I can't believe this, Darabont is a GENIUS!
'Shield': Magnet For Directors
"The Shield" showrunner Shawn Ryan landed a publicity and artistic coup a few seasons back when famed writer-director David Mamet offered to direct a third-season episode of the FX cop drama. Now, for 2007's penultimate sixth season, Mr. Ryan's show has attracted another big name: Frank Darabont, the writer-director of "The Shawshank Redemption," "The Green Mile" and the upcoming remake of Ray Bradbury's "Fahrenheit 451." Last week Mr. Darabont shot a pivotal episode of the show, of which FX recently ordered a final 13-episode seventh season. But even with heavy-hitting Hollywood screenwriting credentials, figures such as Mr. Darabont and Mr. Mamet are welcome only in the director's chair, FX sources said. The scripts remain the turf of Mr. Ryan and his writing team. -James Hibberd

He directed the episode they filmed the week before we visited. Someone spotted him on the set, but I didn't talk to him or get his picture.... jwc, chem? Do you guys remember seeing him? Was he that bald man that was there early on? Or did I just make this up or dream it?

That's so amazing.
He's kinda bald, so that might have been him.

Should be good. "The Shawshank Redemption" is only one of the best movies ever. "The Green Mile" is damn good too.

I totally met him but had no idea who he was (which is good cuz I absolutely f***ing HATE Shawshank Redemption) - he stood in the 'control' room and talked to everyone for a couple minutes - I thought he was one of the FX bigwigs

Oh, jwc!! We've found something to disagree about! It's about time, eh? haha... I loved Shawshank and could watch it repeatedly (which I have). So, what did he say? Where was I? I totally don't remember him at all.... wait, was he the balding guy? Jeeeeez, I feel like a moron.

Hey, be nice, jwc. Darabont was born in a refugee camp, the son of Hungarian parents who fled after the failed 1956 Hungarian Revolt, and came to the U.S. as an infant. I was born to Hungarian refugees in a camp in Germany and came to the U.S. as an infant. Darabont has a pretty impressive resume: one of only 6 directors to ever have his first two films nominated for best picture Oscars (including Shawshank). imdb.com/name/nm0001104/bioMy resume is a little less impressive, heh. What was it about that film that you hated? Never mind ... wait until I have seen the whole thing (I have only seen bits and pieces), but I have never heard anyone say anything but great things about it. We had a h.s. exchange student from Brazil when it came out and I remember how he raved about it. After I mentioned to Michael Chiklis that I was Hungarian he said that Frank Daramont was also Hungarian. As E mentioned Daramont had just directed the ep before we arrived. MC said how efficient he is as a director--that the filming went very quickly with him. He also said he thought Daramont is a great director.

I'm amazed by his resume thus far.
He's only made 3 films in a span of 11 years but 2 of those films have been Oscar nominated masterpieces and the other...the Majestic.
Darabont always gets amazing performances out of his actors (See: Robbins in Shawshank and Clarke Duncan in Green Mile) but it'll be hard for him to make Chiklis or Walton any more amazing!

Something tells me he'll deliver the goods in his directing of TS episodes. Small but impressive list of credentials.
Count me in for those who thought Shawshank kicked ass.
