well from the day i saw "Coyotes" i always thought that Vic would "end" like Gilroy fro not taking his advice. he tells him like two times "i've been too greedy. there's a lesson here, Vic. i've been too greedy"...or something quite similar...so yeah, as they steal the Money Train almost just after, i thought that Vic could end "like" Gilroy... well... now, at the end of S5 i just don't know what to think about Vic anymore...

Vic and Gilroy are similar in that they both step across that line in order to get a little something extra for themselves. The diffrence is that when Vic would step across that line he may have been doing something that wasn't exactly legal, but at the same time it is doing some good for the community. Like protecting Rondell and then TO, he let them operate but with rules, like no selling to kids. Also if he is looking out for one person he could then bust all of the competition so that wars would not start up between the diffrent gangs. Hitting the money train could be looked at as not bad because the Armenians didn't earn it. Like the beginning of the episode Vic says "Think about when this money is comming from-Drugs,Prostitution,etc and is just going to finance more of it. They didn't earn it I don't feel bad taking it." Vic steps over that line, but does a good to even it out for the most part.
As for Gilroy, from what we see he steps over that line just for himself. He does nothing good to even it out. Like taking cops out of one area to crash the land value, buy it cheap, stick cops back in and clean it up, then sell the property for a gain. Nothing benfits the community from what he does.
Vic is also a loyal person, Gilroy is not. S1 Gilroy goes to Aceveda saying Vic killed the kid who say him do the hit and run. S2 wears the wire for the DA to get his ass off.
Bottom line, they have a couple of similarites, but many more diffrences.
