A few things almost blew me away in Tapa Boca this week. It mainly deals with the scene of Dutch and Corrine's chat in the street at Corrine's van. When Dutch asks, "Hey, what would someone use Prednisone for?" Corrine replies something to the effect of, "I don't know, a lot of things..."
Prednisone is a steroid. One of the things that Corrine answers with is Crohn's Disease. Oddly enough, I was very sick last semester/fall and nearly had to drop out of school. After being in and out of the hospital six times seeing five different doctors and many, many tests, I became diagnosed with a disease that knows no cause or cure; i.e. Crohn's Disease. Prednisone is a steroid that is most frequently used to help treat this disease. I nearly shat my pants when I learned that Claudette could possibly have been diagnosed with Crohn's Disease.
For those of you that don't know, Crohn's is a disease that affects the intestinal system of your body and makes it very inflammed. Whereas food passes through a typical intestinal tract with no pain, smoothly, etc., Crohn's basically puts up walls and blockades to make it much harder to pass food. It is extremely painful, making it difficult to eat without bowling over in agony, causes A LOT of blood when you go to the bathroom, and typically shows a dramatic loss of weight. There is no known cause and no known cure, however it can be treated and the pain lessened with drugs and medication.
I thought it was very, very interesting and ironic that one of my favorite characters - who cares if she doesn't actually have it - could possibly have the same diagnosis I have. Hopefully we will find out more. Even if this is not the case, wow, what a great twist, eh? One of the very BEST scenes that could be a clue to the notion that Claudette DOES have Crohn's is when she hunches over in pain and grabbed her stomach while in the lunchroom with Dutch. Hmmm...I'll be sure to be on the look out for more clues.
