The first and only time I ever posted on the message board here was during season one. I wrote something about how great our crew was (and they are) and thanked the fans (and I do), and I also tried to clear up what had been the Great Mystery of the Board until then - "What kind of sunglasses does Vic wear?" I went to Danny Rowe, one of our prop guys, and found out they were Polo Sport 1048s, and that they were discontinued. But I passed on the info anyway. (And considering the great interest in these glasses from Shield fans, Polo really should have re-issued this style). Anyway, a couple of days later, someone had posted in my thread saying, that they were the real David Rees Snell, that an imposter had started this thread, that Vic didn't really wear Polo Sports and that he'd get back to everybody with the real info.
And the way the person wrote it was pretty convincing. I thought, if I didn't know I was me, I might think he was me. So that ended my posting on the board. If I couldn't tell Me from Not Me, then there was no point at all. Which means the fans lost out on all kinds of apparel information - because Ronnie -- and me, too, really - we're clearly all about the clothes.
Actually one thing I really like about The Shield is that we'll wear the same clothes again and again. In some shows the characters seem to have never-ending closets, you never see them wear the same thing twice. In The Shield, you'll see us in the same shirts, certainly in the same jeans and jackets - I think it really adds to the authenticity over time. Jay Karnes maintains that Dutch could wear the same suit every day and no one would notice. I don't know about that, but I do know that when our Wardrobe Department places his clothes, instead of hanging them in his room like they do for everyone else, they roll his suits around bottles of water to give it that rumpled Dutch look.
Shane wears a belt buckle with a skull on it, and bracketing the skull are the initials "R.G." Walton's convinced that it's Ronnie's belt buckle and he occasionally does a little routine about how Shane got it, that goes something like this.
Shane: Hey, I like that belt buckle, give me that belt buckle.
Ronnie: My dad gave it to me.
Shane: Yeah, man, but I like it.
Ronnie: But it's got my initials on it.
Shane: No one's gonna notice the initials - give me the belt buckle, it looks good on me!
Vic's still wearing those Polo Sports, by the way. They keep surviving every beatdown he delivers. Every season, though, I have to pick new sunglasses because Ronnie's have disappeared. Michael never has that problem, though. I think Chikie's stuff is locked away in a safe somewhere -- we know if something happened to those sunglasses they couldn't buy another pair.
