So... 2 episodes to go before this horrible, awesome tale comes to its conclusion. This question would probably be better asked AFTER those 2 episodes air (because there damn well better be some of the best moments of the entire series in them), but I'm really impatient and Shield obsessed at the moment, so I thought I'd ask it now. There's been questions asking about a favourite season and a favourite episode under each season -- but I haven't seen this question asked yet -- what has been THE moment of The Shield for you? The one that made you soil yourself, the one that made you have to lift your jaw from the floor, the one that you had to double check to see if it actually happened, because it was JUST. THAT. GOOD? The one that was perfect in absolutely every way, and you could not have asked more of. And yes, try to narrow it down to one - but feel free to have honourable mentions. For me... Vic confronts Shane in 6.6, Chasing Ghosts. Absolutely the most amazing thing I have ever seen. Everything about it is just so pitch perfect. At first, I had problems with Shane saying incredibly stupid things ( “You’ll learn to be okay with it, you just need time”; “you think this has been easy for me, carrying all this alone?”) and Vic being a hypocrite of the highest order ( “Jesus Christ, what did you turn me into?!” “I’M NOT AN EXECUTIONER!”), but then I realised… it was perfectly in line with each of their characters. And it was perfect that both the characters called out each other on such bullshit remarks. The look of dread on Walton Goggins’ face, the pure sadness on Chiklis’, and how it just crumples when he gets confirmation by Shane that he killed Lem – broke my f**kin’ heart. How it turns into just flat out rage, and how Shane’s contrition and regret slowly turns into cold justification. f*cking AWESOME. Such brilliant acting of the highest god damned calibre. I had such unbelievably high hopes for this confrontation, and they were all perfectly met – and my high hopes are NEVER met. I still get goosebumps watching this scene, and I could probably quote it verbatim. There is just no way that this scene could have possibly been any better than it was. Honourable mentions: 1. Vic burning Armadillo – absolutely floored me. Before this scene, I really, really liked The Shield, and would not miss an episode. After this scene, the show has owned my soul, and I needed to own all the episodes officially on DVD and watch the special features. 2. Shane and Lem and the grenade sandwich – I actually tuned out of The Shield after season 4. I live in Australia, and we haven’t aired The Shield since the better half of forever, and I had no access to season 5. I read what happened in the finale, went “WTF?!” and got my hands on it all. Obviously, a bit of the impact throughout the entire season was a little lost on me, because I knew how it all ended before I even began it – but it still absolutely gutted me. Again, perfectly acted, perfectly staged. I couldn’t imagine how I would have reacted to this scene without being spoiled. 3. The final bar scene from the season 4 finale – probably an unconventional choice, but it seems like one of the only times, bar season 1, where everybody was in high spirits and getting along. It just makes me happy to watch the scene – and then really sad. Also brief mentions to the final scene of the season 3 finale, the Vic and Shane confrontation in season 4.8, Dutch nabbing the serial killer in Season 1, and I should stop, because I could go on forever. Soooo… that was a lot of text. On to the more important question – What is YOUR favourite *EVER* moment of The Shield?

Great thread. And I love the Shane-Vic confrontation about Lem and how you describe it. That scene is definitely one of the best in my book. But I still don't think The Shield or any show has EVER topped the visceral HOLY F*CKING SH*T! reaction I had to the murder of Terry Crowley. As I've written here before (a "long time ago" back in July ) I did not start watching The Shield until I caught a few reruns on Spike TV in June of this year. They were from Season 3. I didn't even know what season the show was in for new episodes, but the reruns of season 3 grabbed me enough to purchase the S1 DVDs while on a trip to California. So I start watching The Shield 1:01 Pilot on the plane ride back to Texas on my laptop with some gawd-awful crappy headphones and I CAN'T EVEN HEAR THE F*CKING DIALOGUE through these damn ear phones over the droaning hum of the plane's engines. So the first time I watched the Pilot I had to READ THE DIALOGUE using closed captioning because I couldn't hear it completely. When Vic turns and so coldly puts the bullet under Terry's eye, I think I audibly shouted HOLY F*CKING SHIT. I couldn't tell if I said it out loud or not because I still had on headphones and the noise of engine etc. But a few people in another row gave me some weird looks, so at least part of it must have been audible. I watched a few more episodes on that plane ride, got home and watched the remaining entirety of Season 1 THAT NIGHT - up til like 4 am. I hopped up the next day, drove to Circuit City, and bought every Shield DVD I could get my hands on. Ended up watching all the way through Season 5 on DVD and even paid $20 to download Season 6 from iTunes all in the span of less than two weeks (mind you, I have a wife, a 2-year-old daughter, and a busy career - so this marathon was not easy to squeeze in - my wife still complains about the "two weeks I lost you to that damn show"). The Shield is the best show I've ever seen (even better than my previous favorite, The West Wing, which is different and wonderful in its own ways). The Shield has certainly "lived up to" the scene of Terry's murder. But, in my mind, it has never surpassed that "moment" (though it has come damn close). Surpassing that scene, for me, may not be possible (though, as you say, still 2 more episodes to go). About once a week I still pull up a YouTube clip of the final 3 minutes of 1:01 (basically the Kid Rock soundtrack montage). I still get chills watching it. That is THE BEST SCENE EVER. My runners up would be, in no particular order: - Shane-Vic confrontation about Lem's death
- Shane dropping the grenade in Lem's lap and the sheer agony in Shane's voice as he says "Lem! I'm sorry!" Right then and there when I watched that scene I knew I would be watching Walton Goggins' career for a very long time.
- The scene when Kavanaugh is busted for setting up Vic. The disgust on Claudette's face.
- The scene of Shane blubbering, crying, and snot-nosed finally admitting to Mara that he killed Lem.
- The Aceveda mouth rape scene (didn't even get the "full effect" the first time I saw this on Spike TV rerun)
- The scene of the Strike Team standing and staring silently at the money train cash. The looks on their faces. WOW! Acting without words is a greatly underappreciated and powerful form of the art.
- The Strike Team fighting with Lem while he tries to burn the money train cash.
- Claudette dressing down Vic and Aceveda in Aceveda's office over the Tio/Armadillo stuff
- The look on Shane's face when he knows Two-Man is about to give him up to Dutch while the whole Barn watches on closed-circuit TV. Don't even remember what he said, something like "I'll be right back" and then it's off to the races. But that one
instance, that LOOK of resignation on Shane's face. WOW!
- The opening of Pilot with Aceveda talking like the classic politician interlaced with scenes of Strike Team chasing that guy and Vic kicking his ass to get the dope
- Aceveda talking to Claudette about Vic in Pilot. The whole "Al Capone with a badge" line from Aceveda vs. Claudette's line about beating up some "n*gger or sp*c".
I know there are other scenes. But it's been a while since I watched the whole series (a few months ). And many episodes I've still only seen once. I plan to watch the whole series start to finish again soon after the final episode.

You two have covered it pretty well! I don't know if it was the "best moment ever" of the show, but the one that has stuck with me -- the moment that changed my opinion of television and started me on a path of obsession was when Vic shot Terry. I wasn't recording it, there were no reruns. I wouldn't see that scene again until the DVDs came out a year later, but it stuck with me. I could not believe that a show would have a cop kill off a seemingly major character and fellow cop in the very first episode. It sounds a bit ridiculous to say that a moment of television changed my life, but it kind of did. If I hadn't become so obsessed with The Shield, I never would have joined this forum, I never would have met chem, CC, jwc, or eekay in person, and I never would have met the cast and crew on the set nor been in the Promosode.

My top 10 as of right now (in no order):
- The Overcome montage to end season 2. - The ending of 5-01 with that Coldplay song playing while showing the contrast of the ST beating some punk and re-establishing themselves while Lem is getting arrested. - Vic burning Armadillo's face. - Terry's death. - "I've done worse" from the most recent episode. - Antwan Mitchell's line to Shane - "From now on, when I say suck my dick, you say 'you want me to lick ya balls daddy?'" - Vic in the hospital bed talking to Shane about playing golf together in 2-03. - Everybody celebrating at the end of season 4. - Shane's face as Two-Man fingers him for the Ronnie hit and Shane's subsequent sprint from the precinct. - The guys syaing goodbye to Lem set to Disarm by Smashing Pumpkins in 5-10.
I'm a sucker for scenes set to music.

In no particular order, ISWDI's list:
1. Terry's death. 'Nuff said. 2. Vic's breakdown in the kitchen after he realizes what he did and Corrine and the kids are gone. ColdPlay's music only made it more haunting. 3. Lem's death. I was shaking when I saw what Shane did. 4. When the Decoy Squad went naked through the Barn. 5. Shane's breakdown and watching his life spiral out of control when gangbanger Two Man guy fingered him for Ronnie's attempted murder. 6. Ascevada's rape scene. 7. Lem's goodbye done to Disarm. Powerful stuff. 8. Dutch solving that case and crying in his car when he's done. 9. Shane and Mara in the Thunder Chicken, holding each other after they realize they have no one but each other. 10. Vic's "kiss my ass" speech to Claudette.
Guess we'll see next week how it grows.

The 42 second silent struggle for Vic to remove his veneer before confessing his sins to Olivia is my new favorite moment. Brilliant acting! And I don't know if it was makeup, or lighting, or just the brilliant acting (perhaps a combo of them), but he physically changed during that scene -- he looked old and worn down once he let those words start flowing.

In no particular order, ISWDI's list: 8. Dutch solving that case and crying in his car when he's done. Had forgotten about that scene. But yes, THAT was powerful television. Jay Karnes is so underrated.

Well, the Terry murder didnt really make that big of an impact on me AT THE TIME because I wasnt as invested into the show as what Iam now. As none of us were (It was the 1st friggin episode, lol). But, none the less it was still a big moment in The Shield. Anywho, here is my list:
1.) Shane killing Lem.[/u] I'll never forget where I was, what I was thinking, the chills and goosebumps running all over my body. It was truly the most[/u] unbelievable and unforgettable moments in the history The Shield IMHO. (5x11 - Postpartum)
2.) The Shane Vic Confrontation.[/u] When Vic finally found out the truth that Shane killed Lem, the look in his eyes and the tone in his voice painted a thousand feelings, thoughts, and emotions into my mind. Another moment I wont soont forget. (6x06 - Chasing Ghosts)
3.) Vic killing Guardo.[/u] Ohly crap. I mean honestly, do I have to say much more? "HE KILLED LEM!!!" Dont you remember his BODY, his FACE?! You think you can just forget that, HUH?! Dont you think he deserves to DIE for what he did?!" Ahh powerful. (6x03 - Back to One)
4.) Burning Armidillos face.[/u] Another moment that was just like, Oh my god. Did he really just do that? Kind of hard to believe someone could honestly do that. Just shows me what kind of brutal, tragic, and thug-like man Vic Mackey truly is. (2x02 - Dead Soldiers)
5.) Gilroy killing mexican thug.[/u] Many probably dont remember what was said between Vic and Gilroy right after. But again, Chiklis` acting goes off the freakin charts in this scene also. (1x12 - Two Days of Blood)
6.) Shane confessing to Mara.[/u] Someone already hit this one on the head. I almost cried a little myself in this scene. I actually felt sorry for Shane. Which proves what an excellent actor Goggins is. (6x05 - Haunts)
7.) Another uni's buddy shoots Connie.[/u] Vic loses it. I love it when Vic loses it. Sends chills down my spine. I'll just quote him again. "Shes dieing. You didnt need to do that. JEEZUS! WHAT THE HELL IS THE MATTER WITH YOU?! You STUPID piece of shit!!" As he closes his eyes with a gun pointed at him by a crazy man. Awesome! (2x06 - Homewreckers)
8.) Season 2 Finale, Money Train Robbery.[/u] Everything about the season 2 finale rocked. The robbery, and the killer montage at the end with Live - by Overcome playing. I loooove watching this episode. Out of everyones faces, Ronnies is the best to watch IMHO at the end of that. (2x13 - Dominoes Falling)
9.) Shane telling the team Mara stole the Money Train cash.[/u] Every part of that scene is A++++. From Vic's "I knew this was gunna happen" look, to Lems "You're an idiot, Ima kick your ass attitude", to Ronnies "We are friggin screwed, you better save us" talk. I must quote this to from Lem, "...Ya well Im not. So unless she's got a pussy that cures cancer..." lol Then him and Shane get into it. Priceless. (3x10 - What Power Is)
10.) The bottom bitch scene.[/u] Vic, once again, goes so far over the edge in such brilliant fasion. The gun in the mouth. The "BACK OFF!" shout to Lem. And the off the hook line, "Smooths MY bitch. Which makes YOU, my bottom bitch!" Vic, you're one crazy son of a bitch! (3x03 - Bottom Bitch)
Yes, I left out stuff from Season 7. I wanted to dwell more on the past of The Shield rather then the present. It takes me 3 or 4 times to watch an episode over the course of several months before I get a real feel for it. Weird, I know, just the way I like to watch my shows.
Ahhh, I truly do love THE SHIELD![/i][/u]

Heh. I love how basically, if we combine all of everyone's favourite scenes, we basically have... the entire show. Just shows how awesome The Shield really is. Well, the Terry murder didnt really make that big of an impact on me AT THE TIME because I wasnt as invested into the show as what Iam now. As none of us were (It was the 1st friggin episode, lol). But, none the less it was still a big moment in The Shield. Yeah, I'm on the same boat. I didn't really know who this Vic Mackey fella WAS when I first started watching, so when I saw him pop Terry in the face, my reaction was "woah. Wait...what?" I was kind of confused more than anything, because there was no indication that Vic really knew Terry was a rat before then, so I... didn't really initially understand why he had just shot him. I'm slow that way, though. Also, Claudette's meltdown, and Vic's confession, will also go down as some of the best ever moments for me. Come ooon finale! Deliver more! Delivery something that will usurp the throne of the Vic/Shane confrontation in Chasing Ghosts!
