Ron Russell in an episode of Judging Amy called "Dream a Little Dream" (episode # 6.13) 15 February 2005. Ah, good ol' Dutch Boy. Wow, I went to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in another life (I think it was in Ashland, OR, but I'll be amazed if I got that right. OK, I HAD to check and I got it! ... woo! That was 30 yrs ago--now if only I could remember what I did 30 days ago).
Interesting stuff, E. I wonder how he got the role of Dutch? Was there anything on that?

Chem, I believe on the Season 1 DVD Commentary, Shawn Ryan states that he knew Jay Karnes previously, and had Jay in mind when he wrote the part of Dutch.
If I'm wrong, I humbly apologize.

=======================================
Update:
I was only partially wrong, so my apology won't be all that humble.... "Sorry, so sue me!!"
During the commentary on the Season 1 DVD (episode 1:06, Cherrypoppers), Shawn Ryan and Jay Karnes discuss how they met at the Shenandoah Playwrights retreat in VA, in the summer of 1989. SR was there because of a writing award he had received, and JK was there for an acting award. SR’s play was chosen for one of the workshops, and Jay played the lead. When SR first moved to LA, Jay was the only person he knew, and they became roommates.
Shawn Ryan wanted Jay to be a part of The Shield, but Jay felt there wasn’t really a part for him in the origianl script, so SR actually re-wrote the part of Dutch, inserting some “Jay-isms,” as he calls them. SR was able to get Jay his initial audition for the network guys, and Jay won the part of Detective Holland "Dutch" Wagenbach. Jay was almost passed up for the role because he was already in a pilot for FX called, “Bad News Mr. Swanson.” That show was scuttled by the network, freeing Jay up for his part on The Shield.

Jay Karnes was in last nights episode of the CBS show Numb3rs - he played a jewelry store owner who sets up the kidnapping of his wife and child to pay off a gambling debt - he sported a a half-gray dye-job for his hair cut and some weird eye makeup that made him look a little older - had about 10 minutes screen time - CCH Pounder was a guest star last year - Diane Farr from Rescue Me is now a regular cast member and is a pretty good addition - she had some good lines and her character is developing nicely
