Art and John Linson ("The Black Dahlia") are making a big push into TV, teaming with Kurt Sutter on a dark family drama set in the world of outlaw motorcycle clubs for FX.
Cabler will develop the series, tentatively titled "Charming, CA," about a young man facing a turning point after a lifetime of crime within a motorcycle gang. Title refers to the name of the fictional suburban town where the central family lives.
Sutter, an exec producer on FX cop drama "The Shield," will write the pilot script and exec produce alongside the Linsons.
He jumped at the chance to work on a project revolving around a group, he said, "has never been portrayed authentically in TV or film."
John Linson came up with the premise, being well acquainted with several members of such gangs in Northern California.
Main story in "Charming, CA" deals with the complexities of a multigenerational family steeped in organized crime.
"These guys are notorious and violent and everything you'd expect them to be, but they also have to do the everyday, the mundane. They have to be fathers who take their kids to practice, or take their wives out."
Project's main character, meanwhile, is an antihero at a crossroads. "He's not a Tony Soprano or a Vic Mackey," Sutter said. "He's still just a prince on the edge of becoming a man and deciding which way he's going to go."
Sutter expects to turn in a first script by the end of the year.
Producer is working on the Warner Bros. features "Outlaws," which he'll write and direct for producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, and "The Unforgettable," which he's adapting based on the videogame "Condemned: Criminal Origins."
Art Linson is producing the upcoming Paramount Vantage feature "Into the Wild" for writer-helmer Sean Penn.
ICM, Robert Myman and Field Entertainment rep Sutter. ICM also reps the Linsons.
