I'm still getting through the Season 3 dvd set. Seems like the best commentaries I've heard so far involve Jay Karnes (Dutch) and Benito Martinez (Assinvader). Walt Goggins (Shane) and Chiklis are a riot, but Chiklis does a more attentive job of discussing acting methods when Goggins isn't in the room.
One of the better commentaries, imho, has been one with Karnes, Martinez and Dean White--a new director to the series ("What Power is..." S03X10). White is thorough, talkative, funny and very open about his mistakes, what he learned from everyone, and how he felt about the process scene by scene.
Sigh...I thought, how wonderful to be in love with what you do. AND to learn from someone like Shawn Ryan!!

good stuff. i have to admit, last week when i was running through the 15 episodes of season 3 at a marathon pace so i'd be all caught up by tuesday night, i didn't have the patience to listen to a few bits of commentary and look at a few deleted scenes. i can see why theose scenes were deleted; most of them were just filler.
i have a much deeper respect for season 3 now that i can see it in order and with no commercials. i thought season 2 was better while i was watching season 3 last year, but now, i think the tie are pretty much tied for quality. i think season 2 flowed better from season 1 and INTO season 3, and from episode to episode...the "small" storylines were a bit more gripping too, but overall, i think season 3 lived up to its potential. i think season 4 will also leave me wanting more, again, until i can see it all on dvd. but i'd rather them focus on quality instead of doing more episodes each season; this way they get 6 months or so out of the year to continue fleshing out new ideas and keeping the ideas sharp.

i liked the commentary when they had all the Strike Team actors. It was the one where Chiklis directed or produced his first episode, the one with the lynching story line. They cracked me up!

Are the DVDs worth getting?

Oh yes. Yes, yes, yes!
The commentary alone is worth the price (check amazon.com). You can rent them through some Blockbuster stores and Netflix has them in thier library too....
They are worth owning.

Watch the "Breaking Episode #315" making-of documentary on the Season 3 set -- you'll gain more respect for these guys than ever before.

I want them all!!! But, I don't have them all yet. I want more shirts and a hat, too. Hey...I have an idea: How about we find out when the next Shield merchandise truck is headed out and we can plan our own interception. Just like the money train, but, HEY...it's a SHIELD FAN thing!!! Free shirts, DVD's, hats, the works. What do ya'll think?

I think you should not be discussing that on a publicly viewed message board.

Trouble is, Icy, none of us would be content to stash them in a storage locker... we'd be running through the streets, covered in Shield stuff, it'd be all over in our homes and spouses would notice. No, this is not at all like sitting on a few million dollars. We'd be in the slammer before nightfall.
Better to earn it the old fashioned and much more satisfying way... through a TSR contest!! (hint hint...hint...hinthinthint...hint...)

I'm a DVR horder, too!! I won't delete them until I've watched them all one last time, while comparing them to the DVDs. Sometimes scenes are different, or changed for the DVD release and I want to make sure I know what they've changed. Yeah, i take obsession to the next level.

I'd have to say, one of my favourite commentaries is from S1 ep 13 Circles. Where Michael Chiklis talks about the ending of the episode. He did it one take putting himself in a place that no parent wants to go. The fear, the loss, the hopelessness of not knowing where your family is, is devastating. (My sister went through this with her ex, when he took their children back to Israel without her permission.) Watching Michael Chiklis portray the very emotions that my sister and my family went through was very haunting, and I found myself crying for Vic and for Michael because to go to such a dark place is incredibly painful. It wouldn't surprise me when he was done filming that day, he went home hugged his kids and wife and probably thanked G-d that he still has everything in his life.

I keep telling myself that one of these days I will re-watch all my Shield DVDs ... with the commentaries. That would be a great way to recall what a phenomenal show it was.
I'll bet you're right about MC giving his family a hug after that particular ep.
