Hello there! Yes, I know that phrase is not new, and has probably been uttered many, many times before. But it was an eye-catching way to say hello, was it not? Feel free to hit me with a sock full of quarters if you're sick to death of it. Hello! My name is Jen, and you can either call me that, or (as most people find convenient on other boards I frequent) abbreviate my screen name as Dk. Any other permutation or a creation of your own will also garner a response (as long as I know you're talking to me), but those are the two I'm used to. So, the initial welcome thread here said, "type, type, type away." Will do, but sometimes I need to be told to slow my roll. I tend to run off at the fingers a bit, especially when I'm really exited about something. And I am really excited about The Shield. I don't have cable, and don't watch all that much television in the first place, so I've waited after each season for the DVD's to come out, and carefully avoided any and all conversation online or irl regarding episodes I haven't yet seen, which is why you've never seen me here before. I had the opportunity to catch all the way up now, through season six, so I think it's safe. Beyond that, I'll save all deconstruction, odes, gushing, crying, and other opinions about the series for the boards. I am 36, black, and looking to revolutionize the image of the dedicated spinster/crazy cat lady. I only have one cat, named Richard, but I can see having others, instead of children, for the rest of my life. I love dogs, but wouldn't own one while I live in an apartment. I love kids, and I think parenting is a remarkable undertaking, but I also think some folks are meant to have children, and some aren't. I think I was meant to be a cool auntie, and I am, to five nieces and nephews. I am the youngest of five children to parents who are still in love after nearly 50 years, so it's not that life has disillusioned me about marriage, either. I live in Saint Paul, MN, and am finishing the last semester of a Bachelor's degree in English Literature. I took a hiatus of about a decade from the initial pursuit of this degree, and had a delayed teenage rebellion in my twenties, hence the advanced age without an advanced degree. Books and creative writing are my main passions in life, followed closely by film and music. I intend to become a teacher of some sort, to publish something someday, and to generally live, with integrity, the fullest life I can. I can't choose just one book as the greatest of all time, but I can declare with all the authority of my stubborn opinion that Led Zeppelin is the greatest rock band of all time. I like a lot of other music too, but I assume there's a thread for further conversation on that topic. I haven't traveled much, but hope to as life goes on. This spring, after I complete my degree, I will begin an 18-month program in massage therapy. It's just something I've always felt called to do. So be nice to me, because if we ever meet, you might get a freebie! The main way I've paid the bills since coming of age is through cooking. I've never been to culinary school, but providence has given me the opportunity to hone my skills through experience, and that experience has kept me employed. It's a portable job, like teaching and massage therapy (are you seeing a pattern?), and I love a good meal, to both provide one and eat one. Politically, I would describe myself as centrist. It would probably be more accurate to say that I tend to swing from pole to pole, depending on the issue. Suffice it to say that at different times in my life I have been both an Anarchist and an Evangelical Christian, and most things in between. I'm a seeker, I guess, and that leaves me firmly agnostic on most things, somewhat hopeful about the big questions, but jaded enough to participate in a conversation based on logic alone. I think I've gone on long enough. If you have any further questions, ask away. I've got a lot of dignity, but very little shame. Thanks for the welcome!

I've registered over on Kenny's board, but haven't been accepted yet, so you may or may not see me participating there. Looks like a great bunch! Two of my best friends are from St. Cloud originally! Did you go to school there? I know how it is to love the place you're from. I'd love to see the mountains, and maybe I'd end up swayed toward them, but in my opinion, Minnesota has an allure that I can't seem to shake. Most people I know who are originally from here and moved elsewhere, always return, or pine for it if they don't. I'm sure it's the same for mountain folks. Thanks again for the warm welcome!

Wow, that's an awesome introduction! You've got some interesting stuff going on and I look forward to reading your posts around here. Check out the GAMES board sometime. That's another place to share yourself.
HOWEVER... I must passionately disagree by giving you my own authoritatively stubborn opinion: CREED was the greatest rock band of all time, with Scott Stapp being the greatest rock voice of all time.
(Did I just hear you guffaw?)

That's another place to share yourself.Thank you for the compliments! I look forward to getting to know you and all the members here. You can be sure I'll check out "Games". I really ought not to, because I have been known to while away hours at a time playing them, when I should be writing. Have you ever played Bloons? HOWEVER... I must passionately disagree by giving you my own authoritatively stubborn opinion: CREED was the greatest rock band of all time, with Scott Stapp being the greatest rock voice of all time.
(Did I just hear you guffaw?) No, but that thud you heard was me falling straight backwards in my chair after suffering a minor stroke. But I shall zippeth my lippeth. To each her own. Ahem.

I've registered over on Kenny's board, but haven't been accepted yet, so you may or may not see me participating there. Looks like a great bunch! They are fabulous... Those girls are INSANE for Kenny.... well, mostly girls. No, I've been in West Virginia most of my life. My ex-husband was teaching a summer Latin class at St. John's U. when we were first married, so that's where we lived. I was too chicken to try to live through a winter up there, so we moved to TN. We lived there for 2 yrs, then a family crisis brought us back home to WV. Oh yeah... I dare say it's moreso. I'm quite proud of my heritage and my town... my ancestors have been in these hills for 10 generations (hold the inbred hillbilly jokes chem...). Driving here is so freakin fun... it's like a rollercoaster.... you have no idea.... It's really super to have you, Dk!!

They are fabulous... Those girls are INSANE for Kenny.... well, mostly girls. ! So I've read! Hee hee! I admire Kenny myself, and was frankly embarassed when I realized how attached I'd gotten to a fictional television character. No matter how much I remonstrated with myself, I couldn't stop crying for about 30 minutes after episode 0511. It was a complete and utter shock to me, since, as I've said, I managed to avoid all talk about the episode until I got the chance to watch it. Suffice it to say that I'll be looking for Kenny in what ever production he's part of--he won a fan for life. Ah, good ol' St. Johns. A lot of my friends from highschool ended up going there. It's a beautiful campus. Re: Winter in Minnesota, well, with global warming, it hasn't lived up to its lore in quite some time, and as a true Minnesotan, I'm sad about that. Oh yeah... I dare say it's moreso. I'm quite proud of my heritage and my town... my ancestors have been in these hills for 10 generations (hold the inbred hillbilly jokes chem...). Driving here is so freakin fun... it's like a rollercoaster.... you have no idea.... That's awesome! I'd like to visit there some day. I've camped in the foothills of the Ozarks, but that's as close as I've gotten. Driving Highway 61 on the way back, plus seeing a bolt of lightning strike just yards from our vehicle were just some of the things that made me realize I was closer to the sky than ever before! Or at least it felt that way. I love the music indigenous to that region, that's for sure. And hey, does this mean you have an accent? I collect accents and sayings. I love accents. I will worship you slightly if you have an accent. Just so you know. It's really super to have you, DF!! Thank you so much! It's great to have met you!

You're both wrong, btw. Jane's Addiction is by far the greatest, most talented, creative, sexy rock band EVER. Learn it. Love it. Live it. ;D Shant. But this only caused a slight headache. I love Jane's. Saw them live at the first ever Lallapalooza sometime in the early 90's. One of my favorite bands ever. And thanks to all those who chimed in with a welcome! I'm looking forward to spending time here. It has already been a treat!

I like a lot of other music too, but I assume there's a thread for further conversation on that topic. There is one in the This and That section. There were more, but they got up and walked away all of a sudden one day.

If you like Janes', then you're OK by me... I saw them live in Huntington, WV with Rollins Band about 1990... The first Lolla was in 91. I got to see the first 2 Lollas at Blossom Music Center in Cyua Hoga Falls. Heard of The Cramps by chance? My other favorite.... I don't hear my accent cuz everyone around me talks this way!! lol I got several comments from Chiklis on the set about my "southern" accent, but it's really more "urban appalachian" in my opinion. ha!

There were more, but they got up and walked away all of a sudden one day. Alright... I deserve to be admonished for that one, so let's get on with it.... I wiped out the entire This n That board.. all the threads... Gone. Over 300 of them... Completely deleted, never to return. Totally my fault and no way to pawn off the blame. I'm still really sorry about that, btw. It was a stupid mistake I made while trying to do something else.... ::sigh:: But look how quickly it's recovering!!!! ;D

Are you old enough to remember Wayne's World from Saturday Night Live, and how they expressed approval for one female or another by saying "shwing!" Well, I decided that since women have a similar anatomical reaction to things that make us hot, but on a smaller scale, "ping" would be a good equivalent descriptor! ;D You're a naughty girl, cuffs! Now I'm getting hip to what your screen name must mean! <drying tears of laughter> I will go and look at the Scott Stapp thread, and I may even agree at least in some shots that he's a sexy guy, but, darlin' he will never, never, never touch this: in my mind, ear, or panties. I'm sorry, honey. Don't hurt me.

Mean old levee taught me to weep and moan, Mean old levee taught me to weep and moan, Got what it takes to make a mountain man leave his home, Oh, well, oh, well, oh, well. Don't it make you feel bad When you're tryin' to find your way home, You don't know which way to go? If you're goin' down South They got no work to do, If you're going NORTH to Chicago. Cryin' won't help you, prayin' won't do you no good, Now, cryin' won't help you, prayin' won't do you no good, When the levee breaks, mama, you got to move. All last night sat on the levee and moaned, All last night sat on the levee and moaned, Thinkin' about my baby and my happy home. Going, going to Chicago.. Going to Chicago.. Sorry but I can't take you.. Going down.. going down now.. going down... YEAAAAAAAAAA BOOYYYEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! Ima gonna give a shout from my wonderland hill in OHIGHO to all the brothers and sisters in New Orleans who are still recovering and the peeps in OHIO who are suffering from flooding. And while I am at it I am gonna yell at the yahoos in Chicago because when I lived in the windy city it wasn't all that bad cuz I LOVE THE BLUES and badcop lives there!!! WHOOOO HOOOO!!!!!! Shine on crazy diamonds and never say never!!!! ;D (Gives darkflower a friendly smack on the ass for saying, "Don't hurt me". She is going to have to find out sooner or later that I like to spank everybody...all in fun. hee hee)
