I suppose before I get going that I should acknowledge that I watch the FX channel far too much. Even outside seasons of The Shield, FX remains one of the only two channels my TV remains on and it's a fair assumption that the little logo may even be burning in. ;D
Well.. having FX on at almost every moment you watch TV allows for you to see the preview they aired after the episode repeatedly and every variation that gets formed along the way to the next. So let's assume you find some other channels interesting and stray away from FX say, once, maybe twice a week. Even then it seems that we are getting many key plot pieces and lines that may be more appropriate in the moment of the show.
I can't possibly know the ramifications of what will happen with Vic and Shane from the current previews, but it seems vic is carrying a revolver (not his service weapon) talking about how they are going "to do this together". Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions or should just change the channel when a preview comes on. I'm a bit more adamant about how the previews concerning Kavanaugh (sp?) and Lem's interrogation/blackmailing will affect the viewing experience.
It's all speculation. I just remember how some scenes and even episodes last year were tainted by the previews. Not having cable in the past saved me many hours and from the majority of shield previews.

I hear ya! I have a love/hate relationship with spoilers and previews, and I can really empathize here. I can also clearly feel the other side, too. Sometimes I don't like the feeling of " I know exactly what's gonna happen" that I get during an episode -- because of the preview. Spoilers do that in a way, but you still never know how it will play out; spoilers are mainly just word of mouth (sight of type?), or sometimes a still image. From reading a spoiler, I can imagine how the scene will look, sound, feel.... but I don't know until the show airs. But the previews give it all away; setting, lighting, camera angles, dialouge, tone, costuming, props, facial expressions. Too much. Last season I refused to watch the previews after ep. 9 or 10. They were ruining the show for me. I wouldn't watch FX at all, actually. However, right now I'm loving the hell out of them and I can't get enough. FX is my "go to" channel right now. I heard Shawn Ryan address the issue in an episode commentary -- forgive me for not knowing which season/ep (I will guess S4) -- where they were sharing stories about if/how they watch the show when it airs. SR commented that after the show he usually ends up calling FX to complain about the preview for the next ep. He thinks they give too much away too, Tek.

As I started the thread I knew I was being a bit lazy... I don't like to post w/out being a bit more articulate. I think you probably verbalized the issue perfectly. I'm not sure I even had broken it down to what you said but when I read it I realized that must be playing a large part of it for me.
Hopefully the preview is (at least in the revolver scene) misleading us, at least in the moment. I don't know how I feel about the seemingly obvious movement of Vic "jumping dirty" again. If that is the case then I don't want to be led there early in a preview. I suppose I have to stop watching previews.
*off topic - the seen with Kavenaugh in the previews prior to Ep 1 were amazing with the 'melt down' siren sounding; or at least that's how I heard it.
