season 1-3 have terrible packageing but great art, season 4 has decent packageing (standered) but terrible art
season 5 pretty much nailed it with perfect sized package, perfect art.. i can deal with S4 and S5, but 1-3 are just plain bad, hopefully 1-4 get a slim case make-over, i dont have room on my dvd shelf as it is and big clunky sets arent helping, i had to fork over 400 bucks to get Angel complete set, buffy set and angel set to knock off some wall space (and i admit i love the packageing on them)
hopefully the shield will get a super set one day, maybe inside of a "badge" or something, like a box that looks like a strike team deck of cards? i dont know.. i just prefer slim cases and complete collection sets

So, are you guys suggesting that they will be revamping the artwork? Are you guessing at this, or has it been hinted at?

turns out its the same artwork but they are re-releasing them on SLIM dvd sets (like season 5)
which is fine by me, because the packaging on season 1-2 were terrible, i was hoping for new artwork but whatever im fine.

I had never seen the shield till season 5. A friend was so exited about season 5 starting so I watched it. I loved it. I went to amazon.com and purchased season 1-4 on dvd. well they all came from different companies. First i received season 2, then 4, then 3 last season 1. (go figure) this was all in a time frame of about 2 weeks. I wanted to start at season 1 and work my way through. anyways, when I got to season 3, I unwrapped it and had 2 cases for disk 2 and no case for disk 1. I was pissed. I opened one of the cases of disk 2 and (to no surprise) it was disk 2. I opened the other disk 2 case and (shocker) it was disk 1. I called the company and they refunded half the money.

Sony did all the R2 releases, and they were all widescreen. Rumor is the Season 6 & 7 DVD sets will be widescreen. If the re-released sets of 1-5 are widescreen, I'll re-buy all of them....

im rebuying them soley on the fact that they are slim sets, i cant stand bulky sets
but if it has widescreen.. holy shit! but i thought they shot the series in 4:3 not 16:9

But i thought they shot the series in 4:3 not 16:9 It is filmed in a 4:3 aspect ratio, but who knows they might re-master them into the 16:9 wide screen format.

But i thought they shot the series in 4:3 not 16:9 It is filmed in a 4:3 aspect ratio, but who knows they might re-master them into the 16:9 wide screen format. I don't think this is correct. I'm pretty sure I've read that The Shield is filmed in widescreen. The Season 4 episode, Back In The Hole, is widescreen on the Season 4 DVD set. It's pretty obvious, if you compare the DVD version to the version aired on FX, that the episode was filmed in widescreen & not just re-mastered that way.

im referring to the first few seasons Shawn Ryan talks about this on a commentary track for Season 3. This review goes into detail about the issue: www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=56359Here's the main gist of it: "As with previous Region 1 DVD releases, Season 3 is presented in the 1.33:1 Full Frame aspect ratio, exactly how it is broadcast on American cable network FX. Ever since the R1 Season 1 DVD release which included deleted scenes in widescreen, and the subsequent UK Region 2 DVD releases of Seasons 1 & 2 which were presented in 1.78:1 Widescreen fans have been questioning which presentation is the more accurate. Well, in his final commentary on the set creator Shawn Ryan answers these queries and clears up a few issues. Firstly, although filmed in Widescreen, The Shield is edited in Full Frame, and to maintain the documentary feel and enhance the tension on screen was always envisioned to be seen in the Full Frame aspect ratio the final editing is performed in."

I was just perusing Amazon.com & looking at the details for the new Shield re-issues. One section of the Product Details stood out:
"Format: Closed-captioned, Color, Dolby, Dubbed, DVD-Video, Subtitled, Widescreen, NTSC"
This may be true, since Sony released all theirs sets in widescreen the first time. I'll be re-buying all the seasons if this ends up being true. I would be willing to sell my original Season 1-5 at a good discount to anyone interested (once this is confirmed, of course....)
