Ok, this episode was just fantastic! My heart was pounding by the end of it. It was great to see Vic draw down on Cavanaugh but it was even better to see Vic change gears and make it seem as if everything is O.K. Beautiful work by Michael Chiklis. Becca is back and maybe she might be of some use after all. Hopefully she will be as dedicated to the strike teamas she is with gang bangers. My only regret about the episode is that we haven't found out about Claudette's ailment but hey gotta save something for the future huh? I absolutely LOVED the last line Danni gave Tina. Tina is an idiot and will get someone killed so it was good to see someone set her straight. Can't wait til next week. The previews looked very exciting. Grade A for this episode.

Although I really hate Julien coming down on Tina so hard, you have a point. Maybe she is making too many mistakes.
A.
I LOVED the segment at the end.
The baby story was good too, although a bit graphic.
I also liked the way Corrine "figured out" Kavanaugh in their meeting. It was a good way not to mention Vic. I saw some discussion that had me anxious about this episode. If she had let Kavanaugh know that Vic told her, Kavanaugh might know that Lem ratted the investigation out. Nice to see that that cool explanation that made sense.

It also looks like Kavanaugh is officially letting go of his adaptive manipulation tactics and simply becoming a mad-dog investigator. He's been discovered by everyone now, and he knows it so I guess we can expect to see his darker side very soon.

Wow. OK, this one gets an A+ !!! The Vic/Emolia scene at the end was simply incredible. I'm almost speechless (imagine that!).... Onahoua Rodriguez, who plays Emolia, was great. And Chik - holy shit, man. What can I say? The look on his face when he realized she tipped IAD about the heroine... just wow. Definitely the most memorable moment for me. OK - very old school Shield, IMO. Great guest actors AGAIN! Dutch and Claudette's case was sick - and that's a compliment. I loved Dutch with the cord. Ewwwww. And Danny's scene in the interrogation room.... jeeez that girl was one cold slice! What the heck will Billings do when Danny goes on maternity leave?! Oh, and Tina: Danny IS the Queen "B" at the Barn, little sister!! Stretch marks and all, so bow down and take her advice you little tart. The "B" is for Bitch, btw But what the heck was Corrine doing talking to Dutch?! Although I love that Dutch knows about the IAD investigation now. I think Becca Doyle (Vic's atty lady friend) is on some serious downers. No one is that boring. Emolia sure covered her mouth (tapa boca) for the last 6 months....

Episode was great. So many things happened. And as usual, it set up so many scenarios for future episodes. For instance, Claudette's health. What is it and how serious is it? Dutch and his newly gained knowledge of the IAD investigation.... Will Corrine mention the money in the bag in the kitchen? The whole Tina/Julien/Danny situation.... Lem and Shane's tension. What will Becca do when she finds out that Vic wasn't/isn't quite up-front with her? WOW!!
And next week looks to be bananas!

A plus here! I think VIc is nervous about this one. First time he has ever considered a lawyer. Corrine handled Kav well, then pulls a bone headed move by telling Dutch boy. God she is stupid sometimes. I was left wondering if Emolia will tell Kav as soon as vic leaves the room? ? The best was when Vic got out to talk to assinvader, he made it sound like they were working together. Making Kav doubt his relationship with assinvader, brilliant. I am most concerned about Dutch knowing there is an IAD investigation. His nosey ass will get involved for sure. BEST EPISODE IN A VERY LONG TIME, since season 3 possibly.

Oh yeah, I loved the Vic/Acevada conversation the way it sounded on tape. I keep forgetting things about episodes I haven't downloaded.
I thought there was some actual substance to that conversation at first, until I heard it on tape.

apparently unlike everyone else, i thought this was the weakest episode so far (except for the last few minutes but this is fast becoming a regular gimmick of the show now) - however, it's just another part of a much larger whole and as a season I think this is the best yet (so far, anyways)
now Dutch is hip to the IAD thing - I've always maintained that in the final reckoning it would be Dutch v Vic and i think that little scene puts that in motion - Kavanaugh is on a road to self-destruction and will undoubtedly implode at some point but I always remember the end of S2 with Dutch standing at the scene of the MT takedown, hands on his hips, trying to figure things out and I think the stage is slowly being set for him detecting his way to uncovering the ST misdeeds
we're starting to get a lot of red herrings about who will end up rolling over - the finger has been pointed in many faces so far but I think it's safe to say Lem will stay true to the ST - BUT that scene with Shane was awesome and I think that's the hint of what's to come - again. Vic reminds Shane to keep Mara quiet (and his aside to Ronnie was priceless) and Shane is starting to come off as a whiney little weasel (especially when taken in context with his actions in S4) - Corrine I think will back up Vic especially if she knows that's how her kids will get help and Emolia I think will end up working with Vic to screw Kavanaugh - I just love how that whole IAD investigation is getting out of control of everyone (Kavanaugh, the ST, Aceveda) and I really do think Mara will come into play in a big way
it was nice to see Billings take charge - I think that was a good turn of events by the writers
while I don't particularly like Laura Herring, I do like the character - will be really interesting to see where that goes - she's sort of coming across like a female Aceveda - it's all about her personal ambitions
again, though, i thought the secondary stories were weak - looks like we'll get some resolution on the Claudette story (I'm wondering though - if she is really sick and her role diminishes I wonder if that will push Dutch 'over the edge' so to speak and that launches him on his investigation into the ST as a way to compensate for Claudette's absence - as a way of getting even for how Claudette was 'wronged' by the system) - the Tina/Julien thing just doesn't work (and she has to know from Barn gossip that Julien is closeted so you'd think she'd lash out) but I did like Danny getting the chance in the interrogation room - maybe her and Dutch hook up later to go after Vic
as E said, we're getting back to old school Shield and while individually the eps are all pretty much solid B grades from me, I think this season is unwinding perfectly

ummm.. I'm in the minority.
C
this "saving the good scenes for last" pattern is getting real old real fast.
the "fight in the cage scene" and the Danny follow up could have happened in ANY episode at ANY time -- in S1 or S2, it would have tied into the whole episode, and had a better pay off.
could Aceveda be written ANY dumber? that fake "garbage" conversation would have thrown his Vic Radar into overdrive -- but yet when Kav questions him, he gets all puppy dog. This is NOT the same character we were shown in What Power Is.
yes, the Vic/CI scene was well acted... and yes Catherine Dent was great in her scene too... but we've got some major story stalling going on here...
half of this episode was worth it, and really worth it at that -- seeing Kav start to "click" on Corrine... very nice, but again it's a seed of things to come.
and why isn't Dutch Master Detective Wagenbaugh scrambling to find things out (he's got suspicions on Vic and Claudette now)...? Instead he's just reactive. (Don't tell me he goes home and takes it out on his kitties either!)
okay, there it is.
I refuse to lower the bar -- Lord, please give me a "Something Major Happens and Nothing Will Be The Same Again" real soon

Now THAT was an awesome episode! Especially the last few minutes, DAY-AM!
Chiklis' acting was amazing when he realized that Emolia had snitched 6 months ago! He deserves an Emmy for that scene alone!
I also think that Whitaker did a great acting job, at the end, when he came in and found Vic there. He was seriously beside himself, and he did it so perfectly! Aceveda's quote about looking Vic in the eyes, and having him lie to your face, and make you doubt yourself (don't remember it word for word) - that was IT.
A+!

It is funny...I really enjoyed the episode as I really like these tightly-wound cat and mouse type episodes, but I found myself wanting a bit more "action". I don't know why, as I am not usually the type to demand that The Shield be 100% testosterone pumped... weird.
At any rate, excellent episode with great acting. The last scene was really good and very tension-filled. Vic is so good at playing people off each other...it should be interesting how his meddling affects Kavenaugh's investigation.
I do want to say that I agree with those who are complaining a bit about "story stalling". I think that is true...the secondary story in this episode went down like a Law and Order SVU type wrap up.
However, I tend to look at The Shield more in terms of "seasons" and it is looking like we are going to be in for another really good one.

I wonder how Mara will hold up if and when Kav gets his hands on her?
It seems like it used to take forever (20 minutes or so) until the first commercial break but now fx is starting right away and even though last nights show was 65 minutes long, I think we got an extra 5 minutes in commercials.
Another question, why hasn't Kav figured out he should be bugging the clubhouse, any investigator worth anything would have had the room and all their vehicles bugged in addition to having the wire on Lem.

I kind of thought the Strike Team was being a little obvious with having Lem go take a shit or any time Vic, Shane or Ronnie leaves the cluibhouse, the other two are like "Oh I'll come with you!" Like chicks out to dinner.
Dutch dropping that umbilical cord was great. Reminded me of an early episode when he realized he was holding a jar full of semen.
The end was classic Mackey - telling some skel/hoodrat to get their story straight half a second before someone busts don the door.
That has to be bullshit that Corrine can't even TELL Vic he's being investigated. Whatthefuckever.
"Ronnie, tell whatever you're banging this week not to talk to strangers."

Favorite line of the night was when ST was on scene with body face down on sidewalk with hairpiece falling off:
Shane: "Nice piece" Vic: "Let this be a cautionary tale"
The look Shane gave to that was hilarious!

I liked when Shane said, " It's your birthday? Man we should get wasted!" While they were going to question that one guy.

apparently unlike everyone else, i thought this was the weakest episode so far Well, this isn't business as ususal, as jwc and I have the same take on an episode most of the time. We disagree at last. I just watched it, and I said to myself "This was the best episode since 3x15 On Tilt, the S3 finale. I agree, it was "old school Shield", but hell, that's what I've been waiting for all the way through Season 4! Tapa Boca had about everything I want to see in a Shield ep - a pretty fast pace, shock value, intensity, and great acting, even though the side stories weren't all that great. Dutch and Claudette's case had that Law and Order wrap up, yeah, I agree, but nonetheless, I was on the edge of my seat for the first time since the end of 4x08 Cut Throat, when Shane came to Vic for help with getting out from under Antwon. It's been a while since we last saw the truly dark side of Vic. I expected him to lose it once he finds out Emolia betrayed him, but when he put that knife to her throat... it was about time we saw that side of Vic again. Chiklis was brilliant in the final segment, but hats off to Onahoua Rodriguez, too. I knew Vic wouldn't walk out of the safehouse without bumping into Kavanaugh, but just as I expected the episode to end with an un-Shieldian standard cliffhanger (Kavanaugh asking "What are you doing here" and cut to end credits), Vic puts his talent to talk himself out of an impossible situation on display. I loved that. But it wasn't just the final segment that made me rate this episode A (first A from me this season). S5 is doing a lot better in building up tension than S4. I loved the scenes that made me feel the old grudge between Lem and Shane slowly rise again. Shane is afraid of being taken down along with Vic, friendship or not. The "Team is one thing, family's another" line from 5x03 is still ringing in my head. And I'm not as sure as jwc about Lem's loyalty to the team. There's something brewing, people, and I don't think this will end well for our boys... I guess I'm in the minority, but I thought Corinne turning to Dutch "for a second opinion" (aside from Vic's) on the whole IAD thing to be a great move. Maybe this will come back to bite her in the ass, because it's clear to me that she doesn't want Vic to be taken down - for the sake of their kids - but she isn't really aware just what kind of cop Dutch is, and how much he'd like to take down Vic. This could create some serious drama in the future, I guess. Just like jwc (ha, we agree on *that* part), I could never get that scene from the S2 finale out of my head, Dutch at the money train crime scene, and since then, I'm expecting Dutch to play a major role in the (possible) takedown of the ST. Being on the DA's shitlist along with Claudette was what kept him from digging deeper in S3 and most of S4. Okay, up till now, he hasn't been too proactive this season, but I certainly see a change on the horizon. I guess once he finds out the truth about Claudette's condition, this will provoke some kind of reaction. Danny's lines in her final conversation with Tina were great. But I surely hope we'll be getting somewhere with Julien this season, aside from him complaining about Tina. All his S4 storylines went nowhere (esp. going to Aceveda about the seizures), so I hope the writers got something more in store for him this time. Billings is finally taking *some* action... in the 5x01 ep discussion, I expressed my concerns that Billings' inability to command might come across too cartoonish in the course of the season... so it's good to see Billings isn't necessarily a *complete* windbag. He'll never make a great Captain, but he seems to be learning... well, at least a little. I liked that. Yeah, Aceveda was acting quite dumb in this episode... and yeah, I would expect an experienced IAD bloodhound to put bugs in the ST's cars and in the clubhouse... and hell yeah, the "I gotta take a dump" thing wasn't too convincing (but I laughed pretty hard on "Third time I gotta shit today" - "Don't forget to inform us of number four")... but with the way things are heating up, with the IAD investigation about to spin out of control on all levels, and Kavanaugh now forced to let go off the whole "Evil Columbo" thing and play hard from now on, I don't think that these logical flaws will matter all that much in the upcoming episodes. Like I said, for me, Tapa Boca was an A - it made me feel the way I want to feel when watching a Shield episode. Old school isn't always a crime. A great season so far, *way* better than S4, and there's always room for an A+ episode. ;D God how I love this show.
