Well Gang - Emmy awards nominations were announced today, and it looks like, despite the fact that our dear show got passed over in the Best Drama Series category, that the ladies of The Shield have definitely gotten some recognition! The only two nominations received were: *Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series:Glenn Close, The Shield*Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series: CCH Pounder, The ShieldIn the Best Drama Series category, the nominees were: Deadwood, 24, West Wing, Six Feet Under, and Lost. I heard a blurb about the nominations on NPR while I was driving between offices. A guy (critic for some New York pub, can't remember which one), mentioned his surprise that none of FX's excellent dramas were nominated. It irked me that he mentioned Nip/Tuck and Rescue me, but not The Shield. Maybe it was just an oversight. Deadwood was nominated, I believe. Deadwood? I watched it once. I'm far from being a prude, but was "f*ck!" really every other word in dialogues of the old west? I kind of doubt it and it seemed so gratutious that I wasn't interested after that. I'm not surprised at all that Close got a nod--with her pedigree she probably has a good chance. The problem with Emmy and other similar awards, IMHO, is that they sometimes focus too much on pedigree and tend to overlook less established, but equally deserving (if not more so) actors. I think this has happened in the case of Meryl Streep. With Close's portrayal of Capt. Rawling I think she definitely deserves it on her own right. But, if I'm right, it doesn't bode well for CCH. I'll also have to admit that I haven't been all that impressed with CCH's performances this year. She seems too locked in to certain mannerisms. On the other hand, the question of how much an actor was given to work with by the writers is always a valid one.

I think the opposite might happen... the voters might totally boycott Close *because* of her pedigree. Like, ok, big screen (but aging) actress slums it so she looks like she's still "it." Cruel, but I bet some think that way! I have my fingers and toes crossed for CCH. And it does seem too weird that she gets nominated this year--when it was hardly a Wyms season. Call me a cynic, but I really think it was more like, "Let's be sure to nominate a black woman this year." I think every one of the TS regulars has deserved a nomination!

The person who I feel was really overlooked this season was Walton Goggins. I think in the grand "Hollywood" scheme of things he's just not "big" enough, but DAMN if he didn't really take it to a whole new level this season, imho... I would have liked to see him get some recognition for that.

No kidding! Goggins was breathtaking this year. Of course, esp in the episode in which he confesses to Vic. I bet he was very very disappointed.
Maybe part of the problem is he doesn't seem to play the H-wood game by hanging out at parties, etc. All around, The Shield has been seriously cheated.
Do suppose it is enough that the The Shield people know it and the fans know it?
The ultimate stiff will be to deny Close an Emmy. They might have nominated her just to snub her. I suspect these things, too!
