What rip off, breaking up the season and calling one only 11 eps and making us wait a full year for the second half of season 5!!!!!!! This sucks!!!!
Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 4:39 PM HBO, FX Outline Their Early 2006 Plans By Brian Ford Sullivan
LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- In a bold scheduling move, HBO confirmed yesterday it plans to go 14 weeks without first-run programming on its signature Sunday lineup.
That's the time between December 4's fifth season finale of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and the long-awaited sixth season launch of "The Sopranos" on March 12.
The pay channel had previously planned to launch its new drama "Big Love" - about a polygamist played by Bill Paxton and his three wives (Jeanne Tripplehorn, Chloe Sevigny and Ginnifer Goodwin) - in January but will instead hold the series until June.
It's understood the decision was to avoid disruptions by such events as Super Bowl XL (February 5), the 2006 Winter Olympics (February 10-26) and the Academy Awards (March 5).
Joining "The Sopranos" in March is expected to be season three of "Deadwood" with "Entourage's" third season bowing in June along with the aforementioned "Big Love" and "Lucky Louie," the network's first multi-camera sitcom.
In September, look for season four of "The Wire" while 2007 will see part two of "The Sopranos's" sixth season and season two of "Rome." A second season of "Extras" is also due sometime in late 2006/early 2007, depending upon when its BBC run concludes.
Meanwhile, FX has firmed up some of its plans for 2006.
Leading off things in January will be the fifth season premiere of "The Shield." The series is expected to run for 11 episodes, after which it will take a break until either the fall or next January (depending upon how season three of "Rescue Me" and presumably the fourth season of "Nip/Tuck" are scheduled) when the latter half of its 21-episode season will air.
Also in the mix next year are the second seasons of "30 Days" and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" as well as the Andre Braugher-led crime drama "Thief" and an untitled reality newcomer from "30 Days" producer R.J. Cutler and actor/rapper/producer Ice Cube.

I think this is Cheap calling all 21 eps season 5! If we have to wait till January to finish it, it is more like season 6. Just getting us 2 much shorter seasons.

I'm not that bothered by this news really. The fact remains that we have a 21 episode season - that means a more sprawling, epic story than we've had before. Of course, this is providing that the writers treat it as one long story (as they almost definitely will) rather than two short ones.
Plus there's the fact that C5 in the UK will probably run the whole season rather than in two chunks.

How can you consider it a 21 eps season if it is cut in half and shown almost a year apart??? Sounds like two shorter seasons to me.

Yes, I acknowledge that, but it will still be a single story spread across 21 episodes. It won't be like watching Season 1 then Season 2, it will be like watching half of Season 5, then another half of Season 5.

That remains to be seen, they have linked stories between seasons before. Like the money train. I don't see how it will be any different. I think after the first 11 there will some sort of cliff hanger, which will be answered in the second half.

I'd be worried they will complete filming way before the second half appears - and while I'm a huge spoiler fan I'm not sure I'd want to know what happens nine months in advance - FX knows the show is (for FX anyways) a good ratings pull and I imagine they are going to use the second half to piggy-back some new show
(I'm a huge Bill Paxton fan - his show sounds interesting - wonder if it's a comedy or a drama)

I'm not upset or even surprised. I figured this would happen, even Glen Mazzara himself said that this would probably happen. Who knows hopefully Nip/Tuck and Rescue Me will go by quickly.

Call me greedy, but I want ALL of my episodes at once. This is like getting foreplay and being stopped short of an orgasm!! AND I hate being left sexually frustrated if ya'll know what I mean!

I am ok with a break in the eps for the last season (does that mean we actually *do* get a SIXTH season??)... but only if we get the second half in the fall next year. Making us wait until Jan 2007 is cruel and unacceptable. Chem, please tell Glen our feelings on this!!
And I HATE (as in HATE) spoilers. I just know if we have to wait until Jan '07 that major spoilers will pop up everywhere...and I am gonna HATE that! CC edited to reduce font size, babe.

I've been waiting for someone to do something with that guy ever since Homicide ended the Thief show has been in the works at FX for a couple years now - they had a pilot done but I guess there were some major problems (especially with the Linda Hamilton character) and they've been fine-tuning it ever since - plus, it was supposed to be set in New Orleans so who knows about that now - it's been listed as an episodic show, then a miniseries, then a movie, and now it's back to a show - I like everybody in the cast so I really do hope it sees the light of day but all these delays doesn't bode well for its future - it would seem obvious it would make a nice partner with The Shield

I'll be anxious over the break, but it's kind of like getting season 5 and 6 so it's all good!

I'm not that uncomfortable with this idea. After all, I've become accustomed to 13 episode seasons of this show.
Perhaps this is good news. Maybe this means that Ryan has decided to stick with it a little longer and perhaps spread this season into two seperate seasons.
I don't think it's that bad.

The thing I don't get about this is...I mean, if they're going to have that big of a gap, why not add a few more episodes (what, five?) and make what we're getting now Season 5 and what we'll be getting in January Season 6?
But make no mistake...this is not another season, this is part of Season 5. If we get a Season 6, it'll be 13 (or 21?) more episodes in addition to these 21.
See, here's what I bet is going to happen...
They air the first eleven episodes. Then, sometime during the break, they release a DVD set containing those eleven episodes, called "Season 5 Volume 1" or something like that. We'll all buy it, because we're losers and we're gonna want the episodes ASAP. It'll probably come out right before the second half of the season airs, to maximize sales and ratings for the 5x12.
Then they'll release "Season 5 Volume 2," and we'll buy that. Months later, they'll release one big Season 5 set, and we'll all buy THAT so we have the season in one volume.
Big fat money making scheme.
