IL does not have ANY provision for concealed or open carry. Nor does WI to the north of us. The only 2 states that have no form of it. Makes you wonder why crime in Chicago is prevolent? ?

In WV, we can carry pistols in holsters without a permit. We can also carry concealed with a permit. I have no permit, nor a holster. I'm using Firefox at Rick's office and can't vote right now, though.
edit: Charleston (and possibly other cities) has a city ordinance banning the open carrying of a gun.

^When you say in a holster without a permit, you mean out in the open right? NOt concealed in a holster? Correct. We can carry pistols in holsters without a permit as long as the pistols are visible.

Not that I know of. You can do whatever you want on your own private property (and in Texas a "backyard" can still mean 3,000 acres). And I believe there is a provision for hunters to carry holstered visible sidearms while hunting (though obviously not in areas inhabited by people). But as far as carrying a visible holstered sidearm in urban areas - only cops, as far as I know. And we can't drive around with an open container of booze anymore, either. Even on a boat, the driver can't have an open container within reach.

In Texas, they must be concealed and you must have a permit. That is to carry a handgun on your person in certain places. Even CHL holders can't carry into any business that does at least 51% of their revenue from alcohol sales, schools, sporting events, some areas of hospitals and gvt. buildings. That being said, you can carry a handgun in your vehicle anywhere you wish, even without a license, as long as it is not in plain view. We also have what is called the "Castle Doctrine". In Lehman's terms, if someone is breaking into your residence, you can shoot first and ask questions later if you fear for your life and safety. Law Enforcement that are commissioned Officers or retired can carry concealed anywhere they choose....bars, stadiums, schools, whereever. I went to a Stars game and when they see you are properly identified, they find out your seat, which is completely understandable.

There was a new law a few years ago, granting current officers and Retired officers the right to carry in ANY state, concealed. It use to be more of a courtesy thing, meaning some states would not honor your badge. It had to be a real dick cop, but now it is written in law.

In adding to that, and correct me if I am wrong and/or missing something, Cops from outside the state are subject to the host state C/C laws and not necessarily able to carry concealed everywhere (i.e. bars, schools, sporting events)

I believe you are correct. Here in IL cops still are not allowed to carry off duty in bars, sporting events, ect. Even if you are an officer in IL. But in all actuality, as long as you are not doing anything really stupid, what cop will bust another cop for carrying anywhere?

But in all actuality, as long as you are not doing anything really stupid, what cop will bust another cop for carrying anywhere? BINGO!!!! Gawd, why can't this kind of common sense find its way to the city councils, state houses, and US Congress in this country!!! Anyone anywhere who is not doing anything stupid and not harming anyone else should be left alone to continue not being stupid and not hurting anyone. Your statement reminds me of those great new commercials out now (I know its a great commercial because I have no idea what they're advertising) in which the firefighters end up running the Congress for a day. The Fire Chief says "all those in favor of clean, safe water, say Aye!". Ayes in unison. He bangs gavel. Again "All those in favor of ... " repeat Ayes, bangs gavel. He then says "Wow this is easy"
