Good idea on consolidating. I appreciate your posting of these, simply for curiosity's sake. How about putting a list of all the episodes in the first post for easy reference?

Updated the first post with the episode 8 ratings, which were absolutely horrid. Less than 1.5 million viewers... WTF?? Seriously, I think that if the show hadn't already been picked up for the final season it might be in danger of canellation. The numbers are even more depressing, considering that The Riches and Dirt (which are on the same network) are averaging over 3 million viewers. And since viewership has dropped about 25% since the premiere, its not becuase of bad promotion nor did 500000 people download the Canal+ eps. People have just stopped watching. WHY?

Why? Because FX did a piss poor job of advertising this show. I watch an ep of TS and see at least 5 commercials for Rescue Me. I watched Nip/Tuck as much as I could before the lobster baby story line and the old guy and his 18 year old wife story lines made me want to gag and saw perhaps one, maybe two commercials for TS this past year.

Damn, that's just depressing. Personally, I don't think all the blame can be placed on FX or advertising or anything else -- I think there's a solid percentage of past viewers who don't like the current season. My guess as to why is because the Strike Team is no more -- there's not the ass kicking badassery of the past. Right now, it's about getting deeper and deeper into the shit and lots of people don't care for that downward angle.
I love the path the show has gone but don't underestimate people's need for positive endings.

I watched Goodfellas on FX and saw no Shield ads. Only a little "pop up noise" and logo in the lower right corner reading "Tuesdays at 10." And even that only happened twice during the whole movie. Rescue Me & The Riches got all the push.

FX knows that they already have the solid die hard SHIELD fans bagged. That is one of the reasons that they stick a "Riches" episode in the middle of the two SHIELD episodes. I am sure that automatically gives that show a boost and they are attempting to grap SHIELD viewers for their new show, as well.
They never did that with any other show before...It was ALWAYS back to back-which I think sucks.
Notice all the publicity Rescue Me is getting. EVERY break practically. Don't get me wrong... that IS one show I feel is worth saving.

f*ck the ratings! They are going to show the last seasons so I don't care about how stupid people are for not watching it.

I love this show and I understand that it cant always be about the Strike Team shenanigans. It has to have an ending and that ending cant be a happy-go-lucky one. However, I complete agree that there is a percentage of people who viewed becuase is was always so much fun to watch the shit the Strike Team did and how they got away with it. Hopefully FX will push the 'final season' angle when promoting next season, so that people will be compelled to tune in again and see the end of Vic Mackey's story.

the June 1 Entertainment Weekly has a great article on the whole falling ratings thing - every major show is losing viewers and, as a percentage, shows like CSI, Heroes, Lost, The Sopranos, 24, and Desperate Housewives have lost about the same as The Shield (they have a nice table in the magazine) - the mag puts it down to DVRs, a long hiatus, the availability of shows on DVD and next-day downloads, and even Daylight Savings Time - I watch it on Tuesday nights because I can and I want to - but, I can see that if a viewer knows it's available the next day or so off of iTunes or they have a TiVo (like I do) then those are viable options - basically, the industry seems to believe that, overall, the number of viewers is the same as it's always been - it's just the viewing habits that have changed and since it's only actual, real-time viewers that are counted, it appears that viewership has dropped

I still think ratings are down because so many people have already seen the episodes via those leaked from other countries.....on you tube....and other downloads.... Very sad...

That alone wouldn't explain why the first episode was 1.2 million viewers lower than last season since the first episode aired first in the US.
I'm sure it's played its part, but not as the sole cause.

I agree.....but one of the biggest reasons I think the ratings weren't as high for the first episode is many didn't know when it was coming on....
I am of the opinion it is because the lack of commercials leading up to the first episode of season six. The had many commercials but no where near what they did in the past....

Damn! That's really sad . I don't care, TS is still the best show I've ever come across and that's covering 40 years! I suppose the die-harders like ourselves who have been watching each and every episode with baited breath for six seasons can't understand why EVERYONE isn't into it. I feel like there's a distinct advantage if you've watched it from the beginning, from Season 1 Episode 1. I must admit though I AM a recruiter!! I will talk about the show to anyone who's interested and I've loaned my DVD's (one season at a time) to friends who want to watch it. So far EVERY time they will bring it back and get the next season! I wear my Shield gear with pride, I think we have six shirts now. I have my Shield black hat. I also have my autographed pics of Michael Chiklis and Kenny Johnson framed and on the end table in my den, the Shield comic books, and my script of "Dominoes Falling" that was autographed by the entire cast. I keep that in a plastic case! I have my DVD's of Seasons 1-5 lined up in order on my revolving DVD stand on top of my stereo and damn near EVERYONE who walks in my den says, "You like The Shield, don't you?" "DUH!!!". So if other people don't recognize a stellar show with an awesome cast and great writing then that's their loss, isn't it?
