What's with the Dutch and cats thing? I must of missed that somewhere along the way. I didn't see that much of Season 4, maybe there?

It stems from the interrogation with the serial killer and the killer was describing the feeling he got when he saw the look in a victim's eyes just before they died. He told of the first time it happened with him as a kid when he killed a cat. Dutch had an issue with a stray cat keeping him awake at his house. He went outside one night and picked it up, began to pet it, then strangled it to death.

You don't remember what Season it was? As in 'him' you mean Dutch told the guy he was interrogating? If not how did they reveal that Dutch did that?

It was Season 3, the episode was called "Strays". The sequence is as follows: Dutch was interrogating the "cuddler rapist", trying to get inside his head, find out why he killed. The rapist/murderer recalled how he first became acquainted with the thrill of taking another life by strangling cats when he was young. Dutch happened to have been bothered recently by a stray tom cat who kept him awake at night with his yowling. After his interview with the rapist/murderer, Dutch came across the cat at his back door late at night, picked it up, considered it for a few seconds, then strangled it, dropped its body on the step, and went inside. It still makes my stomach turn to describe it even in writing. Since then cats --even the mention of them-- have caused some very strange expressions to appear on Dutch's face. Even when they're not sitting on top of murder victims and licking their blood.

Thanks, I'm in the middle of watching Season 3 on ABC on the weekends, so I'll catch it. That's wierd, I never heard that about his character until recently, must be to show us that flaw in his character so we don't think Dutch is stictly a "good cop."

I love season 3. It is my favourite by a long way.
I like that it showed us just how intent Dutch is to get inside the minds of a killer. He needs to experience it, from his POV, because then his interrogations will have more success.

That sequence showed that he had falledn right into the rapist/murderer's way of thinking and that he actually got off on taking the life of that cat. It seems to me now that he realizes what happened it scares him to confront it. Certainly lays a good foundation for Dutch to end (show-wise) on a very big note.

I totally agree, ShootFirst --but for some reason I really expected it to happen in S4. Now it's bugging me that I can't think of why. But I remember having day-after-episode conversations with one of my 2 Shield-fan co-workers after eps in S4 where we both were like, "Oh, that's it. Dutch has lost it. Dead hookers, or dead gangbangers or registered sex offenders or some despised group, are going to start turning up in gruesome situations and turns out Dutch will have done it. Just you watch." Damn, why did we think that?? It still could happen, I guess. Especially if Dutch gets rejected by Tina and insulted by Billings and shown up even by unassuming guys like Ronnie. Then he might get frustrated enough to try to grab some sort of feeling of power any way he could.
Come to think of it, my co-worker and I were expecting a body count from Aceveda in S4, as well. That was not a happy season.
