April 3, 2007 “On the Jones” Blog by Kurt Sutter fxnetwork.com/shows/originals/the_shield/weblog.phpIt’s odd discussing “On the Jones”, it feels like forever since we filmed that episode. And by “forever”, I mean it’s been a really long hiatus -- for fans as well as the writers. I’m finding that I need to reacquaint myself with the heroes and villains of Farmington (I’ll let you decide who fits those tags). I think the best part of this episode for me was watching Lt. John Kavanaugh (played by Academy Award™ winner, Forest Whitaker) cross the thin, dirty line. Our original conceit for this character was that he was a “different kind of IAD cop.” In his pursuit to bring down Mackey, he must become Vic Mackey (be the ball). In so doing, we stay true to the nature of the show -- that the potency of Vic Mackey poisons even the purest of wells. The greatest thing about Forest Whittaker, was giving him a crumb and knowing that on screen it would become the Last Supper. Guys like him and Chiklis make writers look brilliant (or at the very least, not like hacks). And yes, the cats were homage to the always-unpredictable Dutch Wagenbach. What will Dutch strangle this season? Stay tuned. Did I mention Forest Whitaker won the Academy Award™ for Best Actor? Okay, I need to sign off; I’m already four days behind writing the premier to season 7. Oh yeah. Miss you, Kenny. Thanks for taking one for the team. And by “taking one”, I mean letting us blow you to pieces. It was magical. Cheers.
