Whatcha think? Is she a better fit than you expected? If she hadn't accepted the role, is there another film actress who might have done as well?
Word has it four other 'big name' actresses were considered for the part. Any guesses?

I'd go for Joan Allen in the role. Eventhough she may not ideally fit the role as a cop on a gritty show like The Shield - she's waay too good looking - she was very commanding as a CIA supervisor in The Bourne Supremacy. So she should be able to handle the role as a police captain with ease.
And to answer your next question, I think its hard to say anything on Glenn Close. Its still too early. The next episode looks good though. Can't wait till then.

Wow, I hadn't thought of Joan Allen! Excellent. You never know how someone might fit perfectly, esp since seeing Glenn a little. I think she's doing a great job...but the work hasn't been too demanding yet, other than playing off of Michael Chiklis...though this might quite a feat for a big screen actress!
I'd thought of Jane Fonda, of all people! I bet she would have done just fine and what a score for her, eh? Career reborn! Or Sharon Gless? Maybe she wouldn't be tough ass enough.
I feel very good about Glenn...so far. She has the acting chops to make this role, as the others, a total success!

well, Francis McDormand was the second choice and Susan Sarandon was also on the shortlist - Close has been awesome so far - she's dropped right in like she was always there and the writers did the right thing by having Monica make a connection with almost every character in the first ep - sort of like establishing herself - I never had any doubts about Close - she's just to good of an actress - and the Monica character has really ramped up the show, IMHO

Her face and demeanor come across as someone with a lot of background and experience. A "looker" like Sharon Stone just wouldn't fit as well. Hmmm, who else was considered? I have no idea. I saw Faye Dunaway the other day and she might have been good.

I think she's doing good! I tried not to hold any expectations when I heard about her coming on (esp. since I've never been a big fan of hers but then again, I'm generally spending more time checkin' out the actors than the actresses. ;D ) and so far I'm pleased. I think the way they're working her character in is setting things up for some really good interactions and storylines.

I agree - Glenn Close has done great. The best part to me is that she seems to fit - good chemistry with the rest of the cast, and she's believable. I am able to forget that she's Glenn Close "Famous Actor" and see her as Captain Rawling. That to me is the make-or-break factor in how well someone does when added to an established series - and lets not forget, ladies and gents, that that is no easy feat.
