I believe, and I may be wrong, that when Kavanaugh said that he was going to be investigating Aceveda as well as the Strike Team Aceveda quit the police reserves...
I know what you're referring to, BBT, and I believe there was some talk of it, but just last week Aceveda was talking to Claudette about how the photographer was going to want to take some pics of Aceveda in his uniform seeing as how he is still a reservist. So I guess he either didn't turn in his badge, or he got it back after Kavanaugh lost his credibility with the Powers that Be.

I thought that he was talking about Claudette being in uniform, not himself, I didn't get it on DVR so I will have to watch it with closed captions tomorrow...

This was followed up with a scene where Aceveda drops his badge on Kavanaugh's desk, but Kavanaugh says something like "that won't be neccesary" - Aceveda is still a reservist, and I'm pretty sure he was talking about getting some shots of himself in uniform.

Yes, that is what happened. Kavanaugh didn't take his badge, he told him that it wasn't necessary. And so Aceveda is still a reserve police officer. I laughed at the scene where he brings in the photographer. That seemed like it was just a reason to have Aceveda in the episode. I hope they find a good storyline for him though. His character has been so big in the series that they can't just cut it out.

Could Aceveda simply be there to annoy Vic?

personally i think aceveda is and always been an important character in the shield.he was always there to make vic s life harder and make himself constantly so hateful to the viewers to the point he was hilariously baptized "assinvader' by someone in here. besides he represents whatever the series has to deal with the politics in police matters so his presence is never granted.i could not ever imagine him disappearing without a face to face with vic.and finally, about the compromising photo, that was one of the greatest moments in TS's memo and i want to believe that somehow it will get back in surface.

Actually the "Ass-invader" moniker was originally given to him by Vic, I think in Season 1 or 2. It was pretty early on, though.
Not to nit-pick --you made some good points. I just wanted to give credit where credit is due.
