June 5, 2007 "Spanish Practices" By Benito Martinez
Damn it. Just when I thought all the bones had been buried and no trace of past evils could be found... Why does Vic have to find it? Why does Pezuela have to be the one to give it over to him?!
The infamous photo.
In my mind, one of the most courageous storylines for a lead character in a series – ever, Hell, for any character, for that matter! My hat's off to the network and to the producers for having the trust and faith in me and the guts to see this thing through: the examination of the brutality, the humiliation, the helplessness and the rage of rape. And because it's the Shield, this rape victim is a man! The captain, no less! The one in charge!
As a fan of the show, I saw this coming back to haunt David. Of course! I mean, how perfect, right? But as the guy who has to play David, my thinking was more along the lines of "that'll never be back because I killed or had 'eliminated' everyone involved." Guess I was a little too optimistic.
And now that David is on the road to higher political offices, the urgency to eliminate any possible embarrassments is greater. How does David erase that board and not get his hands dirty? Does Vic help him or will David now have to eliminate Pezuela and Vic to finally get closure on all this? I leave that to the writers to figure out; hell, they've done a brilliant job so far.
So, now we're here: the last episode of this season about to air and our final season just about to start production. All the ghosts are coming back to haunt us. All our evil mistakes and dark deeds have waited in the shadows too long. So how do we deal with those things? Like you, I have to wait and see…

One of the reasons why Aceveda is my favourite character (besides Vic of course), and why I respect Benito so much as an actor is because of the rape storyline.
Like he says, it took a lot of bravery on the part of the writers and the network to allow the storyline to come into being, but its Benito himself who was on the front line. I think its great that, unlike Michael Jace who now refuses to act in scenes that acknowledge Julian's homosexuality, Benito not only has the courage to, but actually relishes being the central character in such a controversial storyline.

I also like seeing him call his character "David". I mean, it makes sense --he has the deepest and most personal relationship with his character, after all-- but it's interesting to see, anyway. Each of the characters gets called, for the most part, either by a first name only (Vic, Shane, Ronnie, Claudette, Danny, Antwon, Juan, Margos, etc.), a last name only (Aceveda, Billings, Gilroy, Hiatt, Kavanaugh etc.) or a one-word nickname (Lem, Dutch, Armadillo etc.). This applies both within the show and amongst the fans. And pretty much, the only people who don't call Aceveda by his last name are the ones calling him "Assinvader" or whatever. Nobody refers to him as "David". (Okay, except for the women he's had sex with, but duh.) Somehow, though, Benito Martinez has managed to work the idea of this character for himself so that they're on a first-name basis, as it were. Which is part of what makes the character so good, so complex and so interesting --much more so than if Benito went to work every day saying to himself, "I am now going to play Aceveda, the evil captain/councilman/mayor-to-be".
That said, I was a little disappointed that Benito's blog sounded as though it were written by a guy who was about to watch the finale for the first time, instead of a guy who had actually been involved in the making of it. When are these things actually published on the Web? Before or after the episode airs? I always read them after, but if they're published beforehand I could understand his coyness a little better. Oh well.

For all his complaining about the shortcuts Vic takes on the streets, Acevada doesnt seem to see the shortcuts he takes for political gains. And I'll say it again, I dont think anyone could do as great a job with this role as Benito. I was watching the season finale for season five again today, and it seems like in the last scene he looks like he is almost feeling sorry for Vic. But together, Vic and he make a great, if uneasy, team, at least in this instance.

eekay, I believe the blogs were written pretty recently; maybe a couple weeks before each specific ep aired. ?? FX posts them on the website after the show airs; usually that night or the next day.
