Or was he just that lucky to break down the door at that exact moment?

He probably found out where Tomas lived since he had an arrest warrant.

Well I got the best answer I could from the DVD commentary - not on that actual episode, but on the next episode. Chiklis said it was just sort of an unanswered, enigmatic thing, and Karnes said the rest of the cast assumed that getting dirt on Julien would be the natural way for Vic to deal with a problem like that. Similar to finding the private school lady's stolen ring.

I guess it comes down to would you rather be lucky or rather be good???
I think Vic know how to make his own luck.

I have been watching Season 1, and I suspect that Danny told Vic about Tomas.
I don't think she was being vindictive toward Julian, but there are lots of "Officer Sofer. . ." "Detective Mackey. . ." moments between Danny and Vic, and in the scene where she confronts Vic about the stolen cocaine, Vic makes reference to "what happened the other night," so apparently Vic and Danny are still hot and heavy. She might have mentioned something without realizing what she was giving away.
I think Vic got just enough information from Danny to put all the other pieces together--he wouldn't have needed much, and she may have been the only person who knew about what was said between Julian and Tomas after Tomas's arrest.

I love season 1. I also think Sofer told Vic. That is the only explaination I can think of. But I didn't think She knew yet. Mmmmmmm. Looks like I am going to have to watch a few episodes over again on DVD.

I believe Vic simply made it his business to find out about Julian's business. He then ran across the Tomas thing , thus finding the leverage he needed against Julian. I, tell ya, Vic is Tha Man!

I think it is just one of those things with no answer. So the writers had him walk in on them so hed have an out for stealing the drugs. Its TV so the writers can take some liberties in progressing the story in a timely manner.

As a fan, I think this unknown element in the Vic/Julian/Tomas story is a wonderful little bit of plot to play with. There are others, but this one stands out to me...
It's as if the writers are actually giving us credit for being able to follow the story without having every little detail laid out for us. They're also giving us something to debate and ponder.... And for the longest time, I never questioned how Vic knew - it wasn't until I read the question online that I ever gave it a second thought!

I always wondered how Vic found out too. I didn't realize how many little snitches he has in the barn.

Seems to me it's one of those assumed things. Vic the badass knew how to take what information he had and use it to his advantage even though it's not shown directly on the show.

Seems to me it's one of those assumed things. Vic the badass knew how to take what information he had and use it to his advantage even though it's not shown directly on the show. And IMO, that always makes for interesting TV. Classic look on Julien's face when Vic tells Tomas that his boyfriend will lock up as he's leading Tomas out of the apartment.

They talked about it in one of the commentaries, that it was never written in and it was assumed by the writers that the viewers would be able to connect the dots and figure out that Mackey is a crafty fellow that somehow figured out Julian had a boyfriend...looking into Lowe to be able to get something on him to get him to drop the accusations, we have since seen Vic do some fancy background checks on people to get dirt on them. That's what he did.

David did it on the prostitute he went to see in S4. He called her on her home phone then acted all surprised that David was able to get the number. It's a good possiblity Vic had a snitch or something tell him that Julien and Tomas were dating. Then bust in with the element of surprise and blackmail the rest of the season.

I wasn't surprised at all. Through all the seasons, it seems as if there's a standard pattern that Vic goes through. First, he notices things without being able to file them in any particular place. Then, he gets curious, and does surface digging, paying closer attention to any and all things that could be connected to the floating information. Sometimes he seems to put a picture together with no other use for it than that it's something to know that might be useful someday. It's like I see these little tetris pieces suspended in his head, that he can click into place when they're needed. Otherwise, they may just float there indefinitely.
Notice, investigate, calculate, manipulate. He does it so well, in that order. And people always seem to tell him things without knowing they're telling him.

Or was he just that lucky to break down the door at that exact moment? I dont think that Vic knew about those two he was just serving a warrant he looked pretty shocked almost as much as Julian did.
