the fictional Farmington is based on the real Rampart district found in Los Angeles - the district has a long and storied history in LAPD lore (most recently the well-publicized scandal from a few years ago which brought a halt to the use of the CRASH units and resulted in the conviction of a number of LAPD officers and the release of a number of people from prison/jail - some guilt but some totally innocent) - in fact, as I recall, the first name of the show was Rampart - LAPD divides the city of Los Angeles into numerous administrative districts of which Rampart is just one - I actually have a map showing all the districts (PM me and I'll send you a copy) - to its credit, the show actually does the bulk of the location shooting in and around the real Rampart but does occasionally cross into other districts - East LA (the predominantly Hispanic area of LA) is its own district but becomes part of Farminton in the show and they also do venture out into the San Fernando Valley (porn capital of the world) which is, in realty, quite a distance from Rampart - Koreatown and Echo Park (seen in 1x1 and other eps) is in Rampart however as are a number of the 'neighborhood' stores they use - so, while nobody really knows exactly how big the fictional Farmington, it encompasses a pretty big hunk of Los Angeles - they used to make the daily location shoots public but ever since 9/11 they stopped - the Barn itself is a set (check out the photos from Chem & Co's visit inthat thread)

After the first season Glen or Scott told me that most of their location shooting is done within a mile and a half, or so, of their studios (the Disney Prospect Ave. studios--a few miles east of the Sunset Blvd exit of the Hollywood Freeway). I think that changed in later seasons. Yes, i recognized Echo Park in a few of the eps -- I rented a rowboat at the lake there once, many many moons ago.
A lot of the streets look alike in the parts of LA/Hollywood where they film; Rampart, East LA districts, etc.
Some trivia: East LA (like Hollywood, a district of LA not an actual city) has the 3rd largest concentration of Mexicans in the world. At least that was true 25 yrs ago. Who knows, by now it might have moved up to #2?!
