Shane made many a mistake as a fugitive. Rather than high-tailing it over the border with his one hundred thousand dollars with his family he stuck around LA, much to Mara's protestations. Then he has his pregnant wife and child take part in an armed robbery with him (not that Jackson is guilty of anything, of course). And then he lets Mara keep their gun, waiting outside in a car while he snorts cocaine laced with speed, which played an enormous role in deciding his eventual fate. By the time the much-vaunted presidential motorcade came into town, Mara was in no shape for a car ride. (I just suffered a shoulder injury recently and the pain was excruciating during a short local car ride.) Not to mention Shane and Mara stupidly kept that bag of 100,000 bucks in such an easy-to-get-to place, and lost it to those two Byz Lat hoods.
The only thing Shane and Mara did right, really, was set the wheels in motion for Vic to get busted in 7x11 Petty Cash.
What do you think? Would you have run for Mexico, and then keep going?
Of course, all of this started with Shane choosing Two-Man to take out Ronnie. Should have hired a professional contract killer with that hundred grand, Shane!
I felt profoundly saddened, to the point of depression for a while, after Shane's mass murder/suicide, but he really was kind of an idiot in some ways. I felt sorry for him and especially Mara, Jackson and their unborn child, but damn, as always with him, he kept setting himself up to fail.

In hindsight, you can say staying back was a mistake, because we know how it all ends. But I think he had a point at the time - it was going to be awfully hard to escape with all the man-power on their asses and no passports, and no idea about how much the police knew. Remaining in LA for a few days (and that's all it was, even though it spanned across 5 episodes) until the Presidential motorcade came through wasn't completely stupid.
The horrible robbery of the 2 gamblers though - that was stupid. And that was the undoing of the Vendrell family. There would have been so much easier ways to get money, then to take that risk.

I agree. Before I even knew the gamblers backstory I knew it was bad news bears for Shane and that he should have hightailed it out of there. I really wished he wouldn't have played that Do what I say or I am gonna rat you out game with Vic. He should have just kept a low profile and got the hell out of there before anyone was the wiser. R.I.P. Shane and family.

For me, the biggest was trying to kill Vic and Ronnie as he was still emotional and angry over the failed attempt. Setting up a gangbanger with a murder charge? He wasn't thinking. It wasn't a very smart plan to begin with and I think it was only a matter of time before it was all revealed.
The second mistake was not testifying to put Vic/Ronnie away earlier before Vic cut the deal. He wanted to cut a deal way too late. Cut the deal, cut Mara off before she commits murder and Vic and Ronnie rot in prison whilst Shane gets a potentially light sentance. He should have cut all ties as soon as he was set up to die.

Or Vic could have bullshit about having immunity from the get go. Shane didn't really need much convincing other than Vic's word that was the case.

His lawyer told him the cops didn't have a deal for him in the phonecall he made before he called Vic. This made him believe that the deal was real.

Vic wouldn't have lied about something like that. Too risky. Shane could have tried to cut a deal to confirm it. The lawyer followed by Vic's confidence with bragging confirmed it for Shane. That, and the fact that Vic reminded him that Shane would probably be killed in prison by Antwon Mitchell (or 'Antwon Mitchell-ville', as he called it).
I do wonder what Shane wanted, though. Probably to help them get out of town or something.
