Hey, CC! I called it the "alleged cover" because I can't imagine that they would not put Glenn Close front and center.... and the Chinese looking symbols under "The Shield" make me think it's not quite acurate.... The picture is an old promo; Aceveda with his badge.... The color is all wrong too -- imho, of course. The fine print on the BoxedTVSeries.com site (where I found the alleged cover) says: *These are foreign manufactured sets, however, all DVD's are in english and will play in any US DVD player. No fancy boxes just savings.I think BoxedTVSeries made it up for their website, or just used an old foreign-released cover from seasons past. In complete agreement with you, I am stoked about the commentary tracks! I am, however, sorry Glenn Close isn't on one; that would have been a real treat. Only 3 1/2 months to go!! lol Miss E

to my knowledge, that particular image is from a Chinese bootleg of S1 - I have that cover on my Chinese S1 set (which is a boot - that's not to say there wasn't an 'offical' release with that exact same cover - or that that cover wasn't used on the official S2 or S3 Chinese releases or won't be used on S4 Chinese boots) - none of the dvd online stores I frequent has a cover image up yet but I think it's safe bet Close will be on the front - my thought is that they are waiting for the results of the Emmy awards - it is a shame there will be no Close commentary though

Can't wait, awesome choices for the commentary. Anyways, too bad it's a little past my enlistment date, so I doubt I'll have much time to really enjoy it when the only spare time I'll have will be during weekend leaves Oh well

The Shield Fourth Season on DVD December 27th MoviesOnline.caProvocative, heart pounding and gripping. Three words that best describe one of the greatest police dramas on television. Keeping the streets safe, has never been seen with such in your face brutality. I'm talking about The Shield. The fourth season to this acclaimed emmy award winning series, will be available to own on DVD this December 27th. If you are a fan of the show, I strongly recommend to pick up a copy. Technical Features- Full Screen 1.33:1
- English Dolby Digital
- English and Spanish subtitles
Bonus Features- Audio commentaries on selected episodes
- 80 minute documentary
- Deleted scenes with optional commentary by Shawn Ryan
- Trailers
- and more....
The Shield breaks the conventional formula of the cop genre. It plays out in a tough, morally ambiguous world in which the line between good and bad is crossed ever day. The series focuses on the tension between a group of corrupt but effective cops and a captain torn between bringing them down and advancing his own political ambitions. The Shield stars Michael Chiklis (The Commish) as rogue cop "Det. Vic Mackey," leader of the elite Strike Team unit, who is effective at eliminating crime but who operates under his own set of rules. Benito Martinez (Outbreak & Her Costly Affair) plays "Captain David Aceveda," the young precinct head who doesn't like Mackey's tactics and wants to bust him off the force. And the Emmy-nominated CCH Pounder (ER & Boycott), plays "Det. Claudette Wyms," a veteran detective who understands Mackey and knows how to play both sides of the fence. The show made history by becoming the first ad-supported cable series to win the 2003 Golden Globe Award for Best Drama Series. In its first season, Shawn Ryan (Writing) and Clark Johnson (Directing) received Emmy nominations, which were also firsts for basic cable in those categories. The Shield has received two TCA nominations for Outstanding Achievement in Drama. As of March 2005, the show has become the longest running series on the FX Network.

Damn. I really want this. Living in Australia, not even Season 3 is out on DVD yet though... thank God for Amazon and all-region DVD players I suppose. Walton Goggins is the only cast member not included in the commentary? That makes me very sad, especially considering his rather pivotal role in the season as a whole. It also makes me curious as to why he's not on there. It would've been really, really great if Close could've been on one too. Ain't that a Shame! (see what I did there? ) I love that there's an 80 minute documentary. I heard the season 3 one was great, and I loved the "Wrap Day" one from season 2. I soooo need the season 3 DVD now...

Studios move hot DVD titles to post-Xmas MondayThu Dec 15, 2005 6:21 AM ET By Thomas K. Arnold ReutersLOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - With DVD sales running just slightly ahead of last year, the fate of the year in the home entertainment business might hinge on the very last week of 2005. That's because a cadre of high-profile new releases will hit stores on Monday -- the day after Christmas -- instead of the traditional Tuesday. Studio executives said they made the move to add an extra release day in the hopes of capturing a greater share of the lucrative gift-card redemption business, now valued at $18 billion a year, as well as to capitalize on consumers returning and exchanging gifts. Disney was the first to make the switch, moving the thriller "Dark Water" and then the two-disc special edition of "Toy Story 2" to December 26 from December 27. Then came Universal, with the direct-to-video sequel "American Pie Presents Band Camp"; Fox, with Season 4 of FX's "The Shield" ; and Lions Gate, with the documentary "Grizzly Man." All told, of the 165 DVD titles originally scheduled for December 27 release, 33 have been moved up a day, said Ralph Tribbey, editor of the DVD Release Report. "Once it starts, no one's going to hold it," Tribbey said. He said he expects virtually every new title due out that week to be for sale on Monday, regardless of whether the studio officially has changed the date. The strategy shows just how keen DVD marketers are on ending the year with a bang. At the onset of the fourth quarter, most industry watchers stuck to previous predictions that the business would grow 5% this year. Unit sales were essentially flat in October, then rose sharply in November, which according to an analysis of Nielsen VideoScan data saw a 13.6% rise for the top 50 DVD sellers. Whether consumer spending is rising accordingly is unknown, however, because of rampant discounting during the holiday season. Reuters/Hollywood Reporter © Reuters 2005. All Rights Reserved.

Hi, jwc! Good to see some familar initials on these here threads.
Are the postal folks taking Monday off? It is kind of a roll of the dice right now...you might get the DVDs right away, as everyone busts a move to get stuff to people by Christmas...or, your poor DVDs might be caught up in post Christmas postal sludge and inch their way toward you over the next week. Hope the former comes true so you can have your own Christmas S4 marathon.
I'm hearing that the coast is getting massive waves, rain AND high temps...how are things holding up with the extra extras?

THE SHIELD: SEASON 4 / / Fox / $59.98 / The Shield is one of television's angriest and most violent dramas. But, like HBO's The Sopranos, it is also one of the medium's most inspired and daring crime series. After three seasons of riding the Emmy-Award-winning performance of Michael Chiklis as rogue detective Vic Mackey, the series added Tony and Emmy Award winner Glenn Close as Mackey's new boss in season four, which is being released Tuesday on DVD. It was just the kind of jolt the program needed.
The season opens with Mackey on the ropes. He and his strike force team have just lost all the money they stole from Armenian gangsters. Then, his elite unit is disbanded with Mackey getting busted back to grunt level detective duty. And now the master of precinct-house insubordination has a new boss, Captain Monica Rawling (Close), who sits him down her first day on the job and says, "You've got one week to get your [expletive] together - or things are going to get worse."
Mackey speaks directly to the audience's fear and anger about urban crime. As was the case with Detective Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz) on the late ABC series NYPD Blue, that kind of sociologically charged character can generate intensely powerful drama. But it can also suggest easy answers about law and order and the use of excessive force.
While Captain Rawling is just as tough as Mackey, the model of policing that she advocates is more even-tempered and enlightened on the matter of civil rights. Season 4 was the series' most uneven in terms of action-based story telling, but overall, The Shield was greatly enriched by the clash between these two compelling characters.
Special features Eight of the season's 13 episodes feature commentaries from cast and crew - that's a lot. Virtually all of the writers, producers and performers offer commentary, and they make up one of the smartest creative teams in the business. Forty deleted scenes are included, as well as an hourlong backstage feature on the making of Season 4

FYI!!
Along with creator Shawn Ryan and director Stephen Kay -- actors Glenn Close, CCH Pounder, and Catherine Dent give commentary during ep 4:13; "Ain't That A Shame." They recorded the commentary a few days before the Emmy Awards. Glenn was able to chime in via sattelite / phone connection from New York. However they managed it, the sound quality is no different than if she had been in the studio with the others.
The deleted scenes kick ass and the behind the scenes documentary, titled "Under The Skin" is SUPER!!
