Cathy Cahlin Ryan blog for ”The New Guy"
I have just been watching news on and off since yesterday. It is the day after the Virginia Tech Massacre and as a mother of two I wonder, as all of us do, how this could have happened and could it have been prevented.
I bring this up as I'm supposed to write the weblog for episode number four of our show. A show that depicts life in all of its ugliness. Without glorification. And in all of it's beauty, truth and sorrow.
When I first opened up the script for this episode the first thing that I noticed was an almost two page monologue that Liz and Sarah wrote that I had to deliver to the strike team. Quite daunting. I was told that this was the longest speech ever on the show. I saw my role on this particular episode as almost lyrical. Relaying a dream, guiding detectives to a victim, figuring out the Vic retirement situation, and witnessing a rage in action by the person closest to Corrine. Clark Johnson let me do my thing with gentle guidance. I always enjoy when he directs because he is so talented and because he directed our very first episode. It's like old home week. I worked with Marciano and Jay some in this episode. I always feel really short around them. I had a hard time putting on the surgical glove in the scene. It was a size too small and I kept trying to preset it so that it would be smooth going on. Finally it worked but boy was it frustrating.
A really small problem compared to what people are going through right now. Our show airs tonight. As I often think of our jobs as court jesters perhaps some good can come of it. Perhaps an hour of distraction into the worlds of the people of The Shield will provide some escapism.
I am going to go hug my kids now...
