Not sure if this is right place to put this, but I figured the premiere of Sutter's new show deserves a thread of its own here somewhere. I DVR'd it last night and watched it today over lunch. Decent first episode. Nothing of the calibre of The Shield's best-ever-in-the-history-of-TV pilot, but held my interest. I figure I'll probably keep recording this for the season as a tag-along to The Shield (like how I used to always record Night Court after Cheers, even though it wasn't nearly as good a show). Anyway, there are some great Shield-ian references that Shield fans will enjoy seeing in SOA's pilot episode: - An early seen involves Ron Perlman's character, the leader of the biker gang, meeting with some ONE-NINERS about a gun deal in the same park setting where Aceveda and the Fed met Terry in The Shield pilot. Perlman's character mentions how they have always been good to the ONE-NINERS, supplying their weapons and never selling to the "Mexi-gangs". This has my brain trying to think back to the Shield Season 6 arc of "The Horde" biker gang that Ronnie helps Dutch & Billings bust. I may have to re-watch that episode.
- The main character is a younger biker named "Jax" short for "Jackson" whose deceased father helped found the gang with Perlman's character. At one point, Jackson finds a hidden yellow envelope containing his father's "true feelings" about the gang .... nice parallels to Shane's son Jackson on The Shield - almost like a future parallel universe where a grown Jackson finds the big confession envelope his dad left for him.
- Katie Segal's character has parts of her Shield character (widowed) and the Mara character (mother of Jackson and a cold-hard-redneck-bitch when needed)
- He's not in the pilot episode, but the "coming soon" scenes after the episode show Jay Karnes' introducing himself in some future episode as the ATF agent who comes to this small town looking for "guns and bad guys".
- There is a birth-defect story arc, reminding me of the autism storyline in The Shield.
- Also a storyline of a drug-addicted mother who may lose her young child a la Connie from Seasons 1-2.
If I've left anything out, and you've seen the SOA pilot, please feel free to add other Shield-ian references to his list.

Yes, and Kurt Sutter wrote 1x10 Dragonchasers in which Vic tells Corrine the story of Connie's son Brian being born 10 weeks premature with an emergency C-section--repeated here in Sons of Anarchy.
Also, Sutter seems to to have a thing about Thai guys. In 2x08 Scar Tissue a Thai guy is a killer--he wrote that episode... In 3x09 Slipknot, a Thai guy addicted to prescription drugs attacks Corrine. Here "Thai guys" are mentioned a few times. He wrote those Shield episodes.
And, Sutter also has a thing about car-dragging deaths, as evidenced by 1x12 Two Days of Blood, which he wrote, and 7x01 The Coefficient of Drag--it's brought up in the Sons of Anarchy pilot.
I was shocked that he used the ONE-NINERS.

I was pleasantly shocked to hear the ONE NINERS, too. I think that banger even looked like he had a XIX tatoo across the back of his neck.
Katey Sagal is wonderful in this show. What a great performance. Hubby gave her some serious material.

Yep, he had a XIX tattoo on the back of his neck. Amazing.
Sagal is awesome. She stole the show in my opinion.
The lead actor, though, I'm not sure how he's going to work out. I liked a lot of Sons of Anarchy but as others have mentioned elsewhere, he seemed kind of out-of-place and perhaps just a little naive. There's probably some method to that madness, though.
I'll check this show out again for sure. Mitch Pileggi, aka Skinner from The X-Files! Jay Karnes joining the series as an ATF agent...
And the actor who played Navarro Quinterro in The Shield--I think he was the leader of the Mayans...?
And that guy who played the corrupt partner of Gordon's in Batman Begins as one of the bikers. Haha.

Now that you mention this, I noticed in the stack of photos that Jax is looking through from his father's box of junk, there appeared to be a lot of photos that look like they're of soldiers in Vietnam circa late 1960s/early 70s. I wonder if perhaps Sutter's family has some Vietnam war history/tragedy?

I've also been watching Mad Men since it came on last year, and I didn't even recognize Maggie Siff (the Department Store Heiress) as the Doctor.
I also noticed Dayton Callie in the previews. He was the unforgettable Charlie Udder on Deadwood.

Re-watched SOA Pilot tonight while burning it to a DVD to send to my cousin in Iraq (along with TS ep. 7.01). Couple more points I noticed:
* Men/fathers having to do risky/illegal shit to earn money to support their families seems to be a central theme in both SOA and TS. Difference is, it may be the women in SOA who force the men to do the risky/illegal shit to support them (instead of TS, where the men believe they have to do it without being told by their women). I have a feeling when more is revealed about John Teller, we'll find out that he was unwilling to continue doing the illegal shit to support his family's lifestyle, and Katie Segal's character probably had him killed and "replaced" by Ron Perlman's character. Segal seems intent on pushing Jax as well. And Jax's pregnant ex-wife's crank addiction and his newborn son's medical problems will likely help force him to go deeper into the shit.
* Katey Segal has a SMOKIN' HOT BODY for a 54 year old. The scene where she is cleaning Jax's house at midnight, then kicks back and lights up a smoke, she is wearing tight jeans with a wife-beater T-shirt covered slightly by a flannel overshirt. DAMN! Mama is lookin' GOOD! She has aged well. She looks MUCH better now than she did in her Peggy Bundy days.

Ok, I figured this entire show out after watching the first ep. This is purely speculation, not fact, but I think that Jax will find out that Ron Pearlmans character actually killed his father, at the urgings of katey Segal. Because of his vision of the gang. That would explain why Ron is now with katey, and she is worried about Jax taking after his father. Just my .02 cents.
I love the 19ers angle, I like seeing familiar things in shows. Like how SR uses alot of the same actors in the "Unit" as in the shield. Another great show I cant wait to start up again.
Anyway, The first ep will get me to watch the 2nd, a decent show, but no where near shield caliber yet.

I liked it a lot. Great character development for a pilot ep. Really nice camerawork, clever writing, and an Elvis impersonator! I'm on a Kurt Sutter overdose right now, having watched 7:01 about 5 times this week AND the SOA pilot.... Yummm.
Mrs. Sutter was fabulous -- my favorite character by far. She stole the entire freakin show.

I hope Sutter has not telegraphed it this obviously, but it sure seems that way. I do get the feeling that Segal, being his wife and all, could end up getting the juiciest character from all this. She has already exhibited similar good/bad dichotomy that makes Vic Mackey, Shane Vendrell, and David Aceveda such awesome characters to watch.

Dammit, I forgot to watch the premiere! Anyone want to tell me the plot so far or have any ideas on how best to catch up? It might be the first drama series I've been interested in since The Shield totally spoiled me for anything else... yeah, I think I'm ready.

I found this on another forum. Im not sure if its true or not, but thought I would share and maybe ya'll can offer some more insight;
"FROM HOLLYWOOD REPORTER – Jay Karnes, who plays Dutch on the FX series The Shield, has been tapped for a recurring role on the network's new drama series The Sons of Anarchy. The show focuses on a notorious motorcycle club protecting its California hometown from drug dealers and local corporate developers. In a six-episode arc, Karnes will play ATF Agent Scott Kohn. The role reunites the actor with Shield writer/executive producer Kurt Sutter, who created the new series."
Totally freakin cool if this is true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
