Not really a big deal, but it's something that I'm curious about, and I'd appreciate other opinions. I always liked Tavon, and throughout the fourth, fifth, and sixth seasons I was hoping that they'd bring him back. So, right before this final act started, I found out that he would be back, and I was pretty psyched about it. However... his appearance in the episode 'Dog Days' wasn't very big, and I can't understand why he was brought back at all, if that was all the writers intended. The only thing I can think of is that it provided closure on what happened with Shane; tying up loose ends. Any thoughts?

I suppose from watching the ending, Tavon coming back was just another thing for Shane to feel guilty about and bring about his own demise.
But TBH I think they wanted to bring him back for the fans. I think a lot of people were disappointed that Tavon was not used again and people liked him so I guess they wanted to please people. I was happy they didn't forget about him even though that episode wasn't the greatest.

I thought it wrapped up the Tavon storyline nicely. It showed that he came away from it rather healthy and safe and with a job he liked.. but also to tell Shane that he knew it was all a lie and that he was nothing more than a coward, having his friends cover his backs. It kinda led into them all falling apart which was rather ironic that without his friends, Shane would self-destruct. Which he did.

Thanks, guys. I appreciate both of your views. After that episode aired, and I started to wonder why Tavon didn't play a bigger role, I let my mind race. The next episode, where the shooting went down at the drug deal Shane was at, I had though Tavon was one of the shooters, originally; thinking that maybe Vic and Ronnie would use him to try to take Shane out. And, after I realized that I was wrong, I figured that Tavon would probably be back for the finale. I was almost sure that he'd play a part in whatever happened with Shane. And I was wrong again. But, thinking more about it, and reading your answers, I'm thinking that the answer to my question was probably so simple that I didn't even consider it: Tavon wasn't a bigger part, because he really didn't need to be. Exactly like you had said, Nick... all that was needed was to wrap up the Tavon story, and DD did that by bringing him back briefly.

tavon rocked.......
the final line between him and shane is everything......" now I know who you really are.....and so do you..."
that marked Shane .... and soon after he says to Vic and Ron "I don't know that we'll ever be able to put all the shit behind us"
and makes Vic thinks about the old Shane....the LOYAL PARTNER....and moments after..CORRINE confirmed it ...with the line..." WE BOTH KNOW WHO YOU ARE...SO PLEASE DON'T DO IT.."
you must KNOW already that every little tiny situation presented on the shield....is for something greater.......some emotion...some line...some situation......or just to laugh our asses off..........yea....that's the ABSOLUTE beauty of
THE SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHIELD!!!! YEEA!!
ROCK!

I dug the episode. In light of all of Shane's past bullshit, and I don't mean to call Lem's death bullshit, it humanized him a bit more because of the case. For that reason, I really enjoyed it.

I completely agree. The case was an excellent juxtaposition--Tavon on one side representing Shane's mistakes, and the girl on the other who represented what he had done right as a cop.
Shane accepts who he has become in Season 6, and faces his demons from then to the end of the series. He's not able to go on knowing what he's done.
It's important for us to see the contrast so we could understand Shane's complexity.
