uh oh
The new (Jan. 16-22, p.32) TV Guide had this to say about Laura Harring on The Shield:
Jeers to Laura Harring for her indefensible performace as an attorney on The Shield. Her stilted acting style worked on the soap Sunset Beach and in David Lynch's surrealist masterpiece Mulholland Dr. (Also memorable for Harring's steamy love scene with Naomi Watts). But when pitted against a brutally naturalistic actor like Michael Chiklis, Harring seems painfully stiff. Or maybe we just miss Glenn Close.
-end-
The reviewers have seen like four episodes so they have something to base this on - hopefully she's not as bad as all that, especially seeing as how she's going to play a major role

Well it seems they liked Glenn Close and hate Harring, and I hated Glenn Close... so logically I'll like Harring. Hopefully.

What the hell does TV guide know anyways?! They think shows like American Idol and CSI are quality. Total crap in my mind, epically CSI

unfortunately, RTP, TV Guide (along with Entertainment Weekly) have been ardent supporters of the show from the very first episode so if they find fault with something there probably is some reason to be concerned - but, as Jimmycracker said above, they loved Glenn Close while many hardcore fans didn't like her at all so perhaps the opposite is true

Or it means I'll like Harring even less.

Hey jwc53531 if TV guide supported the shield so much, why haven't they ever featured them on a cover?

perhaps I should be more specific - certain writers like the show so it gets more attention - I'll bet it gets a cover before it goes off the air - the show also gets two more mentions in this weeks EW as well

if uve ever read tv guide, they give a lot of praise to fx and their original shows, and especially this year with the shield, theres been quite a few articles, i agree with jwc, i could see a cover of tv guide for the shield by the end of this season

Let's hope so The Shield deserves the props, and everybody see's that damn mag in the checkout lines so maybe it could spark some new fans!

Seems rather late in the game to entice new fans, but I suppose it could happen with a cover or two. And since when was TV Guide the definitive voice on quality television anyway? It's first and foremost a listing, or always was, and I've never seen it as much more.
I am much more inclined to care what Entertainment Weekly is saying or even Time or Newsweek. Now *that* would be a cover!

If Laura Harring plants a Mulholland Drive style liplock on either Tina or Danny, I can overlook any 'stilted' acting on her part.

Yeah, she was definitely stiff as a board tonight. Hopefully her role won't become too integral.

was she supposed to be Vic's love interest for a few episodes, i forget..>? or more an adversary? remember the chick vic dated in season 2 briefly - Marguerite MacIntyre played the woman woh ran the woman's shelter. She played miss rhode island on Seinfeld once and then she ends up a few years later on the Shield. She didn't stike me as having a particular range, but she nailed the goodie two-shoes Seinfeld part and I happened to like her performance on the Shield; a lot grittier for sure and on a crime drama as opposed to a comedy. Not that Laura Harring does have tons of range, but maybe TV Guide missed the nice contrast between her and Vic? Marguerite MacIntyre seemed more "human" in her role than Harring does THUS FAR, but I thought Harring was okay? If anything I liked how they didn't pander to her Mulholland Drive image and put on this designer outfit, tons of makeup..that's not the Shield way and I'm glad the writers stuck to how they want characters being portrayed on the show. I just think after one ep. we need to give it time; I wasn't that DISpleased with her performance. And yeah...if we do see her go at it with Vic or anyone...wow. That scene w/ her and Naomi Watts is forever burned in my memory... I love David Lynch.

Some people ARE stiff and uptight (how 'bout that pulled back hair?). Maybe she's playing a stiff, uptight character (not unknown in the lawyer ranks).
I agree with the folks who say, "Give her a chance."
