I thought it was great. Some here have said it lacked some of the shocking scenes of earlier seasons. That may be true. But IMHO I think the tension brought about by the new Captain and the new villian (Antwon), not to mention the tension between Shane and the rest of the ST (especially Vic) made up for it. I also liked the new character "Army". Plus, I like to guage my favorite shows (which are few) against other shows, not just earlier seasons of themselves.
By the way, I asked Glen Mazzara that same question, in so many words, today. He hasn't answered yet. If he does, I'll post it in the "Inside Info" board.

yeah, i agree, Chem - it's still a great season - just a very different one - and when I watched all the episodes back-to-back it was way better than I remembered during the actual season so I'm really looking forward to the DVD set and the all the commentaries - it's just a whole different dynamic with major new characters who really step up to the plate in terms of acting chops - Close and Anderson and even Pena really brought out the best in Chiklis and Groggins et al - IMHO, the one character that really progressed (although in perhaps a negative way) was Aceveda - the rest of the characters sort of treaded water in terms of what transpired in S1-S3 and will just pick up where they left off in S5 but the Aceveda character is definately not the same person as he was at the end of S3 - be interesting to see what GM says - good question for him

Im about 1/2 way through it and although its different from the previous seasons, its definately worth it. It gives new and exciting insite into some of the regular characters.

some of u are sayin that its different and not as exciting, i guess i over-anitcipated this season then because i thought with the whole vic and shane battle, vic and aceveda and rawlings, and antwone that this season would maybe the best yet, comment back if u have anything to say, or to clear up any of my assumptions, thanks

Lacked some of the shocking scenes is not the same as not being exciting. Besides, I was just repeating what someone else said ... I didn't necessarily agree. There were some shocking scenes. I don't want to say what they were, but you can find out if you look around this site.
There was plenty of excitement and tension, including all of the adversaries you mentioned ... and more. I don't think you overanticipated the season.

Season 4 was really good, imho. Glenn Close was simply terrific and SHOULD HAVE WON the Emmy! lol
The tension between Shane and Vic comes to a head in a way you'll never expect. Heck, the tension between Shane and everyone is a great thing to watch!
Aceveda takes on his role as Councilman with his usual flair.... dang, gotta see some of the shit he's into in S4!
Anthony Anderson shocked me with his performance as Antwon; really.... he's a scary, evil, scary, harsh, scary, scary man. I think you'll love Season 4, and besides, even if you don't love it, you'll need to know the story!! ;D

I thought Season 4 started off really strong. Much stronger than Season 3 kicked off. In my opinion, Season 3 built up a little slow but the last few episodes just kicked ass. The Season 3 finale was tough! Season 4 did the opposite: started off tough but didn't finish as strongly as Season 3. I think Season 4 was better overall than Season 3, but the finale was probably the weakest of all the finales so far....
P.S. I wish that for the episode in Season 4 when the Strike Team officially reunites that they would have put the song "The Boys Are Back In Town" over the credits (at the end) instead of the regular theme.... I'm a dork.

i thought it was a good season, i didn't think it was the best, but it is still worth it, to buy, i mean, yea it might not have been the most shocking season, but it still has some kick ass episodes, granted, their are some things i didn't like about the season but overall it is a lot better than some of the crappy cop shows they put on network tv.

it was a very good season. it was well written but stylistically better than the others. it gave alot more insight into the minor characters that were just sort of there in the previous seasons. and(this is good for some, bad for others) its not nearly as well thought out and confusing as season three was.

I thought it was a pretty decent season. There were some things that weren't resolved that should have been (what the hell happened to Army?) and some have said that the way the finale ended was a bit lackluster compared to the previous three finales.
I only watched through the season once, and I thought it was good. I'll be rewatching it come December 27th, so I guess we'll see what I think then.

(what the hell happened to Army?) He was a sniveling twat, that's what happened to him! He couldn't hack it and after he refused the polygraph, he was rightfully left out of any further Srike Team action. Army deserted. End of story.

Murder? Suicide? What? I understand the Strike Team not trusting him after that, and they had good reason. But not showing him again, IMO, was a mistake. Even a slight bit of dialogue to explain away what happened to him would have been preferrable.

My assuption is that he was transferred out. Wasn't he still working for Vice anyway? Hmmm. Come to think of it, was Shane ever actually transferred back to the Barn?

OK; I misunderstood the Q. Sorry.... My assuption is that he was transferred out. Wasn't he still working for Vice anyway? Hmmm. Come to think of it, was Shane ever actually transferred back to the Barn? I always assumed that Army quit the Strike Team. I mean, Shane said that he and Army "come as a package" when Vic asked him to transfer back to the Barn, so I assume that's how it worked. In Army's last episode, Lem told him about getting out while he can, and then Vic told him he might as well "jump ship" after he didn't take the polygraph. It was never said explicitly, but that's what I think happened....

Come to think of it, was Shane ever actually transferred back to the Barn? Yeah, later on Shane and Army transferred back ot the Barn to work on the seizure program - originally, Vic brought them back to keep an eye on them because he knew they were working with/for Antwon. I also want to know what exactly is going on with the Strike Team. Not the guys who make up the Strike Team, but the INSTITUTION of the Strike Team, if that makes sense. In Season 3 they were disbanded. Eventually the four guys sorted out their problems and worked as part of the seizure program, but I don't believe the Strike Team was ever formally reinstated - and I don't think it would be, considering that at the end of Season 3 Aceveda told Vic that the chief wasn't going to disband any special teams, but he wasn't going to help them, either - so it doesn't make sense that almost a year later, he'd go ahead and O-K a reformation of the Strike Team. I want to see that explained in Season 5, myself...

He Oked it because Lem was originally from the strike team. Acevada said he wouldnt go out of his way to find someone new.

It was okay. Pretty much every scene from season 2 I can watch over and over again and I'm always incredibly transfixed, but the stuff in season 4 didn't really seem that important. I'll like it a little more once I get the dvd, but it still has too many problems.

Hell yes!!! I can't speak for anyone else, but I think every episode is fantastic because I am such a die hard fan. I can't pick and choose ~ "Well, this episode sucked and the one before rocked!". I love them all. I was a big Michael Chiklis fan before The Shield, so I was biased from the very beginning. Then when I got to watch Kenny Johnson and David Rees Snell, I was totally hooked on the show. Kenny Johnson won brownie points with me when he sent my daughter an autographed picture and made it out to her personally with a message to boot. Of course, Chik was the one who arranged it for me, so....but he's always been one of my favorite actors anyway. As for David Rees Snell, I just think he's great. I watch each and every season faithfully and get them all when they release them on DVD. I just bought Season 4 and didn't sleep at all the first night I got it because I couldn't stop watching. So yeah, it's gooood!
