The Shield has always appealed to me because of its reality. It has never felt contrived or forced. I think if Ronnie and Vic would have tracked down Shane and Mara and Vic would have capped Shane, then Ronnie shooting Vic, that would have been to easy - too cliche. But what they did was put Vic in the worst hell he could imagine. Not living his own life, going to prison with one false step. Sitting at a desk typing reports.
The acting in the last episode was so good that it's hard to let go of these characters and not let them develop further. I think Goggins's acting in the final couple episodes was worthy of an emmy.
But back to Vic. He's sitting at his desk pondering his future. No family. No friends. No respect from colleagues. No Badge. No Strike Team to crack skulls with. Absolutely brilliant. At the end I despised and pitied Vic like I did during Season One. But he got his comeuppance. It's almost like being sentenced to having to listen to Barry Manilow forever. Brutal.

I think my problem with the finale at the moment is that it was a little too predictable. After 7.12, "Possible Kill Screen", you kind of just assumed that: a) Shane would kill himself/his family (hell, I thought Mara was asking to die at the end of 7.12) b) Vic had already sold Ronnie out c) Vic gets immunity d) Serial Killer boy would kill his mother
These events were all VERY clearly telegraphed after 7.12. You never really expect the writers - especially not the writers of The Shield - to go the way that it seems so clearly to be going. Gilroy in season 1, Armadillo in season 2, the entire money train fiasco, Shane and Antwon Mitchell -- you never knew what was going to really happen next with them.
And then you come into the 75 minute finale, expecting... I dunno... expecting more than what was set-up in 7.12, and you don't really have anything happen outside of what has already been telegraphed. Which is just... weird, for The Shield. I was utterly spoiler free, and had heard nothing more than "fans of the show will be very satisfied with the finale" and that it was "unexpected", so I was expecting something... different. The only thing that I did expect, that didn't happen, was for Claudette to go further into the deep-end.
Everything that occurred made sense -- but it was also just obvious. The Shield has always excelled in shocking viewers, getting the adrenaline pumping, while also being poignant and being true to the storyline - Lem's ending was fitting and the entire season basically built up to it, but you were also blown away by it and couldn't believe it actually happened. This ending is fitting, it's poignant, but my heart was never really racing. I was shocked by the sudden-ness of Shane's death, and saddened by it, but I guess I wanted that last dosage of adrenaline that The Shield is so famous for supplying, and I just didn't get it. Hmph.
That being said - I don't hate or even dislike the finale. I just have this lingering feeling of dissatisfaction.

I agree for the most part that it was a good ending. I feel as though they could have given more story to the Dutch serial killer story, but thats just what I think.

I disagree that it was predictable. I thought for sure that Vic and Ronnie would catch up to Shane and kill him and then Ronnie would shoot Vic. But it ended so much more appropriately for Vic.
To me it was kind of like Gollum in Lord of the Rings. You liked him. You rooted for him to change. But when his time had come, it had come. By series end I really was rooting for Vic to get his. But death was too good for him in a way. The way it ended was so much more difficult for him.

I didn't see the Shane/family suicide coming. So no, that wasn't predictable for me. And whilst the betrayal of Ronnie, Lloyd killing his mother and Vic riding a desk were predictable, you never truly knew it was going to happen. It was just always stuck at the back of your mind, waiting for something to derail the whole plan so something could be salvaged. I think that was the beauty of it - Ronnie was arrested in front of Vic, Vic self destructed as he was shown his once best friend's suicide photo's and Ronnie's arrest.. for me, anyway, I watched that episode with my jaw dropped for a long period of time. It was an excellent finale which wrapped up a lot of loose ends and gave me an ending I was very much satisfied with.
