Wow! What a fantastic follow up to the season premiere. I was very impressed w/ that. Some thoughts: -Lem wants back in, badly...I"m loving that he rolled w/ Ronnie and Vic. "This is why you wear a helmet..." -"Ronnie knows the drill". Yeah, the show is about Vic, but Ronnie has always been in the background. He finally gets a couple of episodes as Vic's main wingman, and now he'll be relegated to videotape for probably most of the season, so they can fit in other storylines and flesh out the new "Anti-Gang Unit". -Loved the chase and the mustard-induced vomiting. Good stuff. How do you guys think Vic "gets back" at Aceveda? He had to play the humble routine when the boy he was chasing ended up shooting at cops, and also had to deal w/ having the garage sting guy being caught by Aceveda and not him. Something's gotta give in the next few weeks. -Who didn't see Aceveda's sexual issues coming a mile away...I think it's a certainty now that he plays an important role this season. -I think Close has fit in real well w/ the cast so far. -Anyone watch the Ep.3 promo?? Every drug or gang related bust goes through Vic?? Amazing... -Shane...wow...going behind Vic's back...Vic needing to protect him again...didn't know they'd play him as such a loose cannon. He's becoming dirtier than Vic ever was! I thought all in all, they did a great job making the flow of the episode happen. I watched it the second time right after, which always helps too. Thoughts guys? I need people to post on here...I've stopped going to the FX board because I can't handle the way it's set up!

I also noticed something interesting...remember Detective Gannon from Season 2, during the flashback episode; Vic and him made fun of Dutch, etc? On the men's bathroom stall, last night when they were fixing the men's room, there was some graffiti on it that said "Gannon" and then something else, like "Gannon shat here" or something. Interesting reference I thought...esp w/ Gilroy coming back into the fold during the same episode.
Katie Seagal; that was her right? Playing Gilroy's wife? Didn't notice her name in the Guest Starring credits when I watched the episode the second time.

A word about Ronnie from Kurt Sutter in this week's Weblog (it's on the shield's official website and it seems like they'll actually be updating it every week..this week's entry is very insightful).
"What of ambition and fear? We know many of the dark secrets in Vic's closet - killing a cop to name one. We know David's dirty little secret - "Let me see that mouth." This season we will reveal some others as well. Shane. We already see him manipulating Army, testing his loyalty. How far will he go to protect his new family? Lemonhead. How far will Lem go to put his fractured family back together? And Ronnie. Ah, yes, the forgotten son, Ronnie Gardocki. A word about Ronnie: Dave Snell, the actor who embodies Ronnie, is best friends with our Maestro (Shawn Ryan). He agreed to help Shawn out and essentially work as an extra on the pilot. When the series got picked up, Dave came along. Unfortunately there are only so many characters you can service with story, so because Ronnie was never conceived as a series regular, he's often relegated to off-camera footwork. I would like to personally commend Dave Snell of a thankless job well done. He has given Ronnie - with no help from our writing - dimension and personality. This season he is the rock of the strike team. The only constant in an ever- changing, often dangerous, environment. Kudos, Dave Snell, you're "on it". "

I guess no one likes my thread ;D
Something else I noticed - at the end, after Vic and Nancy talk about Gilroy, Vic is standing alone and they spend a good 20 seconds on that scene. His eyes go to the hole which will hold the casket, to his ex-wife, to the street. Then he puts on his sunglasses and kind of looks around. Foreshadowing for something...? I thought at first it was just a cool scene where he puts his sunglasses back on to say, "I'm back; I got the job to head up anti-gang, I'll be kicking ass again real soon" but now I"m not so sure.

Thoughts guys? I need people to post on here...I've stopped going to the FX board because I can't handle the way it's set up! I'll have to watch it more carefully--I was kind of deconcentrated because I knew I was facing a couple of hours of work after the show. I agree with your observations, though I'm not sure I would say "I saw it coming" to Aceveda's reaction to watching the rape video. In fact, I might have thought he'd have the opposite reaction. He DID seem to have the opposite reaction when he was empathizing (showing "compassion") with the rape victim in the interrogation room. Or is this just a sign that his whole world was turned upside down by his own rape? I also think that Close has worked in nicely. As for Capt. Rawling, Aceveda's warning that she should watch for Vic kind of rang hollow after he took all the credit for salvaging the garage sting that she basically handed to him. I liked the askance look she gave him when she found out. Gee, I hope they didn't have to do too many takes on the mustard vomiting scene--gross! It was fun to imagine what was going through Vic's mind when he found out that Shane is in cahoots with Antwon--seeing in Shane what others saw in himself; at the same time, worrying that Shane's antics were going to screw up his own plans. I hope to re-watch tonight when I try to pick up the "best lines." This was an ep that needs more than one viewing--at least for me!

Fju! I love your threads and your commentary. I am so tempted to say something now but I want to watch the ep again when I get home tonight. My first impression is "I loved it!" but I need to study it a bit to respond. Stay Tuned!!!

I *will* say that the rape video scene did not surprise me. I saw that coming when he closed the blinds... I thought, gees, is he going to watch a porno video or something?? Ah...yes!! Fascinating psychological process going on with Assinvader (Assinvaded?)... he was being a total a-hole with everyone, then he's Mr Touchy-Feely with the rape victim? Nah. I don't buy that one! Something more is going on there... sheesh, I need to shut up til I get a chance to see it all again and formulate a theory worth sharing here!! Overall, I give last night's ep an A and last week's a B+

Wow, I didn't even realize that was her--has she lost a lot of weight? And the corpse didn't look like Gilroy at all. I was trying to picture it without the beard but they only showed it for a couple of seconds. That rendition of "Amazing Grace" was weird. From Epguides.com: "NOTE: Two stars who appear in this episode but are listed as Uncredited are Katey Sagal (wife of Kurt Sutter) as Nancy Gilroy, and in his final appearance, John Diehl (by technical definition) as the corpse of Ben Gilroy. End Song: "Amazing Grace" by Dropkick Murphys."

Yeah, Katie Segal *has* lost a lot of weight...all that hair, hairspray, and war paint she used to wear as Peg Bundy on Married w/Children! I am so used to her being campy that I was distracted by her presence as Gilroy's wife... more so than Glenn Close being around now! Also, the black D.A. chick...she's a familar face but from where? Probably some sitcom yrs ago. I don't like to see these "familiar" faces in The Shield. One of the best things about the series has been its use of extremely talented unknowns. When a known appears, it's distracting and throws off everything else (for me). It's as if I had been watching a documentary and suddenly this celebrity shows up! My brain kind of goes, "Oh yeah, it's just a television series." I like the wacked version of Amazing Grace, which has been done a thousand times, a thousand different ways. It was perfect for yet another outstanding Shield montage!

I had more the feeling of him seeing himself in Gilroy's place. Hearing how the wife hated him, the loss of a good career, etc. All things that can easily Happen (and somewhat is happening) to Vic. He looks at his wife who isn't liking him and looking in the grave realizing that could be him. Just my thoughts! Ky

Not to jump back too far in the posts, but what the heck... Regarding Acevada, I won't say I was _surprised_ that he still has issues, but how they manifested themselves in this ep really threw me for a loop. Not so much his sympathy for the raped prostitute...that was empathy that any people who share similarly traumatic experiences might be expected to feel...but the whole masturbating (what's the filter going to change THAT to, Chem?) to the video...well, that was troubling. Its clear that it was a POWER thing more than a SEX thing, but question is...how is Acevada going to keep that in check now that he's a councilman and so much more in the public eye? Will he go from imagining himself as the rapist in the video to really doing it?
