would it be possible, or even a good idea to have the recent posts link, link to a text only list of the thread and new author
It seems this would save bandwidth on both ends. Whether it's my connection or not... I think the site runs a bit slow. I'm happy we have it, but anything that might help I'll certainly say it.
Thanks
P.S. I think the main issue slowing browsing is the multiple locations and quality of sites hosting the avatars.

Thanks for your comments - I love hearing your feedback!
I would love to have the recent post list show up as a list, instead of all those posts.... It's a server-side programming issue, and one of the top complaints around the tech support boards.... Nothing can be done about it on the user side. Sorry.
Avatars.... where else could they be more reliably hosted, for example? I am unaware of reliability issues with the current host, so please do elaborate....

Without causing other users to be upset I don't foresee an easy solution. When pages load you see the status bar jump from one location to the next picking up everyone's avatars. I noticed this round it seems to be getting many from photobucket... which can be good, or bad... depending on how their server is well... serving things up.
I don't think any one particular host would alleviate the issue.... except for possibly hosting them within the board which I'm guess is severely limited in space. Most sites place a strict size (storage) and size (physical - for conformity). The physical while yes annoying to some does improve readability and is in the best interest of all. The storage size is what may just allow you to get the avatars on the same space as the board vastly increasing loading times for the page.
My Avatar in particular was made originally for use on xbox-scene where I junk out on xbox news and modifications. They limited the size to something like 64X64 pixels and a size... I think of 20 something kilobytes (very manageable) I even managed to create an animated Giff (animated avatar still fitting the size restriction.
Now... I know most users don't have the technical ability or inclination to size down avatars in either way, but there it is. Heck, they probably don't even want to be bothered to move their avatar to a new location. It likely would create a lot of work on all ends.
I think this is an incomplete thought so feel free to fire back and I'll try to fill in the holes.
edit: post and ye shall recall... what I wanted to mention, and I don't expect to really see troubleshot, unless it is user wide... is that the recent posts link... and I suppose other threads seem to lock down my browser (Firefox - Deer Park Alpha 2 which is not even considered a beta) This means tabbed browsing is out and actually it is impossible to scroll until the entire page loads, which can be quite lengthy.
