From the FX website: "Vic takes drastic actions to track down Lem's killer, as Kavanaugh's investigation makes a shocking turn. Claudette is put under intense political scrutiny in the wake of the San Marcos murders. Danny receives some long-awaited good news as Tina is offered an unusual opportunity." From TVGuide.com: "A warrant for Vic's arrest for Lem's murder is issued as a result of Emolia's statement and evidence Kavanaugh uncovers in Vic's house. But that's not stopping Vic from his single-minded determination to get revenge on Guardo. “Every second he breathes and Lem doesn't is unacceptable,” Vic tells Shane and Ronnie. Meanwhile, the Barn is getting the blame for the San Marcos murders, and Danny receives some good news---or maybe not---when she visits the Barn with her baby." From SpoilerFix.com:"Episode 5.13 - Veritas Vos Liberabit**: Vic, Shane and Ronnie are talking to an old Salvadoran man who used to be the leader of a street gang. Kavanaugh turns up the heat on Vic again, which makes Vic take bigger risks to clear his name. Corrine is involved in this too. Tina shows some signs of progress on the street." "Baptism by Fire" was written by Scott Rosenbaum, and directed by Guy Ferland. **A year ago, Spoilerfix.com originally listed this episode as being titled "Veritas Vos Liberabit," which, in Latin, means "Truth Is Freedom," often interpreted as "the truth will set you free."======================================== Was this a good episode? Incredible episode. Vic clearly does not care what he has to do to get Guardo. That basement scene was incredibly intense. Great foreshadowing at the end with Kav telling Vic that it wasn't his time yet but eventually it will be.

I wasn't sure how much I liked this ep with the way Kav just gave it up. But that last scene with Kav in jail and Vic on the outside changed my mind. Kav saw that he was becoming another Vic and decided he didn't want it. I never saw that coming. What else is new?

Oh, and how 'bout the scene where Vic goes into the banger neighborhood? Were those guys scary, or what? Damn, Vic had some balls.

I know this is against the grain here, but this felt a little like a filler episode.

How about Shane's little faux "confession" to Ronnie? That was great.

1. Claudette breaking Kavanaugh was the greatest thing ever. EVER. I didn't see him confessing so soon!
2. Corrin redeeming herself (for busting Vic on the money) and pressing charges on Kavanaugh. That's what got Claudette's attention. That and Dutch telling her about Kav's lies. Great scene. "He came into my house under false pretense and sexually assaulted me!" That line was the nail in Kav's coffin.
3. How about next week's previews? "Don't do it. For me." "WHY NOT!?" Think Shane will break? The guilt has to be killing him if he doesn't want to see a scum like Guardo die. OR he's more afraid of them getting caught.... which is most likely. He's always been a pansy ass in crying about getting busted, yet always stayed dirty.
The part that sucks is that Vic is cleared...and he's about to bury himself deeper (again) with Guardo. We all know in the end Vic is gonna go down, I'm sure that's how the end comes... but is going to be for Terry's murder? Guardos? For shit we never knew?
I. Love. This. Show.

That scene in the banger basement reminded me of Season 1 when Vic pulled that banger away from his friends.
f**kin' stellar episode. A definite A from me. I already knew about Kavanaugh's downfall, but seeing it was alot better than reading about it.
Looks like Ronnie is going to see things through and stay by Vic's side; Shane, Shane, Shane; he's talking sense, but it's only out of guilt.

I loved that one. The only part that was sub par was the Corrine yelling. I don't what it was, I just didn't like it.
Does anyone else think alot of the people have changed?
Vic,Shane, and Dutch changing the most.
Vic has only one thing on his mind. Shane has become a huge bitch/pussy. And Dutch is the shit now.
Kav. must have bumped his head when rumbling with Vic. He went from really smart to very stupid. If he wasn't watching over Emolia like a hawk Dutch & Claudette may have taken longer to figure it out.

I gave this one a B. Kav's exit seemed too quick. Maybe in the larger scheme of all 21 episodes, it might not seem so abrupt? And in the safehouse, Shane said to Vic, "Can't you listen to anybody but yourself? Lem wouldn't listen about going to Mexico and he's dead because of it. Is that what you want?"
Ummmmm.... didn't Vic or Ronnie catch that? Shouldn't one of them have said "WTF, Shane?! When did you talk to Lem about Mexico and why did that kill him? What do you mean, and just WHAT DID YOU DO, YOU DUMBFUCK?"

First of all, Lem said at the club the night before that he was not going to Mexico, that he wasn't going to end up like Gilroy. Secondly, they now all knew that Lem had restruck his deal and thus wouldn't have gone to Mexico anyway. There's nothing for Vic or Ronnie to notice, even if Shane was slipping up.

If I remember correctly, didn't the authors write the season as 21 episodes and the people at FX were the ones who decided on the split seasons?

Very much liked this episode, though I again echo my earlier sentiment that Kav's departure felt a bit too quick, as did his about face. It would have been better stretched through three episodes in my book, but it was still intense and satisfying. Him coming to grips with his actions and trying to regain his sense of right and wrong was very compelling.
Also, I liked that Ronnie decided to back Vic by staying guard at the apartment, even though his mind said it was all a bad idea. I think it's telling they're showing Ronnie as loyal so early on.
More good work by Walton Goggins. Knowing the truth and fearing Vic might take the fall for his crime was very juicy. Trying out that "false" story on Ronnie shows how badly he wants to accept responsibility for what he did to Lem.
Nice to see Corrine finally show some strength and smack down Kav in front of everybody. She might know Vic's a bad guy but she knows he wouldn't have killed Lem, either.
Emolia is so weak. I liked her character when she first appeared in S4 because she seems so trapped and desperate, but now she's just weak and deceitful.
Another A in my book (though for some reason the poll won't show for me. When the page loads, it shows for a split second then disappears... very strange).

I can't see HOW people voted, but I can see WHO has voted, and you're not on the list. Internet Explorer works best with our polls. Firefox doesn't like the polls at all, right chem??

My post may not be in chronological order of how it went down on the show but I don't care.
The whole scene with Mackey going deep into the gang palace was one of the coolest things he's ever done. I knew as soon as he dropped the magazine from his 4506 and didn't clear the chamber that he had something up his sleeve. Still wowed by it though.
Claudette grew on me in the ep. Glad to see her do something that didn't seem to divide the barn. I noticed that the name plate on her desk still said "Det. Claudette Wyms". That was pretty genious in the subdlety (sp?) by the crew. Dutch is growing on me as well, even though I've always been a fan.
I remember what Lem had said in the bar the night before but still thought the remark Shane said about it winding up killing him odd. Vic won't find out next week because the hint given by the preview was too obvious. Walt's acting is nothing short of greatness. Some of his best stuff this week was the facial expressions he gave.
Glad to see Danny make Sgt. I say she takes it.
Kav giving in like that did seem a little flat. Glad he's gone though and that our hero got to sort of rub it in to him at the end. Great exchange. Kav did have some deep words for Vic. They may stick with him but aren't going to have the haunting effect he had hoped for.
This ep. just kicked ass I thought. Made last week's almost seem like a grade B for me. Of course it was our first Shield drink in way too long so that counted for something and was still good for an opener.

That barrio was s c a r y!!! Everything was perfectly menacing, the camera angles and music and the body language of the bangers...I got chills. Vic walking in there was at least as scary as walking thru Baghdad wearing a yarmulke and an Uncle Sam t-shirt. The barrio is a "gated community" - hah! I didn't catch the trick with the gun until Vic pointed his. Then I hooted, "One in the chamber!" so enthusiastically I scared my dog and two sleeping cats.
Nobody has mentioned my favorite shocker of the evening: Dutch asked Tina if she knew what Occam's Razor was...and she DID! Whoa, someone downloaded a brain into that bimbo. Perhaps Dutch has been tutoring her a lot and some of his intellect "rubbed off" on her?
Claudette and Dutch were stellar. Kavanaugh erred in trying to smoke-screen Dutch, and sealed his fate when he tried convincing Claudette that Dutch wasn't objective enough to work Lem's case. It was a stupid angle, and a symptom of how badly Kavanaugh has lost his grip on judging people.
I loved Corinne's smackdown, I thought it was one of her finer moments.
I was surprised that K folded so quickly, but it makes sense for him. While Claudette grilled Exfoliant (may she die a painful and humiliating death like the rabid rodent she is), K realized that his house of cards could not stand and the truth would be out very soon. He would consider it a matter of strength/honor/face to confess before that happened. It's a control freak thing. IMO that was his primary motivation more than the stuff he said to Vic at the end.
Next week things get really grim. Perhaps Glen, Shawn, & the gang will fulfill a wish of mine. They have often showed us a rational Vic using bad methods to get good results (ever since Epi 1); now show us the down side. Vic is past rational, and the fact is if you hit someone with a chain enough times they will probably confess to killing Lem even if they didn't do it. That's the flaw in torture that "24" will never have the guts to portray, and it's the kind of angsty error that The Shield could really use to twist our hearts and minds. 'Cuz Shield fans are total masochists. Or is that just me?
Shane looks so pitifully guilt-wracked, the only reason Vic and Ronnie don't see it is that they would never consider it possible for Shane to have killed Lem. Well, I'm up for the show making us feel Shane Pain so deeply that we almost don't hate him, but for the love of the gods please leave Mara out of it. He can cry his heart out while snuggling Jackson, but I'd be happy if Mara never gets another second of screen time.
I love this show. But the season is starting slow: two episodes, and I haven't cried yet. I'm sure they'll have me weeping buckets before long. I give this episode an A anyhow.
