I’m really looking forward to how you guys finish up “The Shield.” [There are two more seasons of ‘The Shield,’ one that will begin probably in March 2007, the other will likely air in late 2007 or early 2008.]
“There are a lot of great shows that kind of stumble across the finish line near the end of their runs I’m going to try very hard to make sure that doesn’t happen with our show. I talk about this with the writers and actors a lot, we have a very rare opportunity to be a show that came on strong, stayed strong and finished strong.
“It won’t be easy, it’s never easy. And the pitfalls are constantly around you. The pitfalls are repeating yourself … one of the big pitfalls is that you get good enough at your job that you know there’s an easy way out to something that will allow you to get home and have dinner with your kids. But deep in your heart you know it’s not the best artistic solution.
“But as you work harder and harder as a successful show [continues], you make more money, you’re not as hungry money wise, there’s a temptation, ‘Hey, I don’t have to work this hard. I should be able to enjoy life a little bit.’ And I feel that occasionally. And then I realize, I’m about to compromise on something that I know isn’t working as well as it could work. And I do have to stay and I do have to miss this dinner and we do have to do some work at home tonight after the kids go to bed when I’d rather be doing something else.
“With the actors, they have a certain thing that they know works for that character, so what makes them, the night before, go over their lines really closely, really look for some different way to play it that we haven’t seen. That’s one of the things that I admire in Michael Chiklis, he does things in every single episode that I look at and go, ‘Wow, I haven’t really seen him do that before.’ He has this moment in one of the episode that hasn’t aired yet, [showing Vic Mackey] with this side that’s sort of a blood thirst -- in a follow up story to Lem’s death, you see him sort of relishing this moment of cruelty, where you just go, ‘Whoa.’ I would love to take credit for that in the script, but that really was Michael.
