I was thinking about why Season 3 is my favourite season and, apart from the incredibly well-plotted marked money story arc, one of the main reasons is probably the continuity that it has with Season 1.
Things like the reappearance of the younge female carjacker from 1x05, Margos' return and Aceveda's Korean friend casually mentioning Moses Hernandez, who hadn't made an appearance or even been mentioned since 1x02.
The thing that got me the most, however, were the moments in Season 1 that seemed to subtly foreshadow some of the important plot developments that occur in Season 3:
Firstly, there are the rape allegations that are brought against Aceveda by his former college girlfriend. Of course, they turn out to be false, but, along with his confesses to his wife that he was involved in violent sex and BDSM, they seem to foreshadow his own rape in Season 3 and his prostitute-assisted "therapy" in Season 4.
Secondly, in 1x06, when interrogating a suspect that he believes to be a murderer Dutch asks him whether he enjoys killing cats. At the time, this seems like little more than an off-hand remark, but after watching the end of 3x11 it seems like brilliantly subtle foreshadowing.
Finally, there's the argument between Lem and Shane in 1x12 where Shane wants to get money by illegally collecting the bounty on a wanted criminal, while Lem wants to "just do what we're supposed to do" and arrest him legally. While the argument is little more than a minor dispute it foreshadows excellently the ending of 3x12 where Lem wants to burn the Money Train cash and Shane tries to stop him by pointing his gun at him.
My question is: To what degree do you think that these examples are actually intended as foreshadowing? Do you think that, during the writing of S1 Shawn Ryan already knew what was going to happen in S3, or do you think that these instances are just coincidence?
