back on the old TSF board, ACC and I exchanged some posts regarding the timeline of the show - I see it's being mentioned again with the "2 1/2 years ago" quote in relation to Terry's murder - here's what we came up with (thanks to ACC wherever he is):
Here we go:
The first indication is in 1x03. Baseball season is in high gear. It seems like late spring, towards the finals. This is spring 2002. Then 1x13 must end by the time of Thanksgiving or thereabouts. Why? Here's why:
Because 2x01 begins at the first of 2003 or so. Because it's been five weeks since 1x13--that is established. 2x02 occurs only hours after 2x01 ends. 2x03 occurs the next day, after 2x02. Vic is shot in 2x03. He is out for three weeks. He returns in 2x04. This is the famous Dutch "Raiders-Super Bowl" statement, following the Super Bowl immediately. Hence, we trace it back and Season 1 must end around the end of November. In 2x05 Vic says that they have about two months to pull off the Armenian Money Train heist. They do so in 2x13--April 1st, 2003 (real time).
Season 3 is supposed to start up a little while afterwards. It was never firmly established how long.
The Season 3 timeline is somewhat difficult, but not too bad--the first six episodes pretty much occur within days of one another, perhaps at most two weeks spans between them all. At around 3x07 it becomes a bit more difficult, but some time has passed. Then in 3x09 Walon says that Claudette fucked up a huge case the week before--which was 3x08. 3x10 takes place hours after 3x09 ends, with Aceveda in the car...
3x11 takes place a couple of weeks after 3x10 because of the Corrine-Vic statements with regards to Matthew's tutor--and the Cuddler Rapist being put into solitary confinement for about that time, a week and a half to two weeks (he was nabbed in 3x10). In 3x11 Claudette talks to Julien about the "excessive force" situation with which he had to deal in 3x02 being "a couple months back"--indicating that the time between 3x06 and 3x07 was the "big break," most likely a couple weeks (in the couple of weeks before Aceveda starts hunting Juan for those three weeks, leading up to 3x08, 3x09 and 3x10). So... it's all been caught up with itself now and the timeline is about the "real time" of the season because of the breaks in-between. Thus Tavon was out more than "a couple of weeks" as Lem said or whatever it was, but not by *too much*. I think Lem was just kind of saying that, losing track of the time himself, perhaps...
in All In Aceveda says that the Money Train heist was committed "six months ago." That is a critical piece in the timeline. It means that there were approximately three months between 2x13 and 3x01 and thus far the third season has gone through the course of three months.
Season Four happens maybe 'eight weeks' after the end of S3 based on the comments about Lem and Shane taking time off from the Strike Team to work in Juvie and Vice respectively in 4x1 - I haven't quite done the math for the whole of S4 but (and this is just an assumption) - if either Taylor (based on the deleted scenes from 4x2) or Vic (based on his liason with Danny in the car while watching Monica's house in mid-season) is the father of Danny's baby then S5 picks up about five or six months after the end of S4
there you have it
