One thing that hasnt been dicussed much is Ass. Chief Philip's visit to Vic.
So, it seems that the department is 'asking' Vic to retire in 4 months. I wonder how that is going to play out... Vic definately isnt the type to stay where he isnt wanted ('I'll walk out the front door myself before I let someone push me out the back'). So the way I see it, either (a) something is going to happen to turn this around for Vic or (b) this is indeed the last season and will last about 4 months calendar time, regardless of when it is aired.
Thoughts?

One thing that hasnt been dicussed much is Ass. Chief Philip's visit to Vic. Right, the forced retirement thing didn't cause much stir here... intriguing, now that I think about it. Well, maybe that particular scene (including Vic telling Shane about it) was too brief to stand out from the rest of a quite action-packed episode, and they didn't touch the matter again after the scenes with Vic/Philips and Vic/Shane... Interesting thought on the timeframe for S5, cletus... yeah, maybe the season will indeed last 4 months calendar time... on the other hand, *if* TS ends with Season 5 (and I'm sure it will), I can't think of Vic being "pushed out the back door" to be the conclusion of it all. I also can't think of a way for Vic to turn this around. He had his chance to prove he's on the straight and narrow in S4, when Rawling gave that chance to him. Philips himself told Vic in S4 that Vic's future in the PD depends on Rawling's success - well, we all know how that played out. Vic tried hard to keep his hands as clean as possible in S4 - it didn't pay off (Vic: "I'm fixing that!" - Philips: "You've been doing well lately - but you have a damaged jacket!"). And now, with the brass about to kick him off the force, *and* the IAD investigation that is very likely to cause a lot more bad PR for Vic and his boys (if it goes to court), I don't see a way to turn this around, not even for Vic. Even if IAD doesn't manage to nail Vic, and he once again covers his ass, I don't see much of a future for him in the PD. Vic dropped the Strike Team card on the guy they beat up, which didn't seem exactly wise... and the Strike Time as we knew it is no more,a fact that Vic is pretty aware of (remember when he told Shane they should get used to "bullshit uni calls" during the first few minutes of the episode?). Dropping the ST card on that guy, regardless of possible consequences, might point to Vic knowing that the chances of keeping his job are near zero, and he indeed wants to go out with a bang, through the front door, and take off the kid gloves.

Yeah, that's how I see it, too. I dont think that the ST card is meant to come back to haunt Vic and co., it was just a way of showing Vic's frame of mind and what's in store. Vic wanting could go out with a bang could play out many different ways. I just hope jail or death arent one of those ways.

Thanks for highlighting that, cletus. Vic wanting could go out with a bang could play out many different ways. I just hope jail or death arent one of those ways. Well, that's the Big Kahuna of Shield questions, right? I wish for some kind of real conclusion for all characters when the show wraps up, but what will happen to Vic is the most intriguing part. IMO, things in S5 will play out in a way making it impossible for Vic to just do the Department's bidding and retire. It just can't end that way. I suppose jail or death are more likely for him. Or, option #3, a "riding off into the sunset" ending, and Vic, as a fugitive, getting away with it all, maybe with his pockets lined with cash from a final dirty deed. I'm not sure, but it's possible that the early retirement thing will be sort of blown away by the inevitable shitstorm that awaits Vic and his boys, a story fragment that will just wither and die and turn out to just have served to set up Vic's frame of mind for this season. Ha, maybe I've watched S4 too often, which had a lot of arcs going nowhere, and this won't happen in S5. We'll see about that.

This is just a dream of mine, but an intriguing 4th possibility that came to mind could be Vic being forced into retirement, but his drive to clean up the streets is strong as ever so he sets up a little P.I. business or just plain goes out on some vigilante mayhem. This way he'd have a lot more freedom in ways of gaining intel, and would still have allies within the police department to watch his back. If he ever stumbles across a big fish that he wants to put away but needs to keep his name out of it, he can just pull the burlap sack routine he used on Kosodov in S4. The possibilities of that sort of storyline could easily fill a 13-ep 6th season and keep it fresh, but again it's nothing more than an interesting thought.
