I think all the FX promo people simultaneously ejaculated upon seeing Whitaker win the oscar. Don't be surpised to see him billed in front of Chiklis in the ads for the next couple of months. Hey, is there any chance that this might be why they delayed the episodes until April?
But I digress. It's cool as hell to see a Shield actor winning such a prestigous award, and he gave the best damn speech of the night, which surprised me since he's normally a terrible speaker. Instead of unemotionally thanking a bunch random people, he gave a thoughtful analysis on what it means to be an actor. Well done good Sir!

Don't be surpised to see him billed in front of Chiklis in the ads for the next couple of months. I hope not. The one I'm most happy for is Martin Scorsese. That "Best Director" is only 10 movies over due.

Sorry, Lynch, but I thought FW was a bit full of himself in his acceptance speech.
And Jennifer Hudson, who didn't even win in the American Idol joke ... er, I mean contest, winning best supporting actress despite basically just singing in the movie (allegedly--this is what I heard on the radio from some guys this morning) only reaffirms my opinion of awards shows, in general.
I was surprised that they didn't give Best Actor to Peter O'Toole for sentimental reasons.
I did watch parts of the Oscars while also watching two different basketball games.
I thought the opening of the show was unbelievably stupid and boring. My favorite part of the evening was the song by Will Farrell (sp?) and the other guy parodying the Oscars. Now THAT was good ;D.

That "Best Director" is only 10 movies over due. I agree with you on both points. It would be a dumb thing to bill him in front of Chicklis. Personally, I think "The Departed" right up there close to "Casino" in terms of greatness. As you stated, long overdue.

I completely disagree with the point that his speech was arrogant. I found it inspiring and awesome. He won't be billed in front of Chiklis, nor should he be. However, it only brings more credibility to TS in the same way Glenn Close did. It's not like TS needs credibility, because the show speaks for itself. But the critics who rip on it for being too graphic or too corrupt or any of that B.S. when they haven't even watched the show might tune in just to see a performance, and then get sucked into the greatness of TS.

Boy it's hard to convey sarcasm over the Internet. I thought I set a good sarcastic tone with the ejaculation remark, but I guess not. My bad.

Boy it's hard to convey sarcasm over the Internet. I thought I set a good sarcastic tone with the ejaculation remark, but I guess not. My bad. I know what you mean, lynch. I posted a comment in another thread this morning that was dripping with sarcasm ... I wonder if that will be picked up by the person it was directed at? Someone else noticed, heh. As far as FW's acceptance speech being arrogant, I didn't see any other comment except mine that could be taken negatively (saying I thought he was a bit full of himself). That doesn't mean the same thing as arrogant, at least not IMO. It just seemed, I dunno, a little too staged ... disingenuous (even though I hate that word). You know, like "hey, I've won every award that exists, so now I'm really on a roll and I gotta come up with something really heavy for the biggest stage of them all." Maybe it was the way he delivered it--like he was looking toward the heavens. Mind you, that doesn't change my opinion of him as an actor. I've only seen him in TS (believe it or not), but I think he was simply fantastic last season--worthy of an Emmy (the only award he didn't get, ironically). His delivery of the "piss speech" was classic, superb, and got my vote for best line of the year.

I've only seen him in TS (believe it or not) Seriously?! You haven't seen a single movie with Forest Whitaker ever? Not even seen him in a small part like in Platoon or Fast Times At Ridgemont High? That's quite incredible.

I wasn't kidding. He might have been in something and I just didn't know it. I don't go out to the movies much. I just signed up for Blockbuster online and plan on getting a larger LCD TV soon (42" or more) , so I will be watching more movies.

But the critics who rip on it for being too graphic or too corrupt or any of that B.S. when they haven't even watched the show might tune in just to see a performance, and then get sucked into the greatness of TS. I agree with the second part about the critics, but I disagree with you saying that The Shield doesn't need credibility. Almost no one in my school likes The Shield, mostly because they're a bunch of 24 loving fanboys who want to give Jack Bauer a BJ. (The ironic thing is that there is a kid called BJ in my school who loves Jack Bauer) They bash The Shield for no reason saying 24 is far superiour, while they've never seen an episode. This can also be seen on IMDb, where more than half the ratings for the show are negative, which is completely ridiculous. Having watched a few episodes of 24, I can conclude that it's completely biased with the plot being recycled over and over. 24's absolutely overrated and The Shield is underrated. Although I do like the underground fanbase, it would be nice if The Shield got some recognition. I'm fed up with everyone obsessing over 24 (in my area at least) and would like the tables to turn. 24 sucks it and Vic Mackey could kill Jack Bauer in a second with NO weapons. Anyway, it would have been nice if Forest Whitaker thanked The Shield and maybe even Bloodsport, but then there would be a possibility of his career going down the drain. Bloodsport is one of my favourite movies of the 80s 'cause of its cheesiness; it absolutely fascinates me that I can watch it over and over again without getting bored of it. 4/4 stars
