Let me tell you why another Season - 7, 8 and possibly a 9 - is a guarantee... The group that all advertisers want to hit is the 18-49 year old viewer market. Every network strives to find a show that will attract the most 18-49 year olds consistently, show after show. The facts: Since its inception, The Shield has been drawing between 2.9 & 3.6 million viewers per episode. This year it is right around 3.2 million. The Shield brings in, on the average, 2 million 18-49 year olds every Tuesday night (not exactly a popular night either). What this means: 1) Ecstatic advertisers! 2) Huge dollars for the FX network. My personal opinion: Based on the data, The Shield is going no where anytime soon. If it lost its target audience by 50%, then maybe we would need to worry about it. Could that happen? Sure. If they did something stupid like fire Chiklis or write some terrible season that did nothing but try to bring "shock" value with no really story line. Basically - relax all... many more years of new Shield on the way.... HOORAY! Lisa Btw, they keep throwing Rawlings (Close) name in the episodes, especially the last few. I know she said she would do a few guest appearances, maybe, but I think that after her daughter finishes her Senior year of high school (this may), Glenn will leave New York and rejoin the cast.

Zowie, girlfriend, you have unstoppable optimism! I *HOPE* you're right... but I'm not inclined to agree. Maaaaaybe a 7th season (numerically speaking) if a filming schedule works out and the biggies are up for shutting it down with a bang--and I think that depends on the ratings for the "back ten". More than that, I seriously doubt. I'm betting Chiklis, Mazzaro, Pounder, Karnes and perhaps others are ready to move on to other projects. Chiklis esp. And while FX & advertisers cater to the viewers you mention, they have enough money to replace The Shield with something else. They've shown us that potential with "Rescue Me", "Nip/Tuck", "Thief"etc.

I don't think so. Ryan has integrity; he wouldn't want to stretch it out like Ally McBeal and ruin the show, and I think that's pretty wise.

The thing is that those shows aren't The Shield. I have watched both. Nip Tuck already went bonkers early and hasn't been able to return since. Rescue me is nothing more than an ER with Firemen. The Shield is ground breaking in so many ways. I agree it shouldn't last *forever*, i.e. past a season 9, but I think Season 9 is coming - with a *bang*.

How many more times can Vic and the ST avoid IAD and aceveda? I love this show and don't want it to end. However, They are already repeating story lines, or at least continuing ones from season1. I would rather see them end it then jump the shark. THey almost jumped the shark in season 4 and that sucked. Nope we will have the back 10 then MAYBE one more season.

I love the show too, but would rather see it end on a high note then have it turn to crap. All indications are that the ten upcoming episodes will spell the end of the show, and I can live with that, as long as SR remains true to the spirit of the show and ends it with dignity.

I would rather see them end it then jump the shark. Love it! Jumping the shark is one of the funniest TV allusions EVER. I grew up watching those old-school re-runs with my parents. Nothing funnier than seen Fonzie in a leather jacket and those tight and VERY short trunks.

See the thread (started on 3/14/06) on the interview with Shawn Ryan on NPR--he speaks directly on this subject. theshieldrap.proboards45.com/index.cgi?board=apbs&action=display&thread=1142374258

Even before Shawn Ryan said it in the intervew, I was feeling that the way the season has progressed there could only be (at best) one season left after the back 10 episodes.

i just seen a live show of Regis and Kelly and Michael Chiklis was on there. Regis says that tonight is that mid-season finale. But Chiklis corrected him and said that tonight is the season 5 finale and the other ten will be season 6. So it does look like we get screwed out of 3 or 4 more episodes. And he also said that the show won't be back until next year because he has to go shoot the fantastic four over the summer. So i don't think we will see a season 7 because shawn ryan's new show The Unit is getting excellent reviews and i think he will try to get that show to go strong. Besides if -spoiler removed by E- supposed to get killed tonight or the back ten episodes where does the story go from there. Kavanaugh is the strike team's biggest "enemy" and if they were to get pass this i don't see anything else stopping them because there will be no other cases to unravel, unless claudette opens up armadillos death in the cage and vic's relationship with tio but that's a long shot in the dark. Just thought i would share all of this

It's funny you say 18-49 because I'm 18 and my dad is 49 and we both love this show

Hey snuber.... what's up? I would LOVE watching the show with my dad! How cool?!
For the topic at hand, I think it's been established that next "season" is still really the second half of S5. Contractually speaking, this is all one big 21 episode season, remember?

Well I heard part two of season five now called season six, which will hopefully start airing in January and there will be a season 7.

ETA: forget it, after i posted, it's normal size (small) Refresh the page so all the codes will reload. Yeah, that happens on occasion if the member uses an image larger than 100 x 100 for their avatar (*ahem* cough cough), or posts a photo larger than 600 x 600. Sometimes images are not resized by the code for whatever reason. Reloading the page should fix it.... maybe.
