i really hope i don't piss anybody off, but, seriously, can anybody explain to me ronnie's purpose in the show? other than as a 'fourth guy'? i'll admit, i've only seen maybe 80% of the episodes from seasons 1-5, but from what i've seen, the character seems damn near useless...am i missing something?

He is their geek. His skills help them all the time.
I also think that by the end of the series he will be the only one of the 4 that is still alive and not in jail.

If Shane hadn't offed Lem, I think it'd be both Lem and Ronnie left out. Ronnie was clueless more often than not and Lem had his reservations. The only really terrible thing that he did, other than the Money Train was taking the heroin that Emolia witnessed.

Okay, of course I must reply to this! Yes, Ronnie has been the forgotten son for awhile, but that doesn't mean he's not important. He's been very loyal to the team. He was the guy who did the busy work behind the scenes, set up anything to do with technology (including those illegal wire taps they were fond of). He cracked the computer in the women's shelter murder case. He watched over Connie when Vic needed his help (though, he did "lose" her when he went to make her tea). Plus he came up with the whole Money Train robbery plan that prevented them from getting killed during the heist. He's the tech geek, when the others are more street savvy. Luckily, he has had more ass-kicking scenes, though still with very little character development. And his loyalty to Vic got him more screen time in season 4. ;D If anything Shane is more useless to the actual characters than Ronnie. Shane gets them in trouble, thus is important for the show to move along the plot but is a huge problem. Clearly, considering the ending of season 5. And that is my spiel!

Every epsiode he does something important towards the case they are working on. And IAR , that avatar of your is really freaking cool.

just wondering...who's avatar is really freaking cool? i was actually more focused on ronnie's existence from a writing/production point of view...he seems to be written as a very secondary character...sure, it's often implied that he does a lot, but what about his screen time? just food for thought and discussion... and, oh yeah, the only scene i've ever disliked with shane was the f***ing grenade... (it was a grenade, right? it's been a while since i saw that episode) i think shane's the man

He was originally just written as a background character. I guess they never had any plans for him, so they have let to think of what to do with him... Hopefully that will change They have given him more of a role, but still not much of a personal life. He doesn't seem to exist outside of the team.

Ronnie has some of the best lines in the show. I love it when he says something really inappropriate and every other member of the Strike Team just stops what they're doing and looks at one another

I friggin' love how he says the oriental rug comment! ;D
Another example is in 4x13:
Lem: Directions to Industrial Discount Clothing. Ronnie: It's off Rampart. (Vic, Shane and Lem look at him) Ronnie: I shop there. Vic: That explains a few things. Shane: C'mon brother, let's get you the arresting officers' discount.

Ronnie plays an important part! He might not seem important but if he was killed off rather then Lem then things would be totally different in the show. He is loyal to the team even if he isn't as dirty as Vic and Shane. Plus he had a 'stashe which chicks dig (according to him) and he has a way with the ladies (taking about his golf handicap to strippers).

Ronnie is definitely a necessary part of the team. As stated, his role to this point has been one of support but in a big way. Some may not pay as much attention to him or take notice of what he brings to the team but those same people would sure as hell notice if he was gone. He stays.

When Kavanaugh was interrogating him about his part of the cash that they took from pimps/hookers/drug dealers/ etc, he didn't even bat an eye when he lied to Kavanaugh about it. All he said is"I don't keep track of their finances". Ronnie didn't even act surprised when Kavanaugh brought it up, didn't even phase him. He is definitely a tight lipped cop.
What did he do with his $65,000 anyway?
My favorite line from him is when Lem said he needed to go home, Ronnie asked if he was going to get paid for today. I thought that was pretty funny.

I don't think anyone's share was brought up. We all know Vic gave his to Corrine, but I don't think Shane or Ronnie mentioned what they did with theirs nor was it implied.
I could be wrong though.
