Ok Kids, our admin has thrown down the gauntlet for us to figure out who the new captain *should* be, and I for one am definitely up to the challenge! My .02: - I DO NOT want Claudette in there. She is way, way, way too rigid and she would be patronizing and boring as Captain. Even the tiny bit of excitement that it would add by making Vic and the Strike Team have to be so much sneakier is completely overshadowed by the fact that she's so intractable. First thing she'd do is break them up - and without them, there's really no show. Ergo: No Claudette
- I don't think they'll bring in another female captain. It would be too difficult to follow up Glenn Close as Rawlings. There are lots of accomplished female actors out there but will they have the same instant chemistry with the cast - Unlikely. No woman captain
What I'd like to see: either a) some grizzled old guy who's just holding out til retirement (soon) and who doesn't give a damn about anything, lets the Strike Team run as they please... b) A captain who served in another metro area and who blew it, got sent to the Farm as some sort of punishment? or c) A total newbie, desk jockey, fresh off being a detective in some cushy low-crime division, sent to Farmington to "develop" - being groomed by the higher ups while being hazed by the Strike Team?
What do you guys think?

Fantastic post, Peach. Now you can see I don't have any dummies for co-admins! No, no Nannette ... wait...that was a musical. OK, no no Claudette! I'm with ya. I see enough of her spooky facial expressions for my liking, as it is. I also think your point of another female captain wouldn't work because it would be too hard to come close to Close (we couldn't let her go without at least ONE pun involving her name, could we?!) . So that leaves your a), b) or c). Given those choices (and I don't have anything better to offer at the moment), it's b) hands-UP for me! (inside joke w/ Peach). That would set up all kinds of beautiful moral ambiguity / conflict scenarios: he already blew it once, should he risk letting the strike team ruin his chance to get on the pedestal? OR should he try to capitalize on the ST's "efficiency" to help him get on the pedestal? etc. Peach, maybe you should send this "suggestion" to Adam.

I don't know guys, but my bet is still riding on another female captain. I still think someone like Tia Texana who played Sgt.Cruz on The Third Watch would be ideal. But I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Copperhead...you have such a hopeful heart! Me thinks you are dreaming again. I don't think there's any way we will see another female Cpt, esp after Rawling's comment about being the one of only two. I doubt the other one would set foot in Farmington. I know... how about RONNIE! (talk about dreaming!!) Can you imagine... our dear Ronnie *finally* has a meaty presence in each ep. Lines! Woo! Now who knows... after Peach's comment to Snell/Adam??

Tia Texana who played Sgt.Cruz on The Third Watch quote] I agree, Tia Texana is awesome and I'd love to see her join The Shield, but I don't think anyone like her will be the next captain. I wouldn’t want to be buddies w/ Cruz, much less work with her, but I loved watching her. She’d make an awesome addition to The Barn or to IAD. She’s gorgeous, so Dutch might try to hit on her…that would be funny to watch. Or Tia could play a crime lord, that would be different. Are there female crime lords? (crime ladies?) There’s a lot of people from Third Watch who’d fit right in just the way they were…I wonder what would be involved in buying the rights to do that? It might bring in more viewers. I'd vote for Yokas. Yeah, she got a little prissy sometimes but I really liked her. Imagine Sully as Julien’s new partner. Nah, that’s too easy. Imagine Boscorelli partnered with Julien!!! Or Bosco with Danny. Immediately followed by Bosco butting heads w/ Vic. Or same actors - different roles. Think of that sweet, charming guy who played Jimmy Doherty. If there were no physical evidence, who would believe it if he were accused of pedophilia? Or they do a warrant sweep, pull in the woman who played Kim Doherty, and her big crime is she's written a hundred dollars worth of bad checks at grocery stores to feed her kids...contrast the penalty she'll get with some white-collar criminal getting a wrist slap for imbezzling millions. I'm so full of ideas today, I should get off the internet and work on my novel.

Oops...I got distracted casting Third Watch alumni & forgot to give my speculations on the next captain.
Who will be the next Captain? I can’t recall how Claudette phrased it, but what she said. A person who won’t make headaches for the Powers That Be, a person who brings to mind phrases like status quo, don‘t make waves, apathetic, and brown-noser. Almost certainly a man, probably past middle age, a guy who‘s had a blemish-free but undistinguished career. Probably a black man because they’ve had Hispanic and Caucasian, so for the department to seem representative of Farmington they’re kinda due for it. Besides, some Farmington residents must be feeling like the department was more racist during Rawling’s tenure. Those naïve enough to believe Antwon’s Community Leader persona may think he was framed. That perception must be counteracted. Once again, Farmington is a powder keg and while Monica’s “flint and steel” leadership was powerful and effective, like flint and steel will do she made sparks fly. The show’s creators can hardly put in a captain who’s MORE intense than Monica, so I’m guessing they’ll make it someone who’s much less fiery than Aceveda. The main “captain & coworkers” dynamic will then be a new one, with cops trying to be effective under a commander who’s more worried about looking good for news cameras and keeping political cronies happy than he is concerned for the well-being of his cops or the residents of Farmington.
I applauded Dutch turning down the captain’s job. For one thing I believe he’d do badly, both because leadership isn’t his strong point and because the rest of the force would be uncooperative with him. But I also applauded because if Claudette was right, offering Dutch the job was a sugar-coated insult, like saying, “You’d make a wonderful yes-man!” Dutch is better than that. I want Dutch and Claudette right where they are, double-teaming crafty bad guys and unraveling twisted plots. I don't want Claudette for the new Captain either, for some of the same reasons as Dutch - she's got the potential to be a leader but has pissed off too many people to be effective and besides she's damned good in the field.

author=maggie1956 board=season4 thread=1117839277 post=1120003727] Interesting theory. It might happen but would still be a huge come down after Monica. More like they would eat him alive, IMO! I definitely can't see Claudette there. Vic might have to shoot her in the head. Now that might be an interesting end to the series.

Other series have done this in the past, but it's still rare. For the past few months, two soaps (All My Children & Days of Our Lives) have been sharing stories and characters. (Yes, I like some of the soaps... live with it!!) This has been an interesting and very successful endeavor. I think, however, the two series share producers.
While the legalities of such an arrangement might make it very difficult for The Shield and Third Watch to transfer a character from one to the other, it would be an excellent move on Ryan's part. Why not? The fans will demand something even more innovative in S05 than bringing a major big screen actress on board!
What about a someone with a handicap? Someone who was injured in the line of duty? Copperhead, is something like that even possible? I was thinking of someone like Eli Cartwright Goggins (the last name is a coincidence!) who is black and happens to be wheelchair bound due to a motorcycle accident some yrs ago.
As for just plain black actors, Danny Glover? He's been out of work for a while. Or Bernie Hamilton (played Cpt Dobey on Starsky & Hutch)...he's 77 now, so that's probably too old.

Hmmm...what black actors would we pick for the position of Captain on The Shield - interesting thought L.I.!!! I think (not that they could get him, I'd say its unlikely at best) that Denzel Washington would be delicious.... oops...GREAT in the role of Captain. We've seen him do "Bad Cop" in the movie 'Training Day' - for which he won the Best Actor Oscar - so we know he can do that side of it convincingly, so "Good Cop" (if that's the way the writers want it) shouldn't be any trouble. Plus there's always his hotness to fall back on, although given that sort of addition to the already smokin' hot bevy of boys on that show, I think that some of the female viewers might require some sort of medical intervention to stop all the drooling (I know *I* would...) I think he's the perfect age for the role too - early 50's... OK team - LI's got us rolling - who else would be good for Captain, if they were to choose a black actor? What do you guys think? I don't think we have to limit ourselves to guys- although they did give us the indication that Rawling was one of only two. I could see a black woman (other than Claudette) though...someone like Angela Bassett - if she weren't already playing a CIA Director on Alias ~Peach

I like the idea of another Goggins on the set... esp a main character in a wheelchair. Now that Dutchie isn't the Ladies Room monitor, he can be the new Capt's personal wheelchair attendant... for comic relief, of course!! And Denzel Washington...now that's some mighty fine chocolate, if you ask me!! Entirely too distracting... though I thought Glenn Close would be, too. Here's some other ideas! Billy Bob Thornton - he can pull off any role with total originality Halle Berry - I know a certain Admin who would go for that! (eh, Chem??) I had proposed Elizabeth Taylor at one time... talk about a radical move! She could play the Captain as someone like herself... totally horny, totally raunchy. If we go that route, Liza Minelli would work too! (ewww) How about Dennis Franz? He moves from series to series and is probably open to a new cop gig! He could play his NYPD Blue character or someone entirely new. Adrian Brody - another actor who can play anyone believably and casting him would be severely counter-intuitive! Jason Patrick - one word: "mmmm!" Maybe an Asian actor? Or maybe Shawn Ryan will get bold yet again and cast a total unknown... someone who has yet to be discovered and will knock our socks/jocks/rocks off!

I'd rather see Denzel join Farmington as a cop ... maybe even the ST, why not? I can see him as someone who has a shady past in dealings with gangs and can hold his own when it come to kicking their asses.
Black male actors I could see as Captain are Courtney B. Vance of Law and Order Criminal Intent, and Morgan Freeman.
Black female actors? Hmmm. Lorraine Toussaint, who portrayed Shambala Green, a defense attorney with a big-time attitude on Law and Order, would be perfect.
Heck, now if Peach wants Denzel for Captain, I'll take Halle Berry.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH just thought of a twist - what if they made BILLINGS the Captain? After all, they did offer it to Dutch, which means they're at least considering the idea of promoting someone from within the Barn. Dutch had the sense to say "No Thanks" - but would Billings do the same? Hmmmmmmmmmm.....interesting....very interesting....

Peach, I thought of Billings, too, when I was reading Maggie's profile of who she thought could be the new Captain: A person who won’t make headaches for the Powers That Be, a person who brings to mind phrases like status quo, don‘t make waves, apathetic, and brown-noser. Almost certainly a man, probably past middle age, a guy who‘s had a blemish-free but undistinguished career.
Does that sound like Billings, or what? Now, if Dutch can kick his ass, Billings could end up being a pinata (literally and figuratively) for Vic and the boys, heh.
You know, I was about to tell Adam Fierro that I would volunteer for the role (I already got the title) -- and I would come cheap -- but I don't want to do it if they're looking for someone like Maggie described (yeah, right. I'd let them mop the floors with me if that's what they wanted ;D).

In light of recent events in my home town, I'm offering our Roanoke City Police Chief, Joe Gaskins, for the role of Captain. You see, Chief Gaskins, who is African-American, was just served w/a warrant for Domestic Abuse on his "estranged" wife. His job is on the line right now. Where can he send his resume??

That would fit perfectly with my other pet theory for next season's captain. What if the new captain were someone so corrupt as to make the Strike Team look like Eagle Scouts? Sort of like the tension when they were trying to disentangle themselves from Gilroy, but from a different direction. Meanwhile, my sympathies to your Chief's ex-wife and everyone else involved. He must be such a joy to work for.

Actually Chief Gaskins has been a real plus for Roanoke. It's his ex-wife that is the problem this time. I think she has some "issues"........

Billings?! Holy crap - that will drive Dutch insane! If that does happen, Dutch and Claudette ought to bust his weasely arse for his chicken-poopiness at the car wash..... What a wimp! I'm still rooting for an old lazy fart who will let the Barn run amuck!
